SAM KEMP
MA Concept Art

Freelance illustrator and concept artist

The course was a brilliant opportunity to be surrounded by like-minded

students and lecturers while working on professional briefs.
We had access to a newly refurbished computer
room with state-of-the art technology allowing for
the best learning experience. One of the best things
about the course was having lectures and briefs set
by outsourced professionals such as Atomhawk and
Ubisoft. They were an invaluable asset to the course
and gave us an insight into how studios worked with
concept artists.
I stayed in Woodland accommodation, which was
centrally located to town and campus. I made many
new friends while living there who I am still in contact
with now. The social aspect of being a student was
great, and the campus allows for students to take up
new sports and hobbies.
Since graduating I have worked in several
industries including fashion, contemporary fine
art, theme park design and games design, and I’m
currently freelancing which opens up some great
opportunities across a range of sectors. My course
gave me invaluable knowledge and experience of
the industry and a base skill level to build upon.

JOHN ATKINS
MSc Computer Aided Engineering

Product Designer, Kromek Plc

During a work placement at Black & Decker in Spennymoor I discovered the industrial
design department. I didn’t know it was even a profession until then and I really loved
the idea of creating my own products.
I enrolled on undergraduate industrial design
course and it was intense. We were in the studio
everyday working out how we should design, and
learning various techniques from sketching to model
making. In the workshops we got to use the lathes
and milling machines, sanding and sculpting our
ideas and bringing them to life. We learned how to
create, present and take constructive criticism from
class mates and peers. Thick skin is needed in this
industry. The lecturers inspired me a lot.
I graduated in 2005 and got my first job through
a lecturer who was in touch with a local business
designing wheelchairs. Our lecturers were great at
helping us succeed and linking us with industry. I
then landed my dream job at Vtech in Hong Kong
designing cordless telephones. Two years later I
moved to London to design concepts for Samsung
Design Europe and I also worked with a few London
consultancies as a freelancer.
I moved back to the North East in 2009 to do the
MSc Computer-Aided Engineering at Teesside, and
I secured a postgraduate bursary which helped
cover costs. Shortly after starting my master’s, I got
a job working for Peratech in Catterick developing
quantum tunnelling composite applications in the
R&D department.
The course involved a lot of self-directed study with
a day a week of lectures and an intense week-
long study block every quarter. There was a mixed
class of UK and international students in the same
situation, to further their prospects. Some were
working in petrochemical and some in oil and gas.
The best thing about the course was being able to
work around my own busy schedule.
I am now the lead designer at Kromek PLC in
Sedgefield creating radiation detectors and other
applications for DARPA and the US military.

We now offer an updated version of this masters:
