(Gas Power plant, Distribution Systems and Economics of Power plants)
1. (a) Explain the principle of Gas Power plant with line diagram.
(b) Explain the working of Gas power plant with its lay-out.
2. (a) Explain the procedure for finding the total voltage drop and Power loss in a Uniformly
loaded D.C. Distributor Fed at both ends with un equal voltages.

(b) Two tram cars (A and B) 2 km and 6 km away from a substation return 50A and 30A
respectively to the rails. The substation voltage is 600V D.C. The resistance of the
trolley wire is 0.25Ω/km and that of track is 0.3Ω/km. Calculate the voltage across
each tram car.

3. (a) Explain a method of solving single phase AC distribution system in which the power
factors of loads are referred to receiving end.
(b) A single phase distributor 2 km long supplies a load of 120 A at 0.8 power factor lagging
at its far end and a load of 80 A at 0.9 power factor lagging at its mid-point. Both power
factors are referred to the voltage at the far end. The resistance and reactance per km (go
and return) are 0.05ohms and 0.1 ohms respectively. If the voltage at the far end is
maintained at 230 V, calculate
(i) Voltage at the sending end.
(ii) Phase angle between the voltages at the two ends.
4. A single phase ring distributor ABC is fed at A. The loads B and C are 20A at 0.8 p.f.
lagging and 15A at 0.6 p.f. lagging respectively, both expressed with reference to the
voltage at A. The total impedance of the three sections AB, BC and CA are (1+j1),
(1+j2) and (1+j3) ohms respectively. Find the total current fed at ‘A’ and current in
each section. Use Thevenin’s theorem to obtain the result.

5. a) Explain the concept of Ring mains with suitable diagram .

b) Explain the terms load factor, demand factor and diversity factor. How do these factors
influence the cost of generation.
6. What do you understand by load curve? Explain clearly how can you determine load
duration curve and load duration curves from

(iii) Demand factor (iv) Utilisation factor (v) Plant capacity factor (vi) Plant use factor
b) What are ‘load curves’ and ‘load duration curves’. Discuss their utility in the economics
of generation.
8. a) What do you understand by tariff? Discuss the objectives and types of tariff.
b) A diesel station supplies the following loads to various consumers: Industrial consumer =
1500 kW; commercial establishment = 750 kW; Domestic power = 100 kW; Domestic
light = 450 kW. If the maximum demand on the station is 2500 kW and the number of
kWh generated per year is 45x105, determine (i) the diversity factor and (ii) the annual
load factor.
9. (a) Explain p.f. improvement methods with neat diagrams.
(b) A single phase motor connected to 400 V, 50 Hz supply takes 31.7 A at a power factor of
0.7 lagging. Calculate the capacitance required in parallel with the motor to raise the
power factor to 0.9 lagging.
