1.0 Purpose

1.1 To ensure that the Demolition of Existing Bridges activities are executed safely and
in accordance with the contract requirements and that all quality assurance/ control
activities are conducted in a systematic manner, works are inspected and
conformance is verified and documented.

2.0 Scope of Work

2.1 This procedure is applicable to the following works associated with the Project
titled, Construction, Completion and maintenance of Roads and Interchanges of the
existing part of the 7th Ring Road –RA240 Project to comply with the contract
specification and other applicable standards.

2.2 This method statement outlines the procedures to be followed in Demolition of

Existing Bridge at locations shown on Contract drawings and as directed by the
Engineer. (Bridge Existing in Road #40).

7.0 Prior Activities

7.1 Ensure that all related documents are the latest AFC revision.

8.0 Procedure

8.1 Photo attached with all related work mentioned on it and explanation of the
procedure as follows:

A. Sand layer of 60 cm will be spread all over the Asphalt road under the bridge area
to protect the asphalt from any concrete pieces falling from the demolished
bridge.

B. 1 Unit Machine of CRUSHER Caterpillar of 35 meter arm length will start to


demolish the existing side Cantilever barriers on the longitude line to avoid
any damage to the new constructed pier heads, after providing the required
protection to the piers.

C. 3 Unit machines of Jack Hammers are available as stand by and will be placed
on the ground level, as indicated on the photo attached, and also will help
in demolishing the concrete after the bridge collapsed on the street.

D. 4 Unit machines of Jack Hammers on each side on top of the bridge level above
abutment A &B will Start to demolish the deck slab at the support point of the
deck on the abutment and the deck slab will be collapsed and fall down on the
street.

E. Please note that as per the drawings of the existing bridge post tension steel
strands is expected to be available in the pre-cast units and therefore all require
safety precaution is considered during demolishing the bridge. (No labors or
human will be available during demolishing process, only operators of
machine will be available).

 After complete removal of the bridge, other group will start to take out all
steel bars and strands from concrete and start to isolate them and all salvage
steel bars will be stacked in the containers or half lorry in order to be
removed from site.

 All debris shall be disposed of and removed to the dumping area approved
from Kuwait Municipality.

 10 to 15 units of dumping trucks with 2 units of loaders and 4 unit of bucket

machines will be used to put all the salvage material on the trucks which

will transfer it to the dumping area.

F. Side Slopes backfilling around the abutment will not be removed during the

demolishing of the bridge and it will be removed later after opening ROAD #40 for
traffic.

 Demolishing of retaining wall will start after complete removal of backfilling

behind the existing abutment and demolishing will continue till the removal
of foundation and new backfilling material will be used to backfill the space
under the demolished retaining wall as per MPW Specs.

G. All middle supported columns (Piers), will be removed till foundation and layers of

backfilling material will be used to backfill the empty area as per MPW specification.

 All spreading sand on the asphalt road will be removed properly and to be
cleaned by road cleaning asphalt machine and all the salvage material will
be removed also and street will be opened according to MOI Permit.

9.0 Responsibilities

9.1 The Project Manager and Deputy Project Manager will coordinate with Site Engineer
to ensure that the necessary resources to implement the approved Method Statement,
HSE plan have been allocated to the task.

9.2 The Site Engineer (SE) will ensure that the site preparation activities are conducted according
to the approved Method Statement, and HSE plan.

9.2.1 Ensure all necessary approvals are obtained prior to start the work.
9.2.2 Convey all technical data to civil foreman and to ensure that the foreman
understood the activities to be executed.

9.2.3 Arrange & ensure the required manpower to execute the work.
9.2.4 Ensure safe working procedures are followed in accordance with the site safety
plan.
9.2.5 Prepare the necessary Work Inspection Request (WIR's) to arrange the consultant
Engineer for inspections.
9.2.6 Organize the work in a safe manner to ensure that safety and protective
equipment are being properly utilized.

9.3 The Material Engineer (ME) will ensure that the materials being used are in accordance with
the Project Specifications and approved Material Submittals. He will be in charged with the
field laboratory and will undertake the necessary tests as required for the project with the
assistance from Laboratory Technicians.

9.4 Quality Control Engineer


9.4.1 Review all documents and test reports.
9.4.2 Ensure that all other discipline activities that must be inspected within the

concrete casting works have been inspected and ready for operating safely.
9.4.3 Organize and allocate inspection works.
9.4.4 Perform pre inspection to determine acceptability prior to inspections.
9.4.5 Co-ordinate with the consultant inspectors.

9.5 Foreman
9.5.1

Conduct the toolbox meetings and briefing for his crew workers the potential
hazards and precautionary measures to be taken during the casting process.

9.5.2 Ensure that certified fire extinguishers are deployed at site in the right location.
9.5.3 Ensure that all engaged personnel have right PPE and all equipment are
experienced enough to execute the work.
9.5.4 Control the workmanship quality by directing and instructing his crew workers

9.5.5 Responsible for proper execution of the formwork levels and dimensions as per
approved drawings.

9.5.6 Ensure that, all the tools & equipment are available at site to execute the different
activities.

9.6 Safety Officer

The Safety Officer shall be responsible for safe execution of work activities in
compliance with the approved HSE plan & project HSE requirements.
9.6.1 Ensure that all HSE requirements are applied and implemented according to the
MPW requirements while executing the works.
9.6.2 Ensure that recommendations of workplace precautions are followed up strictly.
9.6.3 Stop any/or all works in case of specified recommendations/ observations are not
applied by the construction team.
9.6.4 Inspect & ensure that all engaged personnel have got correct PPE and all
equipment’s are perfect and certified to execute the works.
