(APHIS) confirmed April 9 the presence of H7N3 highly pathogenic avian influenza
(HPAI) in a commercial turkey flock in South Carolina. APHIS noted that this is the first
confirmed case of HPAI in commercial poultry in the US since 2017, and it appears that
this HPAI strain mutated from a low-pathogenic strain that had recently been found in

 THAILAND – AFRICAN HORSE SICKNESS The Pirbright Institute has confirmed
an outbreak of African horse sickness (AHS) in Thailand and identified the virus

 US – COVID-19 IN PETS The CDC and the USDA’s National Veterinary
Services Laboratories (NVSL) announced April 22 the first confirmed cases of SARS-
CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) infection in two pet cats in separate areas of
New York. These are the first pets in the U.S. to test positive for SARS-CoV-2. The pet
cats both had mild respiratory illness and are expected to make a full recovery. At this
time, CDC and USDA said routine testing of animals is not recommended. (Feedstuffs)
 CANADA – MASTITIS RESEARCH Researchers at the University of Alberta
have developed a bioassay using cow urine to screen for subclinical mastitis (SCM) in
dairy cattle. Their results showed a total of two dozen metabolites that differentiated
SCM and control cows at eight and four weeks prepartum, respectively, with the top five
metabolites having an accuracy to predict SCM of 1.0.  The research indicates that the
urine of dairy cows can be used with very high accuracy to screen dairy cows for
susceptibility to SCM prior to entering into the dry-off period as well as form the basis for
a potential new pen-side test. The research was published in the journal Research in

Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM) announced that its “2+2” veterinary program

veterinary students will begin their doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) education at the
Veterinary Education, Research & Outreach (VERO) program on West Texas A&M

 US – COVID-19 IN PETS A pug in North Carolina has become the first pet dog in
the US know to have tested positive for coronavirus.  The family was involved in a study
at Duke in which the mother, father and son tested positive for COVID-19. During this
study, the family had their pets tested and found out their pug, also tested positive for
the virus after experiencing mild respiratory symptoms.  A cat and another dog tested

 EU – FMD TESTING Scientists at The Pirbright Institute in the U.K. and Istituto
Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Lombardia e dell’Emilia Romagna in Italy have
developed a diagnostic test that can detect whether an animal has been infected by or
vaccinated against any type of foot and mouth disease (FMD) virus. Current FMD
antibody tests for detection of infected or vaccinated animals are only able to detect
antibodies that are unique to each serotype (although they may have some inter-types
cross-reactivity). The research was published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.

 US – COVID-19 DETECTION Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s
School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) are looking to dogs to help in COVID-19
surveillance programs. Penn Vet said a new pilot training program utilizing scent
detection dogs to discriminate between samples from COVID-19-positive and COVID-
19-negative patients will explore the sensitivity and specificity of scent in disease
detection. The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Chemical

 CHINA – PET DOGS The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has
declared dogs to be companion animals, stating that “with the progress of human
civilization and the public’s concern and preference for animal protection, dogs have
evolved from traditional livestock to companion animals.”  The ministry’s first draft of the
Directory of Genetic Resources of Livestock and Poultry lists 18 typical farm animals
such as pigs, chickens, cows and rabbits as livestock, excluding dogs from the list.

million fine.  In addition, AHI was placed on probation for a period of one year. All of

definitive agreement under which Merck will acquire the US rights to Sentinel Flavor
Tabs and Sentinel Spectrum Chews. Merck will make a cash payment of approximately

Connect. The company also has agreed to acquire Wildlife Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and
its wholly owned pharmacy subsidiary, ZooPharm, which serve veterinarians and
patients in the wildlife and zoo markets; Wedgewood Pharmacy intends to maintain the

patent covering a vaccine that protects pets and horses against snake bite venom, and
has submitted a USDA application for approval of the vaccine. The vaccine provides for

 INDIA The Carlyle Group announced that, together with CA Harbor
Investments, an affiliated entity of CAP V Mauritius Limited, it has agreed to acquire an
equity stake of up to 74% in SeQuent Scientific Limited, the largest pure-play animal
healthcare company in India, for a purchase price of INR 86 per share. SeQuent’s
revenue for the twelve months ended December 2019 was INR 11,606 million ($155
million) and profit after tax (before minority interest) for the same period was INR 851
million ($11 million). Sequent’s animal health formulations business, Alivira Animal
