thicknesses from 0.059” to 0.500” and widths from 29” to 63.750”. Specific grade sizes
can be referenced in size tables 1 through 5 of this section.

The surface finishes of hot rolled coils are semi-smooth and may have oxidation.
Hot rolled coils are used for structural applications or where the surface quality is not
critical. The typical applications of AHMSA steel coils include heavy machinery wear
parts, crossties, pipes, and tubes.

When the application requires a quality surface finish or painting, such as in the
automotive industry, pickling or another cleaning process should be performed by the
customer, or the customer should consider purchasing AHMSA’s pickled steel coils.

STEEL FOR MOTOR LAMINATION AND BALLAST, SEMI-PROCESSED
(NON-ORIENTED GRAIN)
The magnetic field cores of electrical equipment consist of pilings of steel sheets
stamped to size and shape necessaries form a core. For maximum electrical efficiency,
cores must be made of material having good magnetic properties, in particular, high
permeability and low core loss.

Permeability: Is the relative ease in which material becomes magnetized. For steels
produced in AHMSA, guarantee is of 2,000 Gauss/Oersted minimum.

Core losses: Is the quantity of electric energy dissipated as heat when steel is magne-
tized by alternated current. Its units are watt/lb or watt/kg.

Semi processed (non-oriented grain) electrical steels: This material does not have fully
developed magnetic characteristics, it requires of an annealing process done by the

costumer, usually after the stamping to develop the desired magnetic properties. This
steel can be supplied in a range of physical and mechanical characteristics and can be
matched to specific customer stamping and annealing practices.

TIN PLATE

Tin Plate is a low-carbon (base metal) where the tin is applied on both sides of the metal
by electrolytic tinning. Since the tin firmly adheres to the base metal, the product may
be press molded, stamped, drawn or bent and shaped or into complex forms without the
tin coating peeling off.

This product fully complies with ASTM A-623 and A-624 specifications and is supplied
in coils of up to 12 metric tons:

GLOSSARY

It would take a whole book to define all the terms used in connection with the
manufacture, sale, and use of steel products. However, the following definitions
are limited to the more common terms which can be useful for our customers and
sales people alike. We recommend that you consult a book titled, “The Making,
Shaping, and Treating of Steel” if you are interested in collecting more technical
knowledge beyond what we have defined.

AGING
Changes in physical and mechanical properties that occur when low carbon
steel is stored for a period of time. Aging is also accelerated by exposure of
steel to elevated temperatures. Stretcher strains and fluting can result from
aging.
ANNEALING
A process of applying heating and cooling to Hot Rolled and Cold Rolled Sheet
products to induce softening.
BASE BoX
An area unit equivalent to 112 sheets 14 x 20 in.
BASE WEIGHT
Nominal weight in pounds per base box is an approximate thickness measu-
rement. The Tin Plate ordered for its thickness equals the unit weight per base
box.
BUNDLE
Consists of ten packages which are 1,120 sheets/packages.
CAMBER
Camber is the deviation of a side edge from a straight line. It is the measurement
being taken on the concave side with a straight edge.
CaRBON STEeL
Steel which owes its properties primarily to carbon without substantial amount of
other alloying elements: Steel is classified as carbon steel when the maximum
content does not exceed the following percentages: Carbon 0.50%, Manganese
1.65%, Silicon 0.30% and Copper 0.20% (when specified).
CCT
Full Hard steel with tension leveling process.
GLOSSARY A-C

CTT
Cold roll steel (tempered), with tension leveling process.
COIL BREAKS
Creases or ridges which appear as parallel lines, transverse to the direction of
rolling. They generally extend the width of the sheet.

78
COLD ROLLED PRODUCT
Flat rolled products for which the required thickness has been obtained by
rolling without heating at room temperature.
COMMERCIAL QUALITY STEEL (CQ oR CS)
Steel of this quality is for uses involving simple bending or moderate drawing.
Commercial quality sheet can be bent flat upon itself in any direction at room
temperature.
CORROSION
Gradual chemical or electrochemical attack on metal by atmospheric moisture
or other agents.
CUTTED EDGE
Side cutting on the pickled and hot rolled process.
DEEP DrAWING QUALITY STEEL (DDS)
DDS is manufactured when Drawing Quality (DS) won´t provide a sufficient
degree of ductility for fabrication of parts. Deep Drawing Quality requires that
the sheet be free from aging and uses special killed steel. This quality is made
by special steelmaking and processing practices.
DRaFT
Reducing thickness of strip by hot or cold rolling.
DrAWING QUALITY STEEL (DS)
As compared to Commercial Quality steel, Drawing Quality steel has a greater
degree of ductility and is more consistent in performance. This greater ductility
and uniformity are a result of higher production standards, selection and pro-
cessing of the steel.
ELECTROLYTIC CLEANING L INE
Electrolytic cleaning process for cold rolled steel.
FULL HARD
Cold reduced sheet that has not been annealed.
FULL HARD FULL HARD
Cold reduced sheet that has not been annealed, where stiffness is required.
HAR
Floor plate in coil.
HOR
GLOSSARY C-H

Hot roll coil, mill edge.

HOT ROLLED
This term describes flat steel products that are produced to finished size by
rolling at high temperatures.
HOT ROLLED CUT TO LENGTH SHEET (ORH)
Cut to length sheets from Hot rolled, mill edge coils, available in light and heavy
thicknesses.

79
HRO
Wide Plate Steel.
HRP
Hot rolled pickled and oil or without oil.
KillED STEEL
Steel deoxidized by silicon or aluminum to reduce the oxygen content to a
minimum so that no reaction occurs during solidification of the metal.
LaminaTIONS
Imperfections resulting from the presence of blisters, seams or foreign inclu-
sions. These are sometimes visible on the surface of the metal.
LUBRICITY
Otherwise known as slipperiness, it is the ability of steel sheet to slide on forming
dies.
Mill EDGE (OM)
Normal rounded edge produced in hot rolling of flat steel.
OilED
Application of a suitable rust inhibitive oil applied to flat rolled steel in the effort
to retard rusting. When surface finish is important, the oil helps to reduce friction
scratches that may develop in transit. The oil coating is not intended to serve
as a lubricant for subsequent fabrication.
PaCKAGES
A unit quantity of 112 sheets for Tin Plate product.
PICKLING
Removal of mill scale or oxidation by immersion of steel into a dilute solution
bath of hydrochloric acid. The steel is then rinsed, dried, and is oiled (as re-
quested).
PITTING
Is a form of extremely localized corrosion that leads to the creation of small
cavities in the metal.
PROFILOMETER
An instrument that measures surface-roughness height in micro-inches. The
height is measured as the absolute deviation from a mean surface.
QUALITY
GLOSSARY H-R

Refers to accuracy of the steel for the purpose or purposes for which it is in-
tended (See Commercial Quality, Drawing Quality, and Structural Quality).
ROUGHNESS
Surface finish or Surface texture of the steel which form on the surface of hot
steel.

80
ScaLE
Typically called Mill scale, is defined as a surface layer of primarily ferric oxide
that forms on the exterior of steel or iron when hot.
SlaB
A semi-finished steel block having an oblong cross-section in which the width is
at least twice its thickness. It differs from a bloom which has a square or nearly
square cross-section.
STiffness
The physical property of being inflexible and hard to bend.
STrUCTURAL QUALITY
When other values of mechanical properties are specified, tests are required
to verify the mechanical specifications such as tensile strength, yield point, and
elongation.
TENSION LEVELING
The process to improve flatness, the strip is under great tension with a slight
elongation above the yield point of the material, and simultaneously leveled.
The material is shape corrected and relieved of most internal stresses.
TeMPERING
A series of heat treatments to “toughen the metal”. In doing so, the temper
process provides a matte or bright surface finish and improves the flatness of
the steel.
TCO
Tin Plate in coil.
TFS
Tin Free Steel. (Electrolytic chromium plate).
THEORETICAL WEIGHT
A calculated weight based on nominal dimensions and steel density of 0.129
kg/in 3 (7.85 gr/cm 3 ) for plate, coil and sheet products.
TOLERANCE
Specified limits of deviation from a dimension.
TRIMMED EDGE
Side trimming on the Tension leveling process.
TRIMMED EDGE (TIN PLATE OR TIN FREE STEEL)
GLOSSARY S-W

Side trimming on the Plating process (Tin Plate or Tin Free Steel).
WeLDING
Fastening two pieces of metal together by softening with heat and applying
pressure.
