BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF

RIZAL’S BIRTH

• June 19, 1861, Wednesday, between eleven and


twelve o’clock at midnight.

• His birth cost his mother’s life.


RIZAL’S BIRTH

• He was baptized at Catholic Chruch of Calamba on


June 22, 1861, by a priest, Rev. Rufino Collantes.

• Rizal’s godfather: Rufino Collantes, Pedro Casanas.


RIZAL’S BIRTH

• The name Jose was chosen by his mother who was a


devotee of St. Joseph.

• He was given the second name Protacio.


CALAMBA: THE CRADLE OF A GENIUS

• Calamba is a town named after a big native jar


surrounded by a big hacienda which belonged to
the Dominican Order.

Don Francisco Mercado
• 1818-1898
• Born in Biñan, Laguna.
• Studied Latin and Philosophy
at the College of San Jose,
Manila.
• Died at the age of 80, a year
after hero’s execution.

• Born in Manila.
• Studied at Sta. Rosa College.
• A woman of fortitude.
• Died at the age of 85.

THE NAME RIZAL
• The original surname of the Rizal
family was “Mercado”.
• In 1849, Gov. Narciso Claveria issued
a decree directing all Filipinos to
choose and adopt a new surnames.
• Don Francisco chooses the name
“Rizal”.
• Rizal – “Ricial” which signifies “green
field”.

structure.
• With sliding wide windows shutters
with capiz shells.
• Thick walls of lime and stone
bounded the first floor.
• Second floor was made entirely of
hard wood.

• Respected and considered one of the richest
families in Calamba.
• One of few families to own a carruaje.
• First to have a home library with almost 1,000
volumes.
• First to send their children to Manila to study in
College.

• They raised rice, corn and sugar.
• They also raised chickens and turkeys in their
backyard.
• Rizal family was truly a happy social institution were
parenteral respect and affection reigned supreme.
