OFFLINE PARTICLE SIZE ANALYSER.

1.0 CALIBRATION PROCEDURE FOR OFFLINE PARTICLE SIZE ANALYSER :

The Instrument engineer takes action as follows, for calibration :

1.1 Power On System

1.1.1 Switch on the Dispersion Unit

1.1.2 Switch on the Optical Bench. Leave it Powered on for 30 minutes before making a
measurement to let its temperature stabilise.

1.1.3 Switch on the computer and start the software by double clicking on the Mastersizer 2000
icon. If a User Name dialouge appears, type in your user name and click OK

1.1.4 Create a measurement file by selecting File-New from the menu

1.1.5 In the New Measurement File dialouge, type Starter sample in the File Name field then click
Save. The results will be saved to a measurement file Starter sample.mea.

1.2 Calibration of the Instrument with QAS Sample

1.2.1 Remove one bottle of the QAS Standard from the consumables pack

1.2.2 Open the Scirocco's sample area lid and add the full contents of the QAS Standard bottle to
the sample tray .Add the sample between the centre of the tray and sieve, but not too close
to the sieve. This prevents it entering the measurement zone before measurement starts.

1.2.3 Set the sample gates to 10mm.Close and lock the lid. Set the horizontal feed slit aperture
to 2.5mm

1.2.4 Select Measure-Start SOP from the menu

1.2.5 Available SOP's are listed in a dialogue. Select the Starter sample SOP, enter the sample
details with serial number of the sample for the dispersion unit being used and click the
Open button. Take care to select the correct venturi type, stainless steel or ceramic

For a Scirocco 2000 the software controls the dispersion unit settings.

1.2.6 The Measurement Display dialogue Appears

1.2.7 The SOP automatically measures an electronic background, aligns the optical system and
measures the optical background .

1.2.8 Press the Start button. On a Scirocco 2000 this starts the measurement

1.2.9 After about one minute the sample will be measured and the result calculated

1.2.10 The measurement records are automatically saved to the measurement file Starter sample
mea. Four records will be created; three relate to the measurement of the sample, the
fourth is an average result.

1.2.11 Now click on the Average record in the Records view and select the Result Analysis(M)
tab. The top Part of the report provides some sample details, sample analysis information
and important Particle Size Distribution statistics. The Central part of the report provides a
graph of the Size Distribution. The lower part is a data table recording the percentage of
material at different points in the size distribution

1.2.12 For a QAS Sample, all sample dispersion units should give a result showing a single peak
with a median d(0.5) between 58.77 and 64.9 microns. For fuller pass/fail criteria relating to
an individual dispersion unit, check the QAS data sheet .
