The Indiana Voter Registration Project Voter Registration Drive - 2016 Training Manual IveP 2016 1 What is Canvassing? Canvassing is the means by which we reach potential applicants — by going door to door and in high traffic areas, IVRP canvassers will engage communities in order to register them to vote. Compensation Canvassers are paid a rate of $75 dollars per 6-hour shift. Canvassers must work the entire shift to receive payment. IVRPIH6ES not fay anivassers! Ber registration form collected. Canvassers must provide a picture ID as well as proof of their SSN number. For EACH shift that a canvasser works they are required to fill out a complete independent contractor with their name that matches their ID. The compensation period is Friday-Thursday. Checks will be available the following Wednesday during specified times. If you are scheduled to work during compensation day you will be given your check at the end of each shift. Canvassing Schedule Monday-Sunday Schedule: 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM 2:45 PM 3:00 PM 3:15PM 3:45 PM 8:45 PM 9:00 PM Arrive at Office, sign in, fill out contracts, and use restroom Daily briefing and practice sessions. Depart Project Office in teams with turf, and literature. Dropped off in Assigned Spot. Canvassing in ASSIGNED turf area Get Picked Up @ Assigned Spot Return to Office, complete and confirm paperwork w/ team leaders IveP 2016 3 Canvassing Guidelines + Be polite and courteous and respectful. + Keep a charged and functional cell phone throughout your entire shift + Always use the correct entrance. * Only take directions from office staff. + Keep your canvass partner within sight at all times. + Stay in contact with your supervisor and office staff at ALL times. * Be alert and aware of your neighborhood area. + Follow the script as a guide, but make it your own. + Know that you're changing Indiana one person at a time + HAVE FUN! * Enter anyone’s home for any reason. * Accept or give gifts of any kind from anyone. * Use profanity, debate, or argue with the person at the door. * Leave assigned area for any reason without notifying and getting permission from your supervisor. + Smoke or chew gum while canvassing. + Use your cell phone unless it is an emergency. * Place literature in, on or around mailboxes. + Post anything campaign related on social media (IG, FB, Snapchat, etc) + Speak with anyone from another campaign + Advocate for or against any candidate or party ‘© Talk to the press. IveP 2016 4 Dress Code Project T-shirt over collared shirt. Wear well-fitting dress pants - black or khaki are fine. NO JEANS, NO SWEATPANTS, NO TIGHT/LEGGINGS. Comfortable shoes such as sneakers. Dress for the weather. No hats, no sweatbands, no tongue piercings, no facial piercings, no visible tattoos, and sensible earrings for ‘women only. All men with long hair must tie hair back. IveP 2016 Project Materials Canvass Script: The canvass script is a template for every conversation. It is designed to be informative to eligible voters and encourage them to register. Scripts may vary by turf. Walk Li: assigned neighborhood. Go to all houses on a street — even the ones not If you are on doors, you will be provided a list of residents in your listed — as the people who are not listed on the walk list are not registered to vote. These are the people to whom we want to speak. Voter Registration Application: Registration forms must be filled out by the applicant themselves in blue ink. Please ask applicants to use all caps and no cursive. YOU CANNOT WRITE ANYTHING ANYWHERE ON THE FORM. KNOWINGLY PROVIDING FALSE INFORMATION ON A VOTER REGISTRATION | Tally Sheets and Registration Tracker: At the end of each shift, you will out your tally sheet and registration tracker and give it to the Office Director. Make sure to double-check your math each time you tally your numbers. Tally sheets should include a description of a relevant conversation you had with a community member that day. T-Shirts: We will distribute t-shirts each day and collect them at the end of the shift. Please make sure you do not leave the office with your t-shirt. Shirts cost the IVRP money and the cost of lost t-shirts will be deducted from your pay. IveP 2016 Who Can Register To Vote In Indiana? In order to register to vote in the state a person must be: * Acitizen of the United States of America; * Aresident of Indiana and the city or township where the person is applying to register to vote; * 18 years of age by November 8 2016 IveP 2016
