Product Information Sheet

EPOFINE® - 4859 / FINEHARD® – 4859

(HIGH STRENGTH TOUGHENED EPOXY ADHESIVE SYSTEM FOR
STRUCTURAL APPLICATIONS)

PRODUCT

EPOFINE® - 4859 and FINEHARD® - 4859 is a two-component, thixotropic paste type

toughened adhesive system. This cures at room temperature (> 5oC) and has multiple
applications.

APPLICATION

EPOFINE® – 4859 / FINEHARD® - 4859 system is suitable for a wide variety of metals,
ceramics and many other substrates such as certain plastics and composites.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The following advantages make it ideal for industrial use.

• Simple mixing ratio (Resin : Hardener = 100 : 43 by weight or 100 : 50 by volume)

• Tolerant mixing ratio (± 2 %).
• High Strength Toughened Adhesive System.
• Good Performance up to +140oC.
• Excellent water resistance.
• Very Good chemical resistance and electrical insulation properties.

PROPERTIES

EPOFINE® – 4859

FINEHARD® - 4859

Characteristic Test Method Unit Specification

Appearance Visual Yellowish paste
Viscosity at 25oC mPas 10,000 – 15,000
Flash Point ASTM-D 93 °C > 120
Density at 25oC ASTM-D 4052 g/cc 1 ± 0.05
Storage life Years 1

Mix Ratio, Epofine®-4859: Finehard®-4859 = 100 : 43 (w/w)

Pot life at 25oC = 100 – 120 minutes

Cure schedule to get LSS of 1 N/mm2 = 1 hour at 60oC

LSS after curing at 40oC/16 hours

On aluminium = 23 – 25 N/mm2
On steel = 25 – 27 N/mm2
ABS plastic = 14 – 15 N/mm2
FRP composites = 20 – 25 N/mm2

The joints improve in LSS when kept at 90oC, even in highly humid environment.

Break down voltage at 25oC = 40kV/mm

Coefficient of linear thermal expansion = 70 – 80 x 10-6/K

PROCESS

The strength and durability of an adhesive joint, to a great extent, is decided by the pre-
treatment of the substrate. Strongest joints are made by mechanically abrading or chemically
etching. The mechanically abraded surfaces shall be further cleaned with a solvent. Minimum
treatment that is required is cleaning by an oil-free solvent like trichloroethylene or
environmentally friendly degreaser such as FINECLEAN – EC.

The resin hardener mix is generally applied using a clean spatula to the pre-treated and dry
substrate. An adhesive layer of 0.05 – 0.10 mm thickness generally imparts the greatest lap
shear strength to the adhesive joint. As soon as the adhesive is applied, clamp the joints with
an even contact pressure.
STORAGE , HANDLING AND DISPOSAL

Storage : Store in a cool, dry place.

Shelf life : As given above, when stored in original sealed containers at 10 - 40oC.
Handling : Use hand gloves and protective glasses.
Disposal : Dispose by incineration or as per local regulations.

SAFETY INFORMATION

Flash point : Look for the individual values as above

Precautions : In case of skin contact, wash with soap and water.
In case of eye irritation, bathe the affected eye with
running water for at least 15 minutes, and get
medical attention.

FITNESS TO USE

Though we have taken adequate care to give you reliable information as above, as exact
conditions of use are beyond our control, we advise that a trial must be done on actual
operation, before starting any large scale production process with our products.
