Ethan Stroud, the son of
Matthew and Joelle Stroud of
East Bethany, has been a per-
former in each of the school’s
musicals in the past four years.
Ethan has also been a mem-
ber of the Academic team for
four years, All-County Band
and All-County Chorus mul-
tiple times, National Honor
Society, varsity swimming and
diving team for four years, and
the tennis team for two years.
Just this past year, Ethan broke
the school diving record, and
was a Scholar Athlete for the
fourth year.
Ethan will attend Messiah
University for molecular biol-
ogy with the intent of going on
to medical school.
Hannah L. Mower
Hannah Mower has lived
in Alexander all her life. In
school, she was involved in Art
Club, National Honor Society,
and Pageturners. Hannah also
did backstage and lighting for
a few elementary plays, and
backstage for last year’s pro-
duction of “Ariel.”
She has been a volunteer at
Genesee County Park, the ani-
mal shelter, and other places.
She won the Distinction
award in 10th grade English.
In her free time she enjoys
reading, spending time out-
side, and playing with her dog.
Hannah plans on studying
zoology at SUNY Oswego.

Claire Slenker is the daugh-
ter of John and Jennifer Slen-
ker.
Claire’s extracurricular ac-
tivities include PageTurners,
Art Club, Math Club, and Na-
tional Honor Society. She has
served as a Student Council
class officer each year.

track, and cheerleading.

Nicole Olszewski of Alexan-
der was involved with many
extra-curricular activities.
They include Math Club (10-
12), Art Club (6-12), Social
Studies Club (12), National
Honor Society (10-12), and
yearbook (12).
She also liked to do volun-
teer work. Some of her favorite
places to volunteer were work-
ing the concessions at school
plays and the NYS Veterans
Home in Batavia.
Nicole has been on the

her high school career and
has taken classes at Dreams
of Dance studio since kinder-
garten.

Michele Lin, the daughter of
Hui Lin and Bi Hua He.
Michele has committed to
Barnard College of Columbia
University, where she will ma-
jor in chemistry and possibly
computer science. She plans to
pursue a career in a STEM field.
At Attica, Michele main-
tained a 4.0 grade point average
and will graduate with an Ad-
vanced Regents Diploma with
Honors.
This past summer, she was
selected to participate in a re-
search program at the Univer-
sity of Rochester’s Laboratory
for Laser Energetics.
She is a leader in various
clubs and extracurricular
activities including National
Honor Society, Attica Senior
High Marching Band, and Best
Buddies. Michele competed
on the varsity basketball team
throughout high school and
was named a Scholar Athlete.
Some of her favorite high
school memories include
band trips, prom, lab assisting,
homecoming week, and hang-
ing out with friends

Alee was a member of the
varsity soccer team for four
years, and earned Scholar Ath-
lete each year.
She has been a member of
National Honor Society for
three years. She participated
in Notre Dame’s Envirothon,
earning first place with her
team in her junior year and
continued on to compete at
the state level. She participat-
ed in NODAHI, the school’s
newspaper club, her junior
and senior year, and was a
member of the yearbook staff
for four years. In her freshman
year she was nominated for
the National Academy of Fu-
ture Physicians and Medical
Scientists Award of Excellence.
In her junior year she re-

Scholar Athlete.
In volleyball, Adryona was
Sectional Finalist MVP and
Semi-Finalist MVP. She was
a league all star her junior
and senior year and Offensive
Player of the Year her junior
year. In swimming, she was
league all star for her fresh-
man, junior, and senior year.
She hass a place on the Notre
Dame top ten leader board
for breaststroke and butterfly.
Her relay teams have school
records for the 400 IM, 100
Free and 400 Medley. As a ju-
nior Adryona was rookie of the
year in track.
Adryona excelled academ-
ically as well, ranking fourth
in her class. She also placed in
Region top 10 for DECA both
junior and senior years. She
was a member of Environ-
mental Action Club, Student
Senate, National Honor Soci-
ety and Mock Trial.
Adryona will attend the
University of New England
where she will major in animal
behavior and continue her
volleyball career as a Nor’Eas-

A drive down memory lane
After the pandemic canceled their prom, Batavia High seniors
instead did a parade to be together one last time

BATAVIA — Instead of get-
ting together for a prom last
weekend, this year’s Batavia
High School seniors gathered
for a different celebration —
a parade taking them from
their high school to the other
schools they attended through
their years in the Batavia City
School District.
“Tonight would have been
Prom Night if it were a tradi-
tional year,” High School Prin-
cipal Paul Kesler said at the
June 20 event. “Some of our
students asked if we could do a
parade today.”
The route took students
past Robert Morris, where
some of the students went for
elementary school, and past
the Middle School. The pa-
rade also stopped at Premier
Genesee nursing home so the
residents there could wish the
students well, before the pa-
rade of 40 to 50 cars returned
to the High School.
The COVID-19 pandemic
has disrupted senior years
across the country, cancelling
proms and changing grad-
uation plans. Schools have
turned to alternative celebra-
tions to support graduating
students.
“I’m very thankful that we
could still have a celebration,
given the circumstances, and I
think this is a lot of fun,” senior
Grace Rudloph said her her
family took pictures before
the parade’s start. “It’s good
to have support from your
community and to have us all
together one last time, other
than graduation, of course. I
think we’re making the best
of it and we’re all very cheer-
ful and prideful of our high
school, so it’s really great.”

“I thought it was really cool
that the school put together

“It was a good experience,”
Jaydon Barber said. “There’s
not a lot we were able to do
this year because of the virus.
It’s good to get out.”
Cody Eisenberger said he
didn’t expect the school year
to get cut off early. “It’s nice to
do everything with everybody
one last time,” he said.
Shayne Moak said he loved
being able to be in the parade
with the class.
“I grew up with 95 percent
of the kids that are in my
grade, I love each and every
one of them, even though I
don’t always show it, especial-
ly with these two,” he said, jok-
ingly pointing to Jaydon and
Cody. I love that it was a great,
big hurrah for our last thing
before graduation ...””

Katherine Pearson
Valedictorian
Katherine Pearson was a
three-sport athlete through-
out high school. She played
soccer, basketball and softball,
and was captain of the basket-
ball team for two years and the
soccer team for one year.
She was a member of Na-
tional Honor Society, Senior
High Chorus, Vocal Effect, Sci-
ence Olympiad, AFS and the
high school musical.
Katherine – Katie to her
friends – volunteered with the
Glasses for Kids Program and
American Red Cross blood
drives, and serves on the Par-
ish Council at St. Elizabeth

She has worked summers

The Class of 2020 is a study in perseverance

June was supposed to deliver
the big moment – the triumph
our high school seniors and their
families have worked toward,
anticipated and dreamed about.
These young women and
men should be walking across a
stage this month to receive the
diplomas for which they studied
and sweated and stressed since
they first entered a classroom.
Crowds should be cheering and
parents beaming. There should
be celebrations as these young
adults put away the things of
childhood and begin the next
chapter in life.
But the traditional ceremo-
nies aren’t happening and the
disappointment is palpable and
understandable. So we should
cheer them from afar since we
cannot do so in person.
Everything changed in March,
when the coronavirus emerged
as a threat to public health. To
slow the spread of the disease,
schools were closed and an-
nounced the remainder of the
academic year was be complet-
ed at home, primarily through
distance learning.
Seniors had their world up-
ended, almost without notice.

their families and friends – they
have had to do without.
These sacrifices offer import-
ant life lessons. No, it’s not fair
that this year’s seniors can’t have
a senior spring and graduation
like those they have watched in
previous years, that they can’t
enjoy what they’ve anticipated
and worked for.
It may be a cliché to say so, but
life often isn’t fair. Things hap-
pen through no fault of our own
– there are lost opportunities,
major disappointments, some-
times tragedies.
Members of the class of 2020
have no doubt learned that it’s
important to keep going and
make the best of things rather
than get bogged down in dis-
appointment. They should be
flexible and handle whatever
may come.
Those lessons, and the resil-
ience they have had to develop,
will come in handy as they move
forward into work or college or
military service or whatever life
holds now.
The year isn’t ending the way
they wanted, but class of 2020
is a model of perseverance and
they should be very proud of
their accomplishments.

Lyndonville adapts, personalizes graduation
Lyndonville Central School
conducted personalized grad-
uation ceremonies in early
June for each of its 45 gradu-
ates. The ceremonies will be
part of a virtual graduation
that was to premiere June 26 at
the time of the district’s origi-
nally scheduled graduation.
Due to the COVID-19 pan-
demic and strict restrictions
on gatherings, the alternative
graduation ceremony was
planned.

daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Sal-
man and Muneeza Abbasey.
While at Warsaw, Sanya
dedicated her time to and
served as captain of the varsi-
ty soccer and track and field
teams.
She enjoyed volunteer-
ing and organizing events
with her peers as president
of the Student Council and
National Honor Society. She
also enjoyed filming morning
announcements in Social
Media class and advocating
through Students Against De-
structive Decisions (SADD).
Outside of school, Sanya
loves reading classics, hiking,
and traveling with her family.
Sanya will attend Yale Uni-
versity, an Ivy League school
in Connecticut, to double
major in global affairs and
economics, and pursue a pre-
med track.
She would like to use her
degree to become a physician
and intertwine her passions
to provide accessible health-
care and education in under-

was in sports, and she had

for softball her junior year

Society, and FFA.
She has also participated
in 4-H as a swine showman
for several years and annually

at Havenwood nursing home
and was a frequent blood
donor through Unyts. Dan’s
future plans are to attend UB
and then continue on to be a
Nurse practitioner.

Abigail Bykowski is from
Alexander, NY and she is the
daughter of Cindy and Tony
Bykowski. During her high
school career Abigail was a

of her Cross Country team.
Abigail was also a member
on the lighting crew for the
Alexander Drama Club pro-
ductions and was a mentor
in the Big Buddy program.

surgeries. He has managed to
take every advantage of the help
that Pavilion Central and its staff
have offered, and has excelled.

Claudia Hardie
Graduating 10th in the Class
of 2020 is Claudia Hardie, the
daughter of Marybeth and Wil-
liam Hardie. Claudia has been
accepted to the 2+2 program
with Monroe Community
College and St. John Fisher
College, where she will start her
nursing degree and play volley-
ball and softball. She hopes to
become a nurse practitioner.
At Attica, she maintained
a 3.9 grade point average and
will be graduating with an Ad-
vanced Regents diploma.
She has been involved in Na-
tional Honor Society for three
years and remains involved in
the community.
Claudia competed on the
varsity volleyball team for all
four years of high school and
played varsity softball team her
last three years. She was named

spending time with friends.
The success that Claudia has
had to reach this level of rec-
ognition has been secondary
to her experiences that have
led her here. To the nights at
the dinner table talking about
issues with family, having her
opinions and ideas valued.
To the days of stopping to see
teachers with questions and
discovering the ability to solve
those. And to the friends and
teammates who have taught
her caring and standing up for
one another. These are the
reasons she feels she is part of
this list.

As you accept your diploma ...

EDITOR’S NOTE: This essay was
previously published in the June
20, 2019, graduation special sec-
tion of The Livingston County News.
This year’s ceremonies – when
they do take place and in whatever
form they may take – will look very
different from a year ago. But the
sentiments and wisdom remains
unchanged.
Young people across upstate
New York will line up to accept
their high school diplomas
during the next two weekends.
Graduation exercises will
often be followed by parties
for the new grads with much
congratulating accompanied
by hand shaking and hugs from
mom and grandma. The diplo-
ma, in many cases will eventu-
ally be filed among important
papers or, as in my case, rele-
gated to the bottom of my sock
drawer.
This diploma, once covet-
ed, is seldom seen again until
someone discovers its final
resting place. Diplomas of doc-
tors and lawyers are more likely
to be framed and are hung
on an office wall as evidence
that the person named has the
proper credentials to practice.
The advice of the com-
mencement address is often
lost in the excitement. Like ad-
vice given the day you get mar-
ried, you hear the words one
day and are expected to begin
living them the next.
Having lived through both
of these events I would like to
share some advice:
Graduates! ... Let me caution
you. You are on the edge of your
own life changing event. Life is
about to go into warp speed for
you. Up until now you’ve been
fed, changed, put out to play
and called in to go to bed and
someone has done your laun-
dry and made sure you got to all
your dental appointments.
HELLO! This is coming to an
end.
Soon you will be in charge of
your own life.
Welcome to baptism by fire.

tion I decided to give you what I
feel is the truth ... and here it is:
All too soon you ALL will be
cast out onto the highway of life
along with millions of other re-
cent graduates all with similar
educations. Many of you may
find you are competing for the
same jobs.
There will be only one differ-
ence between you and the other
guy. You will be the only person
alive who has sole custody of
your life. That is your particular
life, not just your life that may
be spent at a desk, or in front of
a computer, not a life defined
by a uniform, nor a life working
in a laboratory, on an assembly
line, and not just a life that may
be in your mind. It is a life that
will encompass your soul.
People don’t talk about the
soul much any more. It’s so
much easier to write a resume
than to craft your spirit.

a winter’s night, or when you’re
sad or broke or lonely, or when
you’ve received test results that
are not so good.
At this moment, perched
on the edge of your life, having
been recently tooled in your
new credentials of knowledge,
I would ask that you consider
these things about yourself.
You each possess an incred-
ible power to change your life
and the world by changing your
attitude. As you matriculate
this life you will find that your
attitudes are the only string you
have that YOU can “pull.”
You are never powerless as
long as you remember the po-
tential your attitude holds over
your life.
As you seniors leave the
stage following commence-
ment exercises you may feel a
pull toward those people most
important in your life - some
of them probably sharing the
2020
moment and the excitement of
this big day - and you will want
to hug them. Be aware that they
represent the world outside
yourself.
If your education at home
and in school has been a suc-
cess, then the world beyond
you will expand. Hopefully,
your education has outfitted
you to not only “fit in” but to
engage life outside of yourself.
Albert Einstein expressed it
well when he said: “A person
first starts to live when he can
live outside himself, when he
can have as much regard for his
fellow man as he does for him-
self. We are here to do good. It is
the responsibility of any human
being to aspire to do something
worthwhile to make this world
a better place than the one he
found. Life is a gift, and if we
fail to contribute, we fail to ad-
equately answer the question
- Why are we here?”
Take time to discover your
passions. Tonight, tomorrow,
this summer and all through
your life, think about them and
what they are.
I’m talking about those inter-
ests that really mean something
to you - not drugs, nor alcohol
... and not computer games or
your ever present cell phone.
But life-giving passions that
make it worthwhile for you to
make sacrifices. Passions that
will last a lifetime, passions that
when realized will steer your
decisions and continue to add
quality to your life. Don’t live
without including them in your
journey. And decide to try and
choose a life of work that fulfills
some of those passions.
And finally - Get a life!

A real life, not a manic pur-
suit of your next promotion, or
a bigger paycheck, or a larger
house or that perfect partner.
All of these will come to you in
due time. Do you think it would
matter so very much about
these things if you blew an an-
eurysm or discovered a suspi-
cious lump in your body?
Get a life in which you can
discover the sweetness in the
air on a cold winter’s morning,
a life that gets excited over an-
other’s accomplishments, or
a life that can understand the
grace that comes in the mo-
ment you realize that all good
things must come to an end
and that life, for all its wonder, is
indeed fragile.
George Bernard Shaw said
it well: “Life isn’t about finding
yourself. Life is about creating
yourself.”
It doesn’t take a trip around
the world.
And then there are those
words by that prolific author
“anonymous” who is supposed
to have once said: Remember
that life is not a journey to the
grave with the intention of ar-
riving safely in a pretty and well
preserved body, but rather to
skid in broadside, thoroughly
used up, totally worn out, and
loudly proclaiming “WOW,
WHAT A RIDE!”
Go forth to live, laugh, love
and serve.

Hannah Dills
Hannah Dills, daughter of
Scott and Heidi Dills, is ranked
eighth in this year’s graduating
class.
As an active member of the
student-body, Hannah partici-
pated in Art Club, Spanish Club,
Yearbook (editor), Stand Up,
and Mock Trial. She was also a
cast member of school musicals
and Pavilion Central’s Ground-
lings on Stage. Hannah volun-
teered at Perry Public Library.
Hannah’s accolades include
being a HOBY representative
and junior counselor. She was
crowned Prom Queen at the
Junior Prom. She also earned
the Russell Sage Scholarship
and the University of Rochester
George Eastman Leadership
Award.
She earned 52 college credits
while enrolled in the Acceler-
ated College Enrollment pro-
gram at Genesee Community
College.
In the fall, Hannah will attend
SUNY Brockport to study child-
hood education.

Michael Hockey Jr.
Ranked ninth in the Class of
2020 is Michael Hockey Jr.
He participated in basketball,
football, tennis, Student Gov-
ernment (treasurer), National
Honor Society, SADD (vice
president), Stand Up, Interact
Club, and Trap Club.
Michael was a Boys State rep-
resentative during the summer
of 2019.
He has served as a church
lector, and volunteered his
time at “Rake, Rattle and Roll,”
Perry Chalk Art Festival, Rotary
shows, and Special Olympics.

Michael has also extensively
volunteered at the Batavia VA
Medical Center.
His accolades include earn-
ing the four-year Army ROTC
Scholarship, the Clarkson
Achievement Award, and the

ed College Enrollment program
at Genesee Community Col-
lege, Michael earned 53 college
credits.
Michael, the son of Mike
and Tracey Hockey, will attend
University of Michigan to par-
ticipate in the Army ROTC and
study data science.

Rounding out the Top 10 is
Jenelle Lapiana, the daughter of
John and Arlene Lapiana.
Jenelle is a Highest Honor
Roll student who participated in
prom committee and National
Honor Society.
She volunteered at events
such as the Pumpkin Walk,
Trunk or Treat, Holiday De-
Lights Festival, Perry’s Clean
Sweep, and Universal Pre-kin-
dergarten graduation.
Jenelle earned the Self-Driv-
en Award, Growth Award,
Physical Education Award,
and the Keuka College George
H. Ball Community Achieve-
ment Award.
She earned 43 college cred-
its while enrolled in the Ac-
celerated College Enrollment
program through Genesee
Community College.
In the fall, Jenelle will attend
Keuka College to study nurs-
ing.
Parade honors
Perry seniors
Seniors at Perry High School
were honored in early June
with a special series of visits.
Each Perry Central School
District senior was visited
at home on June 6 by High
School Principal Becky Belko-
ta, and advisors Linda Hume
and Angel Lowery – while
staying within social distanc-
ing guidelines. The trio arrived
at each location in a school
bus with a parade of cars,
including Superintendent
Daryl McLaughlin, teachers
and support staff, traveling
behind.
Seniors received goodie
bags that included caps and
gowns, snacks, graduation
masks and more.
