Course description
This course deals with the following topics: Matter, its properties and measurement,
atoms and the atomic theory, chemical compounds and nomenclature, chemical reactions,
properties of gases .Gas laws, thermochemistry, stoichiometry,, Hydrogen and
atmospheric gases., Gas Laws and finally electrons in atoms.

Course Objectives
Course objectives include:
 Understand the properties of matter and how to differentiaite between
physical and chemical properties.
 understand how to set up and solve standard chemical calculations bases on
chemical formulas and balanced chemical equations
 Learn the principles of Chemical compounds and reactions.
 Learn the basic concepts of Gases Properties.
 To gain considerable factual knowledge about the terminology and language of
chemistry. In other words you will learn to "speak" chemistry. It has been said, and
rightly so, that there are as many new terms to learn in the first year of chemistry as
there are in the first course in a foreign language .
 To learn to interpret and reason using basic chemical concepts, law, and theories.
Mathematical relationships will be introduced and will be used to solve problems
which are commonly encountered in scientific endeavors.

Course outcomes

Try to check with the students that they understood the followings:

 The properties of matter and how to differentiaite between physical and

chemical properties.

2
 Be able to understand how to set up and solve standard chemical
calculations bases on chemical formulas and balanced chemical equations.
 Understand all types of chemical reactions like oxidation reactions and
precipitation types
 Understand basic properties of gases especially the atmospheric ones.
 Understand the role of energy in chemical reactions ,calculation and
measurement
 Understand the the properties of solutions and Gases.

Requirements

1. Score: For the student to pass this course, he/she has to obtain a total mark of 60

2. In case of not attending:

 Lectures: Students will be deprived from final exam if any student exceeds the
upper limit of absence without accepted reasons determined by registration office
 Exams: Students will not allowed to have incomplete exams except in
emeregency conditions.

3. In case of scientific cheating (e.g. in exams, research, reports) the teacher has the
right to cancel the exam for the students arrested in cheating.

Course evaluation

First exam: 25 % (week 5)

Second exam: 25% (week 10)
Quizzes and homework 10%
Final exam: 40
