PLASTIC SOLUTION SEMINAR

ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORT

The Science Department had the “Plastic Solution” Seminar on June 28, 2020, a simple
talk to develop awareness on how to reuse plastic bottles and create solutions on
plastics. The seminar is a movement repurposes plastic bottles by stuffing them with
cut-outs of non-biodegradable waste such as plastic bags, straws, cigarette butts,
sachets, food wrappers, etc. These stuffed bottles, also called eco-bricks, can serve as
alternative fillers or bricks in the construction of walls, fences, garden pots, benches
and the like. According to the speaker, Miss Angelica De Castro, the Environmental
Management System Ambassador of St. Mary’s College of Baliwag and the Program
Director of Planet CORA, “plastic does not biodegrade at all so basically it lasts forever.
It is important to minimize the use of plastics because they never go away. Recycling
has a limit when it comes to plastic. First off, they need to be made of the same
chemical make up and there are tons of different kinds of plastic. Second, you can only
melt and repurpose plastic a limited amount of times before the chemical structure of
the plastic renders it unusable.” At the end of the seminar, the speaker asked the
students about their pledges in reducing the use of plastics at home, in school and in
the community. The students were also assigned to have lunch box Fridays, bring their
tumblers and to have their own bottles with stuffed folded plastics at home to join the
campaign in reducing the garbage of plastics.
