APPLICATION OF ROBOTICS
“Robots are increasingly being used in different industries, with drones already being
employed in oil refineries, agriculture, and aerial inspection of manufacturing plants.
Robots are also being used to inspect civil structures, bridges, steel plants, refineries etc.
India’s defence sector has also warmed to the idea of inducting a robotic force into their
fold. Currently, there are robotic bomb disposal squads, and there is a mandate in place
stating that one-third of the armed forces should be comprised of robots in the next
decade”
- The Hindu Editorial
Industrial Applications
- Means of Transport: Automated guided vehicle with scanning

- Car Industry: Robotic arms can execute numerous tasks in the car manufacturing &
assembling procedure. They carry out jobs such as sorting, cutting, welding, lifting,
painting, and bending.

- PCB: Procuring Printed Circuit Boards in large scale without error

Health Applications
- Robotic Surgery: Smaller incision in case of surgery - exposure to outer world is
minimised - chances of infections are reduced. Reduces risk of post surgical
complications.

- Nano Robots: These are even smaller than blood cells. Computer controlled Robot.
MNR i.e. Medical Nano Robots are equipped with Chemotactic sensor when injected
into the body these Robots make navigate to cancer tissue using sensor. These MNRs
are used for targeted drug delivery without damaging healthy cells. In short they can be
used for precision therapy and targeted delivery.

Military Applications
- This sort of robot consists of bomb discarding robots, various shipping robots,
exploration drones. Let us see examples here -

- Heron TP: Armed drone (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle)

- Foster Miller Tallon: Versatile robot, can travel through deserts and defuse bombs -
used in Iraq-Afghan war

- Daksha Robot: DRDO - used for locating, handling and destroying hazardous objects
safely.

- RUSTOM: In surveillance and intelligence gathering UAV

Environmental Applications
- To covered Biodiversity: Using drones for surveillance - targeting poachers and tracking
big cats and other mammals

- Safe handling of disposal of nuclear waste (cancer causing substances)

Disaster Management
- Snake Robots: Can track people trapped in debris in Earth quake, these robots can
sense heartbeats

- Autonomous Robotics System: 3D Mapping of mines - trapped methane and lack of

ventilation can cause death of miners.

Societal and Household Applications

- Scavenging: The Bandicoot Robotic Scavenger, developed by Genrobotics, a start-up
promoted by a group of engineers from Kerala, would clear over 5,300 manholes.
Prevents suffocation and ultimately death too.

- Personal assistance to elderly ex Wakamaru in Japan

- Domestic Robots like ROOMBA can be used for floor cleaning

Space Exploration
- Rover: Roam the planet and collect information, Like Rover in Mission on Mars, can
sense temperature variations and radiations.

- Orbiter: Orbits around the planet and can capture infrared images

- Lander: Equipped with rover, solar panels, transponders and receivers

Agriculture
- Agribot: PSV Krishnan - The ‘Agribot’ can plough the field, water it and sow seeds for
a fixed period of time, with the help of a timer.

- Automate slow, repetitive and dull tasks for farmers, allowing them to focus more on
improving overall production yields.

There is a tussle between the pessimists (who say this time is different and machines really
will take all the jobs), and the optimists (who insist that in the end technology always
creates more jobs than it destroys). The truth probably lies somewhere in between.
