3 Types of Desires
Desire for Land :
Includes desire for house, arable lands
and other landed property.
Desire for Gold :
Includes desire from material positions,
money and other forms of wealth.

Desire for women :


Includes inordinate desire for women
and female company.
We live on the earth with the help of
women and money. Why change the
three basic desires? Let us live and find
success through moderation.
• All it means that we realize the worth of every
one of them and live in accordance with the
tenets of measure & Method.

 Nishkamya Karma : Doing anything in a


detached manner

 Kamya Karma : Deeds born of desires


 Contact with objects and other living
beings should be at the sensory levels
alone.

 Thoughts should remain detached


from experiences

 Detachment is a state of mind


 Detachment is avoiding entanglement
with sensual pleasures.

 Actions performed in a state of


awareness is Nishkamya Karma.

 Detachment is a state of the mind


Reasons behind Desires

Survival is the basic reason behind desires


Desires are natural
Desires should be restricted to actual needs
and fulfilled in a proper manner.

Example : 1. Pillow while sleeping


2. Use of protective cloth when
removing hot things from a stove
It is natural for the mind to be drawn to wealth,
people, sex, fame & prestige during one’s
lifetime

It is important they be achieved with


awareness, a sense of duty, and in keeping with
the tenets of measure & method
 Natural needs
 Needs that provide progress in life
 God realization, which is the purpose of life

They too are desires


 Desires cannot be eliminated totally.

 They should not be eliminated either.

 They should only be moralized.

Find the reasons behind desires


Seek circumstances to achieve them
Remain aware of the possible consequences
Fulfilled suitably they bring peace”
 Moralization of Desires involves
ridding oneself of unwanted desires and
fostering noble ones.
• The reason behind the desire should be
properly analyzed.
• Ascertain whether the circumstances,
opportunities & facilities enable fulfillment
of the desire.
• Attempts to fulfill them may be commenced
if they are favorable.
• Desires can be fulfilled provided they help
spiritual progress and are beneficial. to the
society.
• Increase in material possessions
affects health adversely.

• Increase in wealth ruins mental


peace
• Increase in dependents affects
once freedom.
Temperaments are born
of Desires
Inordinate desires transform into the six
evil temperaments.
Fulfillment brings contentment.
Maneuver of the six temperaments

Emotional State - Awareness

Greed - Contentment
Anger - Tolerance
Miserliness - Charity
Immoral sexual passion - Chastity
Vanity - Equality
Vengeance - Forgiveness
 When the nature of desire is fully understood and
made use of in a beneficial manner it transforms
into “Gnana”.

“Thoughts are the root of all deeds


The basis of pleasure and pain
When the fire of desire burns bright
The body and mind, used again and again –
The fire to douse, without fear;
There being no way but this
Let desires that beget ill effects
Be shunned; for a life of bliss.”
Moralization of Desires - Practice

 Make a list of the desires.


 Analyze each one of them separately.

• Is it essential?
• Are facilities available?
• Will the outcome be good / bad?
• If the answers to the above questions are in
the positive the desire can be fulfilled through
proper planning and execution.
• If the answers are in the negative the desire
has to be eliminated through suitable auto –
suggestions
•The above practice helps reduce the number
of desires and also provides time for the
fulfillment of each desire.
