The inflation rate for 2017 of CAR decreased to 0.01 percent from the rate of last year.

This was because of the 1.1 percent decrease of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages, 0.02

decrease in Furnishings, Household Equipment & Routine Maintenance of the House, 0.6

percent decrease in Health Commodities, 0.01 percent decrease in Recreation and Culture

Commodities, 2 percent decrease in Education, and 0.6 percent decrease in Restaurants &

Miscellaneous Goods & Services.

Under the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages, Food Commodities had a price decrease

of 1 percent. The main contributors of this were the decrease in Vegetables (11 percent), Corn

(4.6 percent), Sugar, Jam, Honey, Chocolate & Confectionary (3.2 percent), Food Products

N.E.C. (1.5 percent), Oils and Fats (1.1 percent), Milk, Cheese & Eggs (1.1 percent), and Rice

(0.2 percent). For the Non-Alcoholic Beverages, there was also a decrease of 0.3 percent.

Under the Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Maintenance of the House,

although majority of its sub classifications have an increase of price, Glassware, Tableware, and

Household Utensils decreased 0.5 percent and Goods and Services for Routine Household

Maintenance decreased 0.8 percent.

For the Health Commodities, Hospital Services had a decrease of 0.8 percent and the

Medical Products, Appliances and Equipment had a price decrease of 0.7 percent.

Under the Recreation and Culture, the overall price for Other Recreational Items &

Equipment, Gardens and Pets had a decrease of 3.3 percent and a 0.3-decrease to Newspapers,

Books and Stationary.

For Education, Pre-primary &Primary Education decreased 1.9 percent, Secondary

education decreased 0.2 percent and the Tertiary Education decreased for 5 percent. This is
because of the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Law, providing free tuition for all

students of the 112 state universities and colleges all over the country.

Under the Restaurants & Miscellaneous Goods & Services, Catering Services had a

decrease in price of 1.5 percent and the Personal Effects N.E.C. had a price decrease of 0.8

percent.

On the other hand, price increase in other commodities were 0.4 percent in Alcoholic

Beverages and Tobacco, 1.9 increase in Transport. No changes in the price were reported for

Communication.

For the Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco, prices for alcoholic beverages increased 0.8

percent while tobacco products decreased 0.1 percent.

Under transport, there was a 1.9 percent increase in the overall prices if Operation of

Personal Transport Equipment and a 0.1 percent increase of prices in Transport Services.

Since the year 2015, the overall average inflation in CAR fluctuates in a light manner

from 1.5 to 1.9 to 1.8 respectively. For the year 2014-2015, the main contributor of the overall

price increase for the region is the price for fruits, which had an 11 percent inflation rate. There

was, however a large decrease in the prices of Operation of Personal Transport Equipment. The

increase of the overall prices from 2015 to 2016 was mainly due to the inflation for the Alcoholic

Beverages and Tobacco. Specifically, Tobacco Product had an overall price increase of 10.2

percent. On the other hand, Food products, N.E.C. had the biggest deflation of 3.6 percent.
