Introduction
Light Rail Vehicles

Increased use of public transport significantly improves the quality of

life in cities that are chronically overburdened by traffic. Today,
leaving the car at home no longer means putting up with
inconvenience and loss of mobility. Bombardier’s portfolio of trams
and light rail vehicles allows for attractive transport
solutions while offering modern city dwellers the highest
level of comfort.

4
Why Rail-Bound Public Transport?

Optimising the fleet and reducing operational costs – Dresden
awarded Bombardier to develop the longest tram in Europe.

Tram network: 131.3² km, 12 lines

Number of passengers: 94 million/year
In order to renew its fleet, DVB has ordered 32
Bombardier FLEXITY Classic vehicles (with
45 m the longest tram in Europe) since December
2000, operation commenced in early summer
2003. For fewer passenger volumes DVB ordered
20 shorter vehicles (30 m length) which will be
delivered from 2006 onwards.
Special features of the tram system:
• Steady increase in passenger volume on lines
crossing the city centre
• Special topographical requirements of the DVB
network with a gradient of up to 7.69 %.
• Continuous extension of the tram network

Connecting down-town and suburbs –
a new bi-modal system created by Saarbahn and Bombardier

Tram-Train fleet: 28 Bombardier FLEXITY Link

dual-system vehicles
Tram-Train network: 25 km, 1 line: from
Riegelsberg on the outskirts of Saarbrücken
through the city centre to Sarreguemines in France
Number of passengers: 40,000/day*
Operation of the FLEXITY Link vehicles
commenced in 1997
Special features of the Saarbrücken tram-train
system:
• An increased volume in commuters traveling from
the outskirts to and through the city centre called for
the implementation of a modern transportation
system operating both on inner-city tram- and heavy
rail lines
• Extension of the line to the North of the city under
construction, resulting in a total length of 45 km – by
combining existing infrastructure with newly built
tracks 38
