National Drug Education Program

“Symposium on Drug Awareness”
March 8, 2018
LNHS Covered Court

Drugs had been considered as one of the grassroots of major social

problems. To show support to government’s war on drugs and criminality, the
Department of Education has also its fair share with its National Drug Education
Program (NDEP). For this school year 2017-2018, Lingig National High School
organized a Symposium on Drug Awareness to Grade 9 to Grade 12 students
respectively last March 8, 2018 held at the school covered court.

The activity started with an opening program whereupon the welcome

address was given by the school head, Dr. Lourdes O. Orcullo, Principal III. Guest
speakers from Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency were invited to share their
insights and expertise. Agent Bennie C. Toledo presented the legal matters
concerning illegal drugs and youth’s engagement to it. He also highlighted that there
is no fine for any individual caught using and selling drugs. He pointed out the
present situation in the Caraga region that all detention facilities are crowded and
80% – 90% of the detainees are involved with dangerous drugs.

Agent Paul S. Estalani, the second speaker, enlightened the audience with
the adverse effects of drug addiction to one’s health pointing that not only through
drugs would one destroy oneself but also through addiction towards alcohol and
smoking. The damage will take its toll on the person physically and mentally, and
breaking off from the addiction will most likely bring withdrawal symptoms and if not
treated will result to mental disorders, he added. He emphasized that there is no
cure for drug addiction saying that one can stop but can still experience its aftermath
from time to time.

Open Forum followed the Symposium Proper to give students and even
teachers chance to clarify some issues and queries pertinent to drugs.

The whole program which culminated with an awarding of certificate was

facilitated by the Supreme Student Government (SSG) in coordination with the
NDEP Coordinator, Mr. Tristan A. Villar who also gave his closing remarks to end the
activity successfully.
