Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched an employment scheme for
migrant workers, who returned to villages from cities during lockdown.
Background
The Garib Kalyan Rozgar Abhiyaan was launched by Mr. Modi via
video conference in a village in Bihar in the presence of Chief Ministers of
five states Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand
and a minister of Odisha.
Details
The scheme will work in a mission mode in 116 districts across these
six States where the maximum number of the migrant workers have
returned.
Public works undertaken under this campaign will have a resource
envelope of ₹50,000 crore with the objective to provide livelihood
opportunity to workers who have returned to their native places and other
affected people residing in villages.
Highlights
The campaign will be run on a mission mode for 125 days, involving
intensified and focused implementation of 25 different types of works to
provide jobs to the migrant workers.
Industry groups will be formed near villages, towns, and small cities
for making make different products from local produce, and packing things.
Cold storage facilities to be developed at the cost of 1 lakh crore to
store farm produce locally. The way to sell crops at higher prices will be
opened when farmers will connect with the market
