It is the Mercedes-Benz exhaust gas aftertreatment

technology by selective catalytic reduction (SCR) ap-
plied in their commercial vehicles (trucks and buses), to
comply with the Brazilian legislations requirements, through the Air Pollution Control by Automo-
tive Vehicles - PROCONVE phase P7, it establishes the maximum allowed limits of gas and par-
ticulate material emissions for diesel commercial vehicles with gross weight above 3,856 kg,
manufactured from January 2012.

Refuel your vehicle only with low sulfur content diesel oil
In order to assure the BlueTec5® exhaust gas aftertreatment system proper operation, the vehi-
cles with engines according to PROCONVE P7 (Euro 5) are to be refueled only with diesel oil with
low sulfur content (S50 or S10 diesel oil). The use of diesel oil with high sulfur content, besides
considerably raising the gas and particulate materials emission index, leaving your vehicle in dis-
agreement with the legal requirements of environmental protection, causes damages the com-
ponents of injection system and exhaust gas aftertreatment system, and increases the cylinders
and the engines segment rings wearing.

ARLA32 (AdBlue®)
The product ARLA32 (NOx Automotive Reducer Liquid Agent) is a urea-based chemical reagent,
essential for BlueTec5® exhaust gas aftertreatment system operation. The vehicle with en-
gine according to the PROCONVE P7 (Euro 5) must be always kept filled with
ARLA32, because the engine operation without this products considerably raises the
NOx (nitrogen oxide) emission levels and the vehicle no longer complies with the le-
gal requirements of environmental protection.
Note: The product ARLA32, nomenclature adopted in Brazil for the urea-based chemical
reagent, is of specific use for the exhaust gas aftertreatment system, also internationally known
by the nomenclatures AdBlue® in Europe and DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) In the Unites States of
America.

G ATTENTION
The lubricants and fluids are harmful to the health, because they contain toxic and caustic
integrant parts.
The lubricants and fluids are easily flammable. In the case of fuel gas, additional cares just be
taken during the refueling, because there must be, under no hypothesis, proximity of flames or any
other ignition sources. Only trained personnel can perform the refueling procedure with fuel gas.
Observe the following instructions to prevent eventual injuries on you and other people.
Do not inhale the vapours. In closed environments, make sure that there is enough ventilation to
prevent intoxication.
The lubricants and fluids must not get contact with the skin, eyes or clothes. In the case of contact,
clean the affected part of the skin with water and soap to prevent cauterization or other injuries.
In the case of contact with the eyes, wash it thoroughly with plenty of clean water.
In the case of ingestion of lubricant or fluid, immediately seek medical attention.
Immediately change the cloth dirty with lubricant and fluid in order to prevent the danger of fire
and eventual injuries.
It is forbidden to approach live flames, have light bulbs on unprotected and smoking when handling
lubricant and fluid due to its easiness of fire.
Keep the lubricant and fluid out of reach of children.
Always observe the danger indications related to the toxicity, the danger of cauterization and the
danger of fire indicated in the lubricant and fluid packages or even in the fuel gas filling stations.

Lubricants and fluids are:

Recommended lubricants

G
Lubricants are to be adequate to the vehicle components, therefore, utilize only
products tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz.
The lubricants recommended by Mercedes-Benz are listed in the site: www.mercedes-
benz.com.br, classified according to their applications and properties.
If eventually is necessary to add oil in the aggregate to reestablish the correct level,
use a lubricant of the same class as the product contained in the aggregate.
Do not mix lubricants of different classes, because their properties would be
negatively changed and it could damages the aggregates components or considerably
reduce its life. Damages from mixing the lubricant from different classes are not
covered by the vehicle warranty.
Strictly observe the specified lubricants for each type of aggregate. The incorrect
application of lubricants can cause damages in the aggregates components, which are
not covered by the vehicle warranty.
Os recommended lubricants do not need special additives. These additives can,
including, have a negative effect on the recommended products properties and cause
damages to the aggregates.
In the case of doubt regarding the lubricants application, contact your Concessionaire
or Mercedes-Benz Authorized Workshop.

Fuel
Refuel your vehicle only at reliable fuel stations, demanding the specified fuel (diesel oil
with sulfur content equal or below 50 ppm) and free of contaminants.
The utilization of diesel oil with sulfur content above 50 ppm (0.005% of weight), besides
considerably raising the gas emission index, leaving your vehicle in disagreement with the
legal requirements of environmental protection, damages the components of the BlueTec5
exhaust gas aftertreatment system. From the other side, the use of diesel oil with high
index of contaminants saturates prematurely the fuel filters and causes a sensible loss of
engine power, requiring the change of the filtering elements before reaching the intervals
specified in the maintenance plan.

Fuel sulfur content

The vehicles fitted with engine according to PROCONVE P7 (euro 5) BlueTec5® exhaust
gas aftertreatment system are to be refueled only with diesel oil with low sulfur content
(S50 or S10 diesel oil).
G
The utilization of high sulfur content diesel oil (S500 or S1800 diesel oil) will cause
serious engine damage and to the exhaust gas aftertreatment system.

i S50 diesel oil (sulfur content equal to 50 ppm or 0.005% in weight)

i S10 diesel oil (sulfur content equal to 10 ppm or 0.001% in weight)
Fuel gas (CNG)
The fuel gas refueling must only be performed with natural gas free from contaminants
and under proper refueling stations for this purpose.

G ATTENTION
During the fuel gas refueling, the engine just remain OFF and the vehicle properly grounded. Only
trained and authorized personnel cam perform the refueling procedure with fuel gas. For any
maintenance or repair intervention in the fuel gas system, it is mandotory to consult a Dealer or
Mercedes-Benz Authorized Workshop.

Before carrying out maintenance work, always read the technical documentation, as for example,
G ATTENTION the Operation Manual and the workshop information. Always have the maintenance work carried out
at the specified intervals. Otherwise, damages can occur in the vehicle's components or failures in
safety systems operation. It can result in accidents with injuries on you and other people.

Engine coolant

G
Never add only water in the engine cooling system. Refuel the cooling system only with
the recommended coolant, previously prepared.

O engine cooling system must be filled with the recommended coolant and proper for the
conditions where the vehicle will be used. In the case of doubt, consult a Dealer or
Mercedes-Benz Authorized Workshop to inform about the most appropriate coolant for
your vehicle.

Coolant with additive according to the class MB 312.0

The coolant prepared with this additive can only be used in regions where the environment
temperature does not allow its freezing, because this additive does not have anti-freezing
properties. The mixture ratio must be of 10% of additive to 90% of drinkable water.

Coolant with additive according to the classes MB 325.0, MB 325.3 or MB 326.3

The coolant prepared with additives of this class can be used in any environment
temperature, because these additives have anti-freezing properties. The mixture ratio
must be of 50% of additive and 50% of drinkable water for the products according to the
classes MB 325.0 and MB 325.3.
Te products according to the class MB 326.3 are already dilutes and ready for use.
The coolant can only have its volume completed with additive equal to the one being used.
If, for any reason, there is the need to change the additive class, the entire cooling system
must be drained before perform the filling with a new coolant of a different class.

Chassis lubrication
The chassis components with lubrication points under pressure must be lubricated
independently from the regular maintenance services, in the following maximum intervals:
• severe service - each 5,000 km
• mixed service - each 10,000 km
• highway service - each 15,000 km
The chassis components must be lubricated in reduced intervals in periods of much rain
or under conditions with much mud or dust.
The chassis components must also be lubricated whenever the vehicle's lower part is
washed or when driving in flooded areas.
For vehicles predominantly utilized in off-road conditions, we recommend that the
transmission shaft universal joints are also lubricated at least once a week.

24 Considerations regarding vehicle maintenance
Considerations regarding vehicle maintenance

Vehicle maintenance
To maintain the operation safety of your vehicle, the jobs indicated in the maintenance
plan are to be carried out regular and periodically in the recommended intervals,
according to the vehicle's maintenance category.
Provide so that the maintenance works are always performed in a qualified workshop that
has the technical knowledge and tools to perform the required works. For this purpose,
Mercedes-Benz recommends the Concessionaires Network or Mercedes-Benz Authorized
Workshops.
The works indicated in the maintenance plan do not include repairs. Repair work, when
necessary, is to be carried out with a separate job order.
The maintenance service intervals are grouped in the interval tables according to model
and maintenance category of the vehicles.
Engine oil and oil filter change
The interval to change the engine oil and the oil filter depend of:
• the use conditions of the vehicle;
• the type of oil used;
• the time: at least each 12 months.
The maximum engine oil change interval is only reached with the utilization of the
recommended lubricants (see listed products in the site:
www.mercedes-benz.com.br).
Do not add any additive to lubrication oils approved and recommended by Mercedes-Benz,
as the use of such additives can influence negatively the properties of the lubricant and
cause engine damage.
The viscosity class SAE for the engine oil must be chosen due to the average temperature
in the regions in the respective season of the year.
The use of engine oil not approved and not recommended by Mercedes-Benz can restrict
the rights of the Warranty claims.
Any Dealer or Authorized Service Post can provide additional information regarding this
issue.

Interval to change the engine oil and the oil filter

The engine oil and the oil filter is to be changed every maintenance service, according to
the respective maintenance category of the vehicle (SEVERE SERVICE, MIXED SERVICE or
HIGHWAY SERVICE).

Before carrying out maintenance work, always read the technical documentation, as for example,
G ATTENTION the Operation Manual and the workshop information. Always have the maintenance work carried
out at the specified intervals. Otherwise, damages can occur in the vehicle's components or
failures in safety systems operation. It can result in accidents with injuries on you and other
people.
Considerations regarding vehicle maintenance 25
Remark:
The engine oil will have to be changed every M maintenance service, independent of
the class of lubricants utilized (MB 228.3 or MB 228.5).
Remark:
The consumption of a small percentage of lubricant oil is absolutely normal to any
internal combustion engine. Considering that the intervals to change the engine oil are
relatively long, in general and, depending on the vehicle application, it is absolutely
normal to add oil in the oil pan in the internal between the oil changes to compensate
the normal engine oil consumption. However, if you suspect that the lubricant oil
consumption is excessively high, please go to a Concessionaire or Mercedes-Benz
Authorized Workshop to assess the oil consumption.
Only add oil in the oil pan to replenish the oil level when the engine oil volume is in the
minimum level or lower. Do not add oil in the oil pan when the oil level is within the
maximum and minimum level indications.

Aggregates oil change

The aggregates oil (manual gearbox, automatic gearbox, hydraulic retarder and drive axle)
has to be changed strictly at the terms indicated in the respective table of maintenance
service intervals and oil change or, at maximum, every 2 years, whatever occurs first. If
the aggregates oil is not changed or if the oil change terms were exceeded, the aggregate
may get damaged. Damages resulting from the lack of oil change or from the oil change
outside the specified intervals are not covered by the Mercedes-Benz guarantee.
The oil change intervals of the aggregates (gearbox, hydraulic retarder, drive axles), in
some cases, do not coincide with the maintenance service intervals.
If the limit time estimated to change the oil precedes the estimated limit time for the M
maintenance services, the oil change must be made in the specified limit time in order to
assure the aggregate maximum life.
When the term foreseen for the oil change is after the M maintenance services, it is up to
the Customer's discretion, to respect the specified interval to make the full use of the
lubricant utilized or, to anticipate the oil change carrying out the service together with the
maintenance services to avoid additional vehicle stoppages.
Remark:
In some cases there is an option in the oil change interval of the aggregate in function
of
class of lubricant utilized.

26 Considerations regarding vehicle maintenance
G
Some drive axles, although sharing the same nomenclature between them (axle HL4 for
instance), are different in design characteristics and, because of this, are treated
differently in the intervals of lubricant change. Thus, in the maintenance interval tables
there will be a distinction of the type of axles when necessary and the identification has to
be done as demonstrated below.
Drive axles Type 1
The following axles are part of this group:
• HL2 (743.457)
• HH4; HL4 (743.252; 746.980)
• HL5 (745.089; 745.098; 745.099)
Drive axles Type 2
The following axles are part of this group:
• HH4; HL4 (746.875; 746.876; 746.881; 746.882; 746.888; 746.889; 746.990; 746.991)
• HO4; HO6 (746.218; 746.270; 746.271; 746.973; 746.974)
• R 390 (746.984; 746.999)
Utilize only recommended lubricants according to the type of aggregate.
The lists of homologated lubricants can be checked in the site:
http://www.mercedes-benz.com.br/onibus/servicos-e-pecas/oleo
Confirmation of the maintenance services and oil change
The Concessionaire or Mercedes-Benz Authorized Workshop has to record in this manual,
in the respective maintenance confirmation fields, the services of maintenance and oil
change carried out by him, checking all the jobs effectively carried out.
Genuine Mercedes-Benz Parts and Accessories
In order to the maximum life and operational safety to your vehicle, only use genuine parts
and accessories, including air, oil and fuel filter elements, genuine Mercedes-Benz.
Services at the Customer charge
Checks referring to the daily inspection are the responsibility of the Customer/Driver and,
therefore, are not included in the vehicle's periodic maintenance services.
The daily inspection must be made on a daily basis by the driver before start the vehicle
operation.
G
If any irregularity is checked during the daily inspection that can be addressed by the
Customer/Driver, send the vehicle to a Concessionaire or Mercedes-Benz Authorized
Workshop to have it repaired.

It can result in accidents with injuries on you and other
people.
Considerations regarding vehicle maintenance 27

Maintenance services of the body and additional implements

assembled by third parties
The regular maintenance services of bodies and of the additional equipment assembled by
third parties are to be carried out following the instructions of the respective makers to
guarantee the circulation safety of the vehicle.
Control of exhaust gases emissions
In order to comply with the legal dispositions in force regarding the exhaust gases
emissions, observe that the engine and its peripheral systems maintenance must be
performed according determined specifications and can need special measurement
devices. Changes or interventions are not allowed in the components that can change the
exhaust gases emissions. All the Concessionaires and Mercedes-Benz Authorized Service
Workshops are familiar with the regulations regarding the exhaust gases emissions.
Pneumatic system air drier and oil separator
To make sure that the compressed air dehumidification and the oil separation from the air
compressor, the dry element cartridge and the pneumatic system air separator must be
strictly replaced within the recommend time interval recommended in the maintenance
plan. The cleaning of the air desiccator and oil separator element is not permitted under
any hypothesis.
The reuse of air desiccator and oil separator element cartridges, as well as, the utilization
of cartridges not approved by Mercedes-Benz and/or not specified for your vehicle or, the
non replacement of the air desiccator and oil separator element cartridge at the
recommended intervals, can result in deficient air drying and in the insufficient separation
of the oil coming from the air compressor and, consequently, cause serious damage in the
components of the brake system and in the ARLA32 injection system.
Only use air drier element cartridge and oil separator genuine Mercedes-Benz.

28 Considerations regarding vehicle maintenance

Front and auxiliary axles wheel hubs

G Attention
Failure in the wheels hub maintenance can cause from the bearings early wearing, characterized
by the noisy operation, up to the eventual bearings locking with the risk of releasing the vehicle's
wheels, which can result in accidents with unpredictable consequences.

Te grease in the front and auxiliary axles wheels hubs must be changed strictly in the
recommended time intervals according to the vehicle's operational conditions, as
indicated in the maintenance time intervals, respectively for the severe, mixed and
highway service categories.
Observe that in determined exceptional conditions of operation, the wheel hub grease
change interval has to be reduced for the vehicles that are utilized practically every day,
however, with a very low average monthly mileage.
Tires rotation
The tires rotation is a procedure recommended to assure an even wearing of the thread
band.
In a general way, tire rotation has to be carried out at maximum every 10,000 km.
However, as tire wear is influenced by a series of variable factors in function of the
operation conditions, this interval may be re-evaluated by the Customer, together with the
tire maker's Representative and adapted to the type of vehicle application.

It can result in accidents with injuries on you and other
people.
Considerations regarding vehicle maintenance 29

Tightening of nuts and bolts

G ATTENTION
The checking of the tightening and, if necessary, the re-tightening of fastening nuts and bolts of
some chassis components is essential to compensate for the seating of the parts and to preserve
the circulation safety of the vehicle. The checking of the tightening and eventual re-tightening of
the fastening nuts and bolts is to be carried out at the intervals indicated in the maintenance plan
of the vehicle. Additionally, the wheel fastening nuts and those of the sprig pack "U" bolts (vehicles
with steel spring suspension) require additional checks and re-tightenings at the intervals
indicated below.
Not carrying out this service of checking and re-tightening of fastening nuts and bolts at the
recommended intervals can result in the separation of the chassis component and cause an
accident with serious or fatal injuries.

Fastening nuts of the spring pack "U" bolts:

• 1st checking and re-tightening: 1,000 km
• 2nd checking and re-tightening: 5,000 km
• Following checks and re-tightenings: As per maintenance plan
Wheel fastening nuts:
• 1st checking and re-tightening: 50 km
• 2nd checking and re-tightening: 1,000 km
• Following checks and re-tightenings: As per maintenance plan
G
In the case of repairs, the intervals indicated for checking and tightening and eventual
re-tightening of nuts and bolts refer to the distance covered by the vehicle after the
assembly of the respective component.

30 Daily inspection
Daily inspection

The daily inspection consists in checking under the driver's responsibility, which must be
systematically performed before starting the vehicle daily operation, in order to assure its
operation and driving safety.
The vehicle maintenance plan does not include the vehicle's daily inspection work.

G ATTENTION the Operation Manual and the workshop information. Always have the maintenance work carried
out at the specified intervals. Otherwise, damages can occur in the vehicle's components or
failures in safety systems operation. It can result in accidents with injuries on you and other
people.
Definition of the vehicle maintenance category 31

Definition of the vehicle maintenance category

The scope and the frequency of the maintenance jobs are established, firstly, by the
different conditions of vehicle utilization.
The Mercedes-Benz maintenance system satisfies all these requirements, enabling to
select from three maintenance categories, the one with the maintenance terms most
adequate to the type of vehicle utilization. Therefore, evaluate in a critical way the
conditions at which your vehicle will be predominantly submitted to. Then, consciously
choose, together with your Mercedes-Benz Concessionaire, the most suitable
maintenance category for your vehicle maintenance.
G
If, due to the vehicle sale or due to the changes in the operation conditions, the
maintenance category has to be changed within the warranty term, this change must
be made with the participation of a Mercedes-Benz Concessionaire and communicated
to Mercedes-Benz do Brasil Ltda.

Heavy Duty
