The DIN EN 12193 "Sports Location Lighting" standard regulates minimum optimal lighting
levels, and depending on the type of sport and level of competition it sets specifications to
ensure optimum viewing conditions for athletes, referees, spectators and TV cameras as well as
limiting any factors of disturbance. It's a question of the quality of light and how good light
itself is achieved, and this is not a matter of taste but is objectively specifiable with the aid of
various quality attributes.

Uninterrupted television broadcasting must also be guaranteed with power failure, and
luminaires with instant hot re-ignition enable switching to an alternative supply voltage.
HDTV
LIGHTING
Lighting solutions for HDTV 9
In the case of indoor sports, the SiCOMPACT® FL MIDI S LED floodlight from Siteco emits extremely
efficient, standard-compliant and HDTV-compliant light, and its primary strength is with super
slow motion.
Here 300 frames per second are often used for broadcasting, and conventional lighting pulsing
with 50 Hertz results in distinct flickering in recordings. The Siteco floodlight supplied flicker-free
high-speed recordings with up to 1500 frames during testing conditions in a television studio.
Even with 30% power reduction the light was still suitable for HD recordings.
With Siteco there's more green than merely the grass on the playing field.
Luminaires
Sophisticated thermal management
at the very highest level is a part of
the construction principle with
floodlights and projectors, and
optimal thermal dissipation
over the housing ensures
a maximum operating life
of all components.
Daylight systems
Siteco systems with
special solar protection
prisms reflect the “hot”
direct sunlight away, and
guide “cool” diffuse daylight
into the inner space.
Supplemented with artificial
light, this means optimal light for
sports halls with maximum efficiency
and optimal usage of the hall around the
clock.
Efficiency factors 11
LED technology
A long service life, minimum effort for maintenance and lower operating costs are the
primary benefits with use of LEDs. The SiCOMPACT® FL MIDI S LED floodlight
from Siteco sets new standards with regard to lighting quality and
efficiency. It achieves an operating life of 50,000 hours and can
be infinitely dimmed. Temperature monitoring integrated
as standard increases durability still further.
Light sources
Efficient conventional lamps such as as OSRAM's POWER-
STAR HQI®-TM with 600 or 1000 watts achieve a nominal
service life of up to 10,000 hours. This saves operating costs
and lengthens maintenance cycles. Twin lamp operation
with various wattages enables efficient switching at two
levels, for example for training or competition needs.
Lighting management
Sports and wide-area lighting with LED technology from Siteco can be
controlled via DMX or DALI, and this means the lighting can also be used for events
and stage shows. Stepped switching is possible with conventional lamp technology, but
LEDs can be infinitely dimmed. And with LED solutions, components for luminous flux adaptation
according to needs and for time-dependent luminous flux control can also be integrated for the
reduction of operating costs. In ancillary areas such as parking lots, lighting control via sensors
enables the switching of lighting depending on daylight or motion.

Indoor sport 13
We show you on the following pages how you can optimally present
indoor sports with luminaires from Siteco, in compliance with
standards, with high efficiency and with individual planning.
And with outstanding quality of light for athletes and spectators.
Quality of light
Sport means emotion. To communicate this
on-site and via television, sports lighting
must render colour optimally, supply
standard-compliant illuminance and avoid
bright-dark zones and abrupt shadowing.

High speed on ice skates: ice hockey is one of the quickest team sports in the world. In order to
be able to skate at up to 50 km/h the players need physical strength, supreme skill and agility.
The puck is three times quicker on the ice, and with fast shots it travels at over 170 km/h.
That's a challenge for the players and a challenge for lighting as well.
In order for spectators and players to follow such speeds, lighting for ice hockey has to achieve
more than just illuminance levels of up to 750 lux. High luminance aids visual acuity and strong
contrasts, and if luminance of the background and peripheral playing field areas is higher than
the black puck then its perception is improved. Higher illuminance levels are also applied
to the goal areas to aid the response capacity of the goalkeeper and referees.
Lighting requirements
+ high illuminance levels and good contrasts
+ stronger brightness for specific playing
field zones
+ avoidance of reflections
+ ball protection
Lighting solution
If a hall is to be flexibly used then the lighting must offer maximum flexibility as well.
Multifunctional arenas require special care with light planning, as already in the planning stages
the whole bandwidth of what might take place needs to be considered.
The lighting installation has to comply with pre-specified sports standards, avoid disturbing
effects from daylight and glass facades and guarantee safety for athletes and spectators. At the
same time, dimmable general lighting is recommended for events and their corresponding
setting up and disassembly processes, and also for reasons of energy efficiency as well.
Supplementary projectors implement show effects and complex control systems, and separately
regulated circuits are the core of a multifunction hall.
Lighting requirements
+ standard-compliant sports lighting
+ dimmable general lighting
+ separate control of systems
+ ball protection

Perfect images
The major sports associations have defined
criteria that guarantee best possible
television broadcasting. These include good
colour rendition values and high levels of
homogeneity as well as high illuminance
for the cameras.
FIFA guidelines
Lighting for large stadiums and arenas has to perform in more ways than one. On the one
hand the visual requirements of athletes and spectators must be ensured and on the other
the factors of efficiency and environmental compatibility have to be implemented.
Rotationally symmetric distribution luminaires are the specialists for transporting light
across large distances, sending light at heights of up to 60 metres across playing fields with
ease. This high mounting height also reduces the risk of glare, and at the same time
reflectors in the luminaire guide the light downwards. They thus contribute to avoiding light
pollution and undesired stray light: a match below and the night sky above.
The lighting system of a stadium must also fulfil the criteria for television broadcasting, and
here colour rendering values should not fall below Ra 65. High illuminance is also decisive
for HDTV and slow motion shots, with 3500 lux in the horizontal and at least 2000 lux in the
vertical specified for international sports events: high performance sport for high
performance projectors.
Lighting requirements
+ light distribution across large distances
+ HDTV-compliant lighting
+ high colour rendering
+ avoidance of light immission
Lighting solution
Athletics is one of the classics under open skies, in the evening hours and in darkness as well,
because at that time training groups are complete, spectators are free to watch and in the
months of summer the temperatures are cooler.
The lighting for such facilities is also classic: systems on four or six masts, often combined with
lighting on the spectators' tribune ensure requisite illuminance levels of 100 to 500 lux according
to level of the sports. Overlapping projector cones minimise abrupt shadowing.
While large stadiums usually have rotationally symmetric projectors, smaller facilities and
training grounds often have luminaires with asymmetric optics and very precise cut-offs.
These illuminate uniformly, guide light downwards and avoid light pollution and disturbing
stray light.
With track and field athletics it must be considered that grounds with running tracks, jumping
and throwing areas are larger than a football pitch, and individual disciplines have
differing demands. With pole vaulting for example, luminaires must not be installed in the main
viewing axis of the athletes, and in finish areas a vertical illuminance of 1000 lux has to be
ensured to guarantee correct judging decisions and precise finish photos.
Lighting requirements
+ sufficiently high mounting for glare
reduction
+ good cut-off to avoid stray light
+ alternative power supply for emergencies
during competitions
+ minimisation of hard shadows

A hot match during the afternoon, training with a cool head in the
evening hours... Illuminated tennis facilities in the open have a high
leisure value and ensure optimal usage of courts.
High homogeneity with low levels of hard shadowing are best achieved
via a 4-mast system. With tennis it is important to consider that the
sport places high visual demands on players, and rapidity and precision
are vital. Lighting must be mounted at sufficient height to avoid glare
for the players and to sufficiently brighten the space above the court
from where balls come flying.

+ varying lighting levels for high efficiency
+ high uniformity on the playing field and

In winter the days are short, and this is practical when athletes also
want to train in the evening hours. At the same time sport in darkness
with floodlighting is also highly popular.
With ski-jumping there are two decisive moments for athletes: the
jump and the landing. Sufficient brightness is needed in order to
correctly judge and perform a jump or landing. Projectors aligned up
the slope ensure sufficient vertical illuminance for the flight, but care
must be taken: luminaires must not be in the direct view of athletes.

A striking appearance
Major sports centres can be seen from far
away, and stadiums and arenas are a part
of city sights, associations, clubs and
legendary competitions. Suitable facade
illumination underlines such a philosophy
during the hours of darkness as well.
Safe routes
Completely homogeneous illumination of
parking lots gives a feeling of safety and
also lowers the risk of accidents. People can
be easily recognised between vehicles, and
good outdoor lighting also achieves trust
because it prevents attacks.
Facades themselves can become interactive surfaces. Traxon Technologies with its e:cue brand,
a part of the OSRAM family along with Siteco, makes this possible. Traxon is the global leader
with solid state lighting and related control systems. With a partner network, Traxon brings
facades to life and transforms creative visions into experiences. An example is the YAS hotel
with its illuminated shell on the Formula 1 circuit in Abu Dhabi or the National Stadium in
Peru where the outer shell is controlled in accordance with the mood in the stadium.

A visit to the stadium or weekly training: with sports, the access route is
not an end in itself. The infrastructure and primarily enough parking
lots ensure that no time is lost before and after a match.
Well-illuminated parking spaces reduce the risk of accidents and also
give a feeling of personal safety.
In terms of quality of light and light control, Siteco mast luminaires set
standards with their globally recognised radial facetted optics for
conventional lamps or the patented high definition cover of the
Streetlight 10 LED. Light is only emitted onto the parking surface, vehicle
drivers are not subjected to glare and residents are not annoyed.

Large sports centres are a lot more than just a playing field, turf, pool or
track with tribunes. Utility rooms and offices are the motor behind it all.
And where sports are carried out there are also changing rooms and
showers, often with weight rooms and catering areas. The application
determines the luminaires installed, ranging from damp-proof
luminaires protected against humidity and dust to accentual lighting of
foyers.
Lighting also plays a major part in the energetic concept of the facility,
because economy is not only determined by the efficiency of playing
field lighting but in the ancillary areas in particular the use of efficient,
long-life LED technology offers enormous potentials for saving.
