First car stories reveal sense of freedom, pride

The first car is a symbol
of freedom – the ability to go
where you want, when you want
without relying on anyone else
for a ride.
Whether brand-new, a hand-
me-down from the parents or
grandparents, or one in need of
lots of tender-loving care, that
first car likely left a lot of memo-
ries – and maybe some lessons.
And, according to stories
shared by readers of The
Daily News and The Livingston
County News, those cars were
generally full of unique features
– we don’t mean options – and
may not have been the prettiest
looking car son the road.
Consider Renee Forsha Jines’
description of her first car, a
1974 El Camino: “My grand-
father had to fix the fenders;
he used metal sheets and pop
rivets to attach them and he put
a piece of particle board for the
bed.”
“When it would rain water
would leak in and collect on
the floor,” Jines wrote. “When
I turned the corner, the water
would slosh from one side of the
floor to the next.”
Jines had the car for three
years. One day on the way to
work the gas tank fell off. Her
grandfather put a plastic beer
keg in the back and finagled it to
make a gas tank.
“I loved that the car,and man
could it go fast,” Jines wrote.
Matthew Koch told us about
his 1987 Saab 900s that “would
only accelerate if I had the
blinker on” and he could start it
with a quarter or a screwdriver.
None of these quirks mat-
tered, though, as these were
their first cars.
Wrote Koch: “It was the best
car I ever had.”

Kim Grant-Mills: My first car
was in 1979. It was a 1970 Chevy
Impala, four-door with a 400.
What a boat. You could barely
see my head over the steering
wheel.
Dave Coleman: Mine was
my Mom’s ’68 Impala Custom.
Car was mostly a tank until it got
old. Poor engineering starter
directly over the alternator. It
would fry the points and they
would seize in the housing. It
became a “will it start today
kind of thing.”

it happened. A repair guy took
pity on me because I had driven
the wrong way. Fixed it tempo-
rarily, but took half the money I
had for the trip. Planned to get
in around 8, didn’t make it there
until 1 a.m.
Cindy L. Day: Mine was a
1972 Dodge Charger. Bought it
brand new in 1973. Wish I still
had it. My family and friends
would always say ‘spin da tires
on da Charga!’.
Chloe Kwiatowski: My first
car in 1973 was a 1967 Rambler
American. It was a three speed
with the shift on the steering
wheel. I had a mechanic put it
on the floor.
You could fill the tank and
drive all week on $4 worth of
gas!
I had an accident with it in a
snowstorm and hit a tree head-
on at about 65 mph. All I had to
replace was the radiator, fan,
fan belt and one headlight, and
the have the hood bent back so
I could latch it. That car was like
a Sherman Tank and I loved it! I
paid $175 for it and sure got my
money out of it.

month. Those were the days!
Richard Chiverton: I am
writing this for a friend that
passed away back when we
were in high school. He was a
farm kid that learned early what
hard work was all about. When
he was about 12 his grandpa
gave him a plot of land to work.
He was given enough seed for a
first year’s planting. From then
on he was on his own.
After four years of hard labor
he had saved enough money
for his first car. Ever since
GTOs came out in 1964 he had
dreamed of owning one. One
day he called me and asked to
catch a ride into Rochester to
go car shopping. This was 1966
and there weren’t many options
finding a dealer who had a used
GTO.
Finally, we wandered into
Phieler Pontiac, which was
located on Dewey Avenue in
those days. The minute we
walked in there was a beautiful
dark green 1965 GTO sitting on
the floor in front of us. It was
love at first sight. We opened the
door and Bobby sat behind the
wheel with the biggest smile I
had ever seen.
About that time, a crusty old
salesman walks up and asks us
to get out of the car because we
may get it dirty. At that Bobby
the farm kid with an attitude
told the salesman he was in-
terested in buying the car. Not
believing him, the rude gentle-
man continued to point us to
the door.
Another, much younger and
hungrier, salesperson asked us
to sit down and have a 5-cent
Coke out of the machine. The
other man started laughing at
the new salesman. My friend,
who had had enough, walked
over to him and pulled $3,000
out of his pocket and spread
it over his desk saying if you
hadn’t been such a jerk (cleaned
that up a bit) you would be
getting some of this. He then
turned to our newfound rep and
asked to take a test drive.
Well, Bob bought the car that
day and his dad had to go in to
complete the paperwork. …
Not long after he got his car,
Bobby passed away unexpect-
edly and the car was parked in
the barn for many years. I can
still see how happy that car he
had worked so hard for made
him.
Joyce Kramer: My first car
was a 1960 Mercury Comet. I
needed a car to commute to
college (1967-1971). It was from
my dad’s co-worker whose own
dad had passed away. Cost me
$75. However, it was oxidized
green so I called it my “vomit.”
Since that time period was the
“Flower Power” age, I labori-
ously cut out tape petals and
totally covered the car in white
daisies. After two years, I started
to have to replace mechanical
parts repeatedly, so I went to
get another car. The dealer said
he’d take it in trade only if I re-
moved the daisies. I did. But due

stick. You never forget it, or the

everything but the gas station.
Used to go four wheeling at
Steve DeMay’s field and get
airborn. Not the Duke boys, but

on the column. What a trip to
drive. My sister Nancy painted
‘Ramblin Rose in her travlin
Javilin’ on the back trunk. If I got
up to a speed of 60 or so and let
off the gas, boom and fire out
the tail pipe.
What fun it was to be able to
drive to school.
There was big setback. It
would lock up if you didn’t shift
it just right. I quickly learned
how to unlock it under the
hood. My dad took it one day
and came home and said that if
I could drive that thing, I could
drive anything.

Technology is making your car headlights safer

How good are your head-
lights? Probably not as good as
you think.
The Insurance Institute for
Highway Safety recently issued
a list of the 23 safest 2020 pas-
senger vehicles, based mainly
on the institute’s crash worthi-
ness tests.
Of those 23 vehicles, only six
offer top-rated headlights as
standard equipment, the IIHS
said: the Genesis G70, the Hon-
da Insight, the Hyundai Nexo,
the Lexus NX, the Subaru Cross-
trek Hybrid and the Tesla Model
3. The headlights on the other 17
models on the list are rated as
“acceptable.”
“Few vehicles have head-
lights that do their job well,” ac-
cording to the IIHS.
Manufacturers are increas-
ingly replacing old-style halo-
gen bulbs with LEDs, which
provide more light per unit of
energy. But that’s not enough,
said David Harkey, president
of the institute, which is the re-
search and safety arm of the in-
surance industry.
Design of the lamp assembly
and integration with the car
body is key, as are improved
manufacturing processes “to
make sure the tolerances they
need for aim of headlights is
much tighter,” he said.
Safer headlights provide “the
best balance of visibility and
lack of excessive glare for on-
coming vehicles,” the IIHS said
in a news release. New head-
light technologies available on
higher-end cars include swiv-
eling lamps that follow curves
and high beams that turn on
automatically on dark roads and
turn off when an oncoming car
is detected.
“People don’t use their high
beams as often as they should,”
Harkey said. About half of all
traffic fatalities occur between
dusk and dawn, he said.

AAA advocates for adaptive driving beam lights
Driving at night could be made
safer by headlight technology already
on the roads in Europe and Canada,
according to AAA.
New research from AAA found
that European vehicles equipped with
adaptive driving beam headlights
(ADB) increase roadway lighting by as
much as 86 percent when compared
to U.S. low beam headlights. AAA be-
lieves this technology, not presently
allowed by U.S. standards, is the first
real solution to providing more light
for drivers at night, and AAA supports
changes in the law to allow ADB to be
used to its full capability.
“Driving at night doesn’t have to
be such a risky undertaking for Ameri-
cans,” said John Nielsen, managing
headlights help reduce crashes
and the deaths of drivers, pas-
sengers and pedestrians. But
until recently, automakers
have not made headlight qual-
ity a safety priority, according
to the IIHS. “Achieving good or
acceptable scores has been a
director of automotive engineering and
repair, AAA. “The technology not only
exists, but is being used in other parts
of the world to effectively provide the
amount of light needed to keep drivers
and pedestrians safer.”
With ADB, the high beams are
always on and when another vehicle
is detected, that area is shaded to
prevent glare that would otherwise in-
terfere with the other driver’s field of
vision. Some newer U.S. vehicles are
equipped with a similar technology
that automatically switches between
high and low beam, but only when
other vehicles aren’t present. How-
ever, once an oncoming or preceding
vehicle is detected, the car will switch
from high to low beams, losing the
challenge to the automakers,”
Harkey said.
The IIHS began testing and
publicly ranking headlights
in 2016. According to Harkey,
that goosed automakers into
action. Besides the human car-
nage, crashes and deaths cost

NIGHT DRIVING TIPS
n When driving after dark on unlit
roadways, use high beams when-
ever possible. There is a difference
between seeing roadway markings,
signs, and other vehicles, versus be-
ing able to perceive a non-reflective
object in your path.
n Monitor and adjust speeds when
traveling at night to allow enough time
to detect, react and stop the vehicle
in order to avoid striking a pedestrian,
animal or object in the roadway.
n If your car’s headlamp lenses are
anything but crystal clear, have them
restored or replaced to improve light
output.

n Timing belt: Most cars
have interference engines in
which the clearance between
moving parts is so small that
they can end up bumping into

ning on the same timing as
one another.
That is where the timing
belt comes into play. It con-
nects the crankshaft to the
camshaft, helping them stay in
sync. Failing to pay attention
to a timing belt can result in an
expensive engine repair.
Belts have finite service
lives, and heat and wear and
tear are usually their nemeses.
It is important to look for fray-
ing or cracking of belts. Even
belts that look new may have
worn out grooves that lose
their grips on matching pulley
grooves.
Mechanics often use special
gauges to check belts.
Belts also may need to be
replaced due to oil or grease
contamination that can dam-
age the rubber or synthetic
rubber.
It is important to check the
owner’s manual and seek ad-

Despite the fact that au-
tomobiles are now designed
with more safety features than
ever before, the rate of traffic
accidents and fatalities con-
tinue to rise.
The National Safety Council
says safety improvement such
as crash-avoidance technol-
ogy hasn’t reduced accidents,
and driver error is still to
blame for many crashes – with
distractions behind the wheel
and impaired driving leading
the way.
“Most drivers believe that if
their eyes are on the road and
their hands are on the wheel,
then they are focused on driv-
ing,” said Elizabeth Carey,
director of public relations at
AAA Western and Central New
York. “But research proves
that there are hidden dangers
when using a cellphone or in-
vehicle technology. Mental
distractions last longer than
you think and can cause a dan-
gerous crash.”

While professional and amateur me-
chanics are still no strangers to getting
their hands dirty, vehicle maintenance in
the 21st century also involves diagnosing
issues that might arise with a car’s engine
control module.
What is an engine control module?
An engine control module, or ECM,
serves as the primary computer system
for many critical components in modern
vehicles.
ECMs essentially serve as the brains
behind the engines, controlling every-
thing from fuel mixtures to emissions
controls.
Sensors within the engine send signals
to the ECM, and the ECM then uses that
information to help the car run smoothly.
Issues that arise with the ECM can make
driving difficult and, in some cases, im-
possible.
What are some potential
signs of ECM issues?
The automotive service provider
Aamco notes that a faulty or failing ECM
will exhibit various symptoms. However,
it’s important to note that these symp-
toms are not always indicative of issues
with the ECM, so when they arise drivers
may want to schedule appointments with
their mechanics so the true culprit can be
identified and the problem can be fixed.
Things to watch for:
n Check engine light comes on: Many
drivers have experienced the dreaded
check engine light, which indicates some
type of issue with the engine. That issue
can be a failing engine component, or
it may indicate a failing or bad ECM. A
mechanic can determine why the light
has come on.
n Engine performance issues: Even
though the ECM is a separate entity from
the engine itself, a bad or failing ECM
can affect engine performance. That’s
because such ECMs throw off the timing
and fuel settings of the engine, leading to
a sudden and noticeable reduction in en-
gine performance. Engine power may be
affected, and the vehicle may experience
a drop in fuel efficiency and issues with
acceleration.
n Vehicle will not start: A failed ECM
means the vehicle won’t start, as there’s
nothing controlling the engine to tell it
do so. Failing ECMs may lead to struggles
starting the vehicle, and whenever driv-
ers experience these issues, they should
consult their mechanics immediately so
the issue does not escalate to the point
where the engine won’t start at all.
n Erratic engine behavior: A malfunc-
tioning ECM can lead to stalling or mis-
firing. These issues are often sporadic,
which may give drivers the impression
that nothing is seriously wrong. However,
erratic engine behavior is a strong indica-
tor of problems with the ECM, and these
issues should be addressed immediately.

Grinding brakes
Grinding noises indicate a
serious problem with the brak-
ing system. If the grinding sound
is audible when pressing on the
brake pedal, this is likely because
the rotor disc is coming into
contact with part of the caliper.
This typically occurs because
the brake pads or rotors are ex-
tremely worn down, causing the
steel backing of the worn out pad
to grind against the rotor. In such
instances, replace the brake pads
immediately. If the grinding
noise is audible while the vehicle
is in motion, debris might be
stuck inside the brakes. Drivers
might be able to dislodge this de-

Squealing
Some brake pads are
equipped with steel clips that
serve as wear indicators. When
brake pads have worn down,

of other things as well. Squeal-
ing noises are sometimes heard
immediately after brake pads
or rotors have been replaced. In
such instances, the noise typi-

in. Glazed pads also can create a
squealing sound. When calipers
stick, the brakes stay partially ap-
plied, producing excessive fric-
tion or heat. The heat causes the
brake pads to glaze.
