Keeping pets safe and happy when it’s cold
is a major concern for all pet owners. Marc Mor-
rone, renowned pet expert and host of Hallmark
Channel’s “Petkeeping with Marc Morrone” (airs
weekdays at noon), is a modern-day Dr. Dolittle
and Martha Stewart’s go-to guy in the world of
four-legged and winged beasts, from dogs to cats
and rabbits to parrots.
On his show, Marc reveals what viewers need
to know about caring for their pets, and below
are Marc’s top tips for winter pet care:
n When fitting dogs with boots and sweaters,
make sure to practice inside your home first. If
your pets aren’t comfortable walking around the
house in their gear, they will not be comfortable
in the outdoors.
n Don’t forget about the wild animals in the
winter. Placing a bird feeder outside your win-
dow can mean the difference between life and
death for a little songbird.
n Keep antifreeze out of reach of pets. It is ex-
tremely toxic. Marc cannot stress that enough.
n If you live in an apartment building or co-
op, petition the board to only use pet-safe de-
icer on the sidewalks and courtyard walkways
throughout the winter.
n If you own a reptile, keep extra heat lamps
on hand during the winter months in case one

Concerned reader warns of
high-speed drivers
TO THE EDITOR:
I have been wanting to write this letter for a long
time and decided today is the day. We live on West M-
82 and each year it has more traffic and more accidents
some resulting in death. It’s hard to turn into our drive-
way because the car behind us is in such a hurry to get
around us that they are riding on our bumper. Coming
from the west there is a dangerous dip in the road by
the bridge. We will stop or pull over to the right because

A neighbor and I have both noticed that the only
speed limit sign is just outside the village limits. There
are none all the way to Newaygo! We were taught that on
Michigan highways the speed limit is 55 MPH unless oth-
erwise marked. The expressways are 65-70 MPH (look it
up on mdot.com). So why do people insist on driving 70-
80 MPH on M-82 and other Michigan roadways?
A couple months ago we had 3 accidents in less than
an hour between the expressway and our Tamarack
Creek Bridge (a two mile stretch). Luckily no one died!
People are in such a hurry these days that they don’t care
about their lives or anyone else’s. A life is one of God’s
greatest gifts so please slow down and save a life (maybe
your own!).
NOTE: It’s a proven fact that you will save gas if you
drive slower. With the price of gas we all need to save

“I am finishing my last few weeks here at Sand Lake Elementary and
I would just like to say it has been such an honor to teach in the school
system that I attended as a former student.
I have worked with some awesome people
and have been honored to work with
teachers that I had in elementary, junior
high, and high school,” said third grade
teacher Aaron Young, who has taught for
twenty two years, fourteen of them at Tri
County.
Aaron is moving to Rochester,
Minnesota to be with his new wife,
Elizabeth and eight year old daughter,
Natalia. He plans to continue his teaching
career at the elementary level.
Aaron said, “The truest pleasure was having the honor to teach
across the hall from Fran Hoitenga my kindergarten teacher my first
year here. I will miss the children and supportive parents that made the
job awesome and rewarding as it can be. Thank you Tri County! A part
of my heart will always be here.”

Have you ever seen Bill Vits play his percussion instruments? It’s
quite a sight to see him play. Mrs. Hill and Mr. Young’s third grade class
went to see Bill Vits play. We left for this amazing trip at 9:40, it was
quite a drive, but luckily there were good friends with us. Once we
made it, we were escorted off the bus and down many hallways where
we took our seats in a huge theater. We looked at the stage and saw so
many drums! Little drums, big drums, even drums that didn’t even look
like drums. Then, Bill Vits stepped on stage and the crowd grew silent.
The show began with him telling who he was and what he’d be doing.
Next, Mr. Vits began to play. We loved it when he put on a mask and
played an African drum and sang in an African language. We also liked
one instrument where he would put his hand near it and it would make
a very odd sound. There was a wire sticking straight up and the closer
he got to it the higher the pitch was. One very odd instrument was made
out of donkey toenails.
This is a wonderful opportunity for all third graders and everyone
should get the chance to see this magic man. I hope that we can keep
this going on for as long as possible. Bill Vits is a great percussionist.
