Lesson: Envisioning yourself as a detective we must find the unknown variable.

The variable is defined as an x,y, or z any letter that represents the unknown. As
our “Origins of Algebra” video explains the Middle Eastern Peoples defined
Algebra as: to complete a formula. So our task as detectives or mathematicians is
to complete the equations by discovering what the unknown variable is.

1. m – 5 = 12
Show work: m = 12 + 5
m = 17
Check your work:
  17- 5 = 12

2. x + 11 = 15

3. 5 + t = 23

4. 4 – k = 12

Questions:
Simplify the following algebraic expressions.
A) -6 + 5 + 12x – 6
Work: Collect like terms
-6x + 12x + 5-6
6x – 1 final answer because we are asked to simplify not solve.
