SECTION 03053
WATER
PART 1 GENERAL
A. The basic and minimum requirement of water used for concrete mixes, washing of
equipment, wetting of surfaces of pounding during curing or for wetting formwork and
washing reinforcement.
1.03 REFERENCES
1. ASTM C109 – Test Method for Compressive Strength of Hydraulic Mortars (using
2-in or 50 mm Cube Specimens)
A. Whenever required take samples of the water being used, or which it is proposed to
use, for mixing concrete and test them for quality.
B. Samples of water of not less than 5 litres shall be taken, sealed and sent for testing at
an approved independent laboratory, prior to the approval of any water source, and
whenever the sources of water is changes periodically during the continuance of its
use.
C. Water of questionable quality should comply with the physical tests of Table 03053 –
1 chemical limitations listed in Table 03053 – 2
D. No source of water shall be used until the required tests have demonstrated its suitabil-
ity for concreting.
E. The use of water from a municipal or government supply does not preclude the re-
quirement for testing.

PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.01 GENERAL
A. Water shall be potable water and shall comply with the requirements of BS 3148 ex-
cept as modified below.
2.02 pH OF WATER
A. Temperature of water for concrete shall not be less than 5 °C and not more than 25 °C
B. Water may be cooled to not less than 5 °C by the gradual addition of chilled water or
ice as follows:
1. no ice particles shall be present in the mix
2. alternatively, flaked ice may be used
3. ice to be used shall be crushed and shall be a product of frozen water which com-
plies with the acceptance criteria of Table 03053 – 1 and 03053 – 2
