UTILIZATION OF ASSESSMENT OF DATA

In this chapter, I learned that statistics plays an important role as a tool in utilizing the data

since it describes, analyze, and interpret the performance of the students in the assessment procedure.

Since assessment is a key component of learning, assessment able the student to identify and see how they

are doing in the class through statistical data. Statistics helps the students and the teachers to see to it on

how well they improved in their class performance and the teacher can specify what field did the student

did not do well. It is very useful in education because it will be very easy to determine the improvement of

teaching-learning process. Though there are different statistical approaches, its significance to education

is very relevant especially when collecting data for the improvement of students academic performance.

II. PERFORMANCE-BASED TASKS

In this kind of assessment, the teacher is not using the tradition way like pencil-test assessment, but

rather, the teacher is using the performance of the learners for him/her to evaluate how much the

students learn by performing a task. In this method of assessment, the learners are more on doing the task

rather than just sitting in their chair listening to every teacher discusses. This method enhances the

ability of the students to be creative and talented and can cope up with time pressure in performing the

task.

III. ASSESSING AFFECTIVE LEARNING OUTCOMES

It focuses on the affective traits and its learning outcomes. Few of the examples of affective trait that

is relevant is the attitude, opinions, self-esteem and the social relationship of the learners. It affects the

learning outcomes most especially when the learner’s affective domain was nourished. When it comes to

assessing, teacher should consider the emotions and feelings of the learners. Because every students
attitudes is unique enough for the teacher to not rely on a single assessment, instead, using many

approaches of assessments can help the teacher to find the best result.

IV. PORTFOLIO ASSESSMENT

Just like performance-based assessment, portfolio can be a substitute to a classic classroom test.

When I was still in elementary, my teacher used to tell us to make a compilation of all summative test,

activities in a portfolio since she has to see our creativity and our performance to evaluate our ability in

performing the task. It is very useful in education since it can demonstrate the creativity and the

willingness of the student to pass their portfolios.

V. GRADING & REPORTING SYSTEM

In grading system, the teacher used to give grades to the students at the end of the quarter or even

after the long evaluation for the students to know their weakness and strength in their class. In this

assessment, the teacher is obliged to give and practice the ethics of giving fair grades to those who

deserves it. It can always reflect the performance of the students by giving the grades and report it to

their parents. For the parents have always the right to know the performance of their children through

looking at the report of the teacher through report cards.

VI. ASSESSMENT OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

It’s never easy to assess children with special needs. But with the right amount of knowledge on

how to assess learners with special needs, it is very important to consider what special needs they

mostly needed. It depends if the student is visually-impaired or even deaf. The assessment should be

individual since special students have their own unique cases of needs. If the individual assessment is

obtained successfully, the teacher can proceed to assessing them in group but with the help of his/her

guidelines.
