NeuraLabel offers the NoTouch Roll to Roll system (NoTouch R2R) that works seamlessly
with the 300x. The NoTouch uses gesture sensors to monitor the media for both unwinding
and rewinding and includes a positioning base plate with sliding guides. The NoTouch works
with all media widths that the 300x will take, 1.5 inches to 8.5 inches. It uses a 3” standard
core and accepts rolls up 8.5 inches in diameter.
For very large media rolls, NeuraLabel offers the Ultra Unwinder/Rewinder system. This
system uses dancer arms and works with media from 6” to 8.5” wide. It supports rolls on 3-
inch cores up to 12 inches in diameter. This system is ideal for larger/wider labels, web
press, and longer print jobs.
All NeuraLabel 300x Standard configurations use the lower left side of the printer for media
input. This is called Tray 1 Continuous printing. There are gray media guides that are
adjusted to fit the media. The media is loaded face down. All NeuraLabel 300x Standard
configuration use the upper right side of the printer for media exit. The media exits the printer
face down.
Because the straight through media path puts only minimum restraints on the media in the
NeuraLabel 300x ST, there must be no external drag on the media, and it must be allowed to
freely flow through the printer. Fanfold media should be placed no lower than a few inches
below the printer input and output so that the weight of the media does not place drag on the
system. Feeding media from the floor or from a box is not recommended because it may
place drag on the system and result in print defects.
labels where the chance of label pre-dispension is greater. Larger synthetic labels, such as
drum labels, will usually not require the NeuraLabel 300x ST, however it is available as an
option for all types of die-cut label printing. NeuraLabel 300x ST can be used for printing on
unconverted media rolls where labels will be cut in a finishing process, however in this case
300x Standard would work as well.
The NeuraLabel 300x ST configuration uses the right side of the printer for media input. This
is called Tray 2 Continuous printing. There are black media guides that are adjusted to fit the
media. The media is loaded face up. The NeuraLabel 300x ST configuration uses the mid-
lower left side of the printer for media exit. The media exits the printer face up.
Ideally the NeuraLabel 300x ST will be used with an unwinder/rewinder system. The
NeuraLabel 300x Straight Through (ST) Unwinder/Rewinder uses weight sensitive “dancer
arms” for both the unwinder and rewinder and supports media from 3-8.5 inches wide. This
dancer arm system comes with a positioning base plate that integrates seamlessly with the
printer. Adjustment knobs move the unwinder and rewinder reels to match the position of the
media in the printer. Note that the 300x ST printer is capable of printing media as narrow as
1.5”; however this U/R system supports media down to 3”. The dancer arm may be too
heavy for some narrow medias smaller than 3” wide.
NeuraLabel 300x Standard may contact NeuraLabel Printing Solutions to upgrade to this
system if they fell it will better server their needs2.

The NeuraLabel 300x CP is recommended for any NoTouch users that are using media
which requires a “looser-release” media for a post label dispensing process. This unit may
be supplied as an upgrade for current NeuraLabel 300x NoTouch clients.
The NeuraLabel 300x CP configuration uses the right side of the printer for media input;
however, the media roll will be located on the left side of the printer as shown. The 300x CP
configuration uses Tray 2 Continuous printing. There are black media guides under the lid on
the right hand side that are adjusted to fit the media. The media is loaded face up. The
NeuraLabel 300x CP configuration uses the upper right side of the printer for media exit. The

not meet your needs, you may want to contact NeuraLabel to see about upgrading your printing system.
media exits face-down, however it wraps around the exit sensor to become face-up as it rolls
on the rewinding reel.
3 Requires Narrow Label Snap in for media less than 3 inches wide.
4 Small Labels may require running unit at slower speeds. This is related to drag on the media path.
55Both versions of the driver are identical, except that the NLST300xLabel.zip driver additionally includes
Continuous Printing from Tray 2, as used by the ST and CP printer configurations.

The printer is using incorrect link and duplex settings for the network.
• Keep at auto or 100 Mbps duplex.
6 We have found that switches frequently stop working and cables frequently break. Be sure to check these
things if your printer connection fails.
Alternatively, use the Embedded Web Server to view or change IP configuration settings.
• Type the printer IP address into the address line of a Web browser. Click the Settings
tab, click Security, and then click the Password Settings link.
• Type the new password in the Password box and in the Confirm Password box.
• At the bottom of the window, click the Apply button to save the password.
NOTE: If a password has previously been set, you are prompted to type the password. Type
“admin” for User Name along with the password, and then click the Apply button.
NOTE: The link speed and communication mode of the print server must match the network
hub. For most situations, leave the printer in automatic mode. Incorrect changes to the link
speed and duplex settings might prevent the printer from communicating with other network
devices. If you need to make changes, use the operator panel.
NOTE: The setting must match with the network product to which you are connecting (a
network hub, switch, gateway, router, or computer).
NOTE: Making changes to these settings causes the printer to turn off and then on. Make
changes only when the printer is idle.
The Default Jogging Tray can be updated in the printer Web Server in the Continuous Print
section. It can also be updated using NeuraLabel 300x Toolbox. Do not change this value
unless you are reconfiguring your system and you are instructed to do so by NeuraLabel
support.
The Default Media Exit can be updated in the printer Web Server in the Continuous Print
section. It can also be updated using NeuraLabel 300x Toolbox. Do not change this value
unless you are reconfiguring your system and you are instructed to do so by support.
This setting can and should be changed based on user preference. The Media Trailer
can be updated in the printer Web Server in the Continuous Print section. It can also be
updated using NeuraLabel 300x Toolbox.
7The 300x ST printer required the Lower Left exit to be closed during Printhead Cleaning Level 3. See 4.1.1
Printhead Cleaning on the 300x ST for details.
unwanted drag on the print. The excess drag may result in print defaults in continuous tray 2
printing. Remove paper from Drawer 2 for Continuous Tray 2 printing.
The NeuraLabel 300x makes printing labels fast and easy, regardless of the type of media
and label software you are using. Understanding the media, software application and printing
process will greatly expedite the label printing process.
The NeuraLabel 300x will work with any label authorizing software through its Windows
Printer Driver. This is true for all NeuraLabel 300x configurations. Make sure you understand
the software application you have chosen. Of particular importance are margin settings, color
selection and label sequencing. Neuralog can offer limited help with software setup. Contact
your label authoring software manufacturer for detailed help.
3.1.1 Margins
The NeuraLabel 300x has 35/300 (0.117) inch margins. While these margins imply that it is
not a full-bleed printer, with proper setup and label stock, full label coverage is possible. See
the section Types of Continuous Printing for information about full-bleed printing. Documents
should be sized to be within this space so that image cropping will not occur.
If Borderless Printing is selected in the driver, the image will print borderless in the
continuous direction and still keep 35/300 margin (white space) on the sides of the media.
Maximum Print Width is 8.5" - 0.117" left margin - 0.117" right margin = 8.266"
Minimum Print Width is 1.5" - 0.117" left margin - 0.117" right margin = 1.266"
Maximum Print Length is 39.0"8. Margins of 0.117" on each side are optional.
Minimum Print Length is 1.5". Margins of 0.117" on each side are optional.
Copies should be set in your label authoring application. Faster print performance can be
expected with copies than sequenced labels.
The file size will not affect the actual printing speed, however larger sized media may print at
slower speeds than smaller media.
8 Maximum Length for Normal Print mode is 39”. Maximum Length for Best Print mode is 22”. Note that single
prints up to 1000’ can be achieved with appropriate printer driver configurations.
9 Narrow Media Adapter Kit required for NeuraLabel 300x Standard
Note that custom form sizes should be set up before label printing. Because creating custom
form sizes is a system function, you must close completely out of the printer driver dialog for
custom form sizes to be saved.
TIP: If you create a custom label size and it does not appear in the Paper Size selection, you
may need to exit and restart the current application.
Creating a custom form size is simple. Be sure to click the Change Form Settings button.
Note that in the example shown a 3x4 inch label form has been created. Because of printer
margins a 2.77x3.77 inch label graphic will be printed within a 3x4 inch form area. If we want
the printable graphic to be larger, i.e., 3x4, we will create a larger form size. This topic will be
covered in detail in the upcoming sections.
Both English and Metric units are supported in the NeuraLabel driver.
Again, remember that Custom Form sizes should be set up before label printing. Because
creating custom form sizes is a system function, you must close completely out of the printer
driver dialog for custom form sizes to be saved.
Please see the NeuraLabel web site for a complete list of supported media types.
Media Width: The NeuraLabel 300x will support continuous media from 1.5 to 8.5 inches
wide. The printer's media width guides should be adjusted according to the media width. The
Narrow media snap in is required for media narrower than 3 inches for the NeuraLabel 300x
Standard. Depending on the selected roll to roll system, minimum media width may be
further restricted.
Media Length: Individual media page length for marked (die-cut) media may be from 1.5 to
39 inches long for Normal print mode and 1.5 to 22 inches long for Best print mode.
Unmarked media may be on a continuous roll of any length.
The smallest continuous marked media size that the NeuraLabel 300x will support is 1.5
inches wide by 1.5 inches long. The largest continuous marked media size that the
NeuraLabel 300x will support is 8.5 inches wide by 39 inches long. Media should be
measured "mark-to-mark" or "perf-to-perf". Note that on marked media the actual label is
smaller than the media.
It is critical that the proper page size be created and selected in the driver. The page size you
select in the driver must match the physical media page size to within 0.1 inches.
CAUTION: Sometimes label boxes are labeled incorrectly. They may be marked as length of
the label itself, rather than the full page size with backing.
For any new media you receive, we recommend measuring the exact length of the media
with a ruler. Tear off a single media page and measure the label end to end. Alternatively,
you can look at the back of the media and measure "mark-to-mark".
IMPORTANT: Continuous label media is placed on a web, and in the case of die-cut labels,
that the actual labels are smaller than the media size. You must be aware of the overall
dimensions of the label and release liner (backing material). You must set up your label
authoring application to print only on the labels and not on the release liner. Printers of any
type will have poor results if ink or toner is placed on the release liner.
For Continuous Tray 1 printing in the 300x Standard, push the media, mark side up, all the
way in until the leading edge touches the back wall of the printer opening, which should be
about 5 inches. Adjust the gray guides (with optional snap ins) to fit the width of the media.
For Continuous Tray 2 printing in the 300x ST or NeuraLabel 300x CP, open the Tray 2 cover
and push the media, mark side down, all the way in until the leading edge touches the back
of the printer Tray 2 opening, adjusting the internal black media guides to fit the width of the
media; make sure the media goes all the way in and under the hold-down bar at the back.
Slide the media guides in and out with your fingers to accommodate different widths of label
media from 3"- 8.5" wide.
Flatten out curled edges. The label or printable side should face down, and the non-printable
side face up. This example shows die-cut fanfold label media with black marks.
Load the media as shown with the marks up and going into the printer. The media must pass
between the two grey plastic guides. Adjust guides if needed to be snug but not tight.
It is important to insert the media straight and keep it flat as it passes through the printer
entrance and under the guides and pick wheels.
Keep pushing gently until you feel a bump where the media hits the back wall (about 5
inches). At this position the media is properly positioned to begin printing.
Once the media is loaded, you can begin printing immediately. You can optionally “jog” the
media through the printer in small increments by tapping the jog button or by holding the
button down to jog continuously. When the jog button light on the operator panel is lit, jogging
is enabled. 10
Press the jog button on the operator panel, either in brief increments or steadily. Note that the
media can only travel in a forward direction.
The NeuraLabel 300x roll-to-roll unit should position the media so that it is aligned with the
printer. Make sure the roll is aligned with the printer track, especially if the media is narrower
than 8.5 inches and the guides need to be adjusted.
Follow the same steps as the Fanfold Media, inserting the media straight and keeping it flat
as it passes through the printer entrance and under the guides and pick wheel.
You can start the print without jogging the media in and attach the printed media to the output
roll once the print has started, or you can jog the media into and through the printer until you
are able to wind it on the output roll.
Open the Tray 2 lid and position the media guides to fit the media width. Slide the guides in
and out with your fingers to accommodate different widths of label media from 1.5"- 8.5" wide.
Note that the servicing sled may be covering the Tray 2 entrance. If this is the case,
close the lid and wait until servicing is complete and the sled retracts.
Load the media as shown with the marks facing down (printable side up) and the leading
edge going into the printer. Flatten out any curled edges.
This example shows die-cut 3-inch Circle labels being loaded into the Tray 2 internal media
guide. The media must be snug but able to slide in between the two black guides.
It is important to insert media straight and keep it flat as it passes through the printer guides.
Feed the media all the way in to make the sure media slides under the holding bar at the
back of the Tray 2 internal guide entrance. You will feel the holding bar at the back of the
media guide; slide the media all the way under this holding bar. Close the lid when done.
NOTE: The media will slide into the printer Tray 2 opening and under the holding bar until it
touches the pick wheel. At this position the media is properly positioned to begin printing.
Once the media is loaded and lid is closed, you can begin printing immediately. You can
optionally “jog” the media through the printer in small increments by tapping the jog button or
holding the button down to jog continuously. When the jog button light on the operator panel
is lit, jogging is enabled.
Press the jog button on the operator panel, either in brief increments or steadily. Note that the
media can only travel in a forward direction.
NOTE: Media cannot be jogged or printed in Continuous Tray 2 unless the printer lid is
closed.
STEP 1. Open the lid and position media in the Tray 2 guides as described in the previous
steps. If the roll system has a dancer arm, be sure to thread the media under the unwinder
dancer arm. The NeuraLabel 300x roll units should be positioned so that the media is
aligned with the printer.
Follow the same steps as discussed, inserting the media straight and keeping it flat as it
passes through the printer entrance and into the guides and pick wheel. Make sure the
leading edge of the media does not curl out of the track. Close the lid once the media is
properly inserted.
You can either start the print without jogging the media in and attach the printed media to the
output roll once the print has started, or you can jog the media into and through the printer
until you are able to wind it on the output roll. The media can also be webbed up on the fly
once printing begins. Be sure to select “initial slow print” in the printer driver if webbing on
the fly to give you ample time to attach the media to the core.
TIP: For troublesome curled media, cut the end at a slight angle. This can make it easier to
guide the leading edge through the track and into the printer.
exit sensor and moves to the left on to the NoTouch rewinder. The media is face up as it
attaches to the rewinder roll, which is convenient for inspections.
Steps for loading the 300x Standard with NoTouch Roll System
• Place media on Unwinder (lower roll) so that media unrolls face down.
• Guide the media into the Continuous Tray 1 media guide. Slide the media guides into
place to create the appropriate track width.
• If the media is less than 3 inches wide, be sure to use the narrow media snapin kit with
the printer.
• Push the media all the way into the Tray 1 guides, until it hits the back of the guide.
• Optionally tap the jog button to allow the printer to “grab” the media to keep it in place.
• Optionally jog the media through the printer and tape the end onto a receiving core on
the unwinder.
• The media can also be webbed up on the fly once printing begins. Be sure to use the
“initial slow print” option if webbing on-the-fly.
IMPORTANT: The roll system must be well aligned with the printer for proper printing. Be
sure to adjust all unwinder, rewinder and printer guides before printing.
Steps for loading the 300x Standard with Ultra Roll System
• Place media on Unwinder so that media unrolls face down. Feed the media under the
dancer arm.
• Guide the media into the Continuous Tray 1 media guide. Slide the media guides into
place to create the appropriate track width. Make sure the media is slid all the way in
through the guides.
• Optionally tap the jog button to allow the printer to “grab” the media to keep it in place.
• Optionally jog the media through the printer and feed through the Ultra unwinder
rollers.
• Tape the end onto a receiving core on the unwinder, making sure it is properly fed
through the dancer arm system.
• The media can also be webbed up on the fly once printing begins. Be sure to select
“initial slow print” in the printer driver if webbing on the fly to give you ample time to
attach the media to the core.
• Set up the Straight Through Roll System as directed in the setup guide. Plug in both
the unwinder and rewinder. It is recommended to leave both the unwinder and
rewinder powered OFF during media loading.
• Place media on the Unwinder so that media unrolls face up. Feed the media under
the Unwinder dancer arm. Make sure the core is snug and both unwinder wheels are
in place.
• Open the Tray 2 Lid and feed the media into the Tray 2 internal media guide. Slide the
media guides into place to create the appropriate track width.
• Slide the media all the way in until it tucks under the holding bar at the end of the
track. Slide it forward as far as it will readily go. Allow for extra slack in the system so
the media stays in place.
• Adjust the unwinder by turning the positioning knob until it is aligned with the media in
the printer. Do not lock into place yet; for precision printing, further adjustments will
likely be needed.
• Once the media is in position, close the Tray 2 lid.
Closed Lid
Dancer Arm
• RECOMMENDED: Optionally jog the media through the printer and feed under the
dancer arm of the ST Rewinder. Note that the rewinder arm can be locked into the
upper position during media loading. The Rewinder could be webbed on the fly,
however this is only advisable once the system is already well aligned. When
changing label media, the system must be manually aligned for precision printing.
• Position the rubber “star wheels” on the arm so that they are in the media path. Allow
for one star wheel about every 1-2 inches11. The star wheels will protect the media
from any excess ink from overspray.
• Tape the media end onto a receiving core on the rewinder, making sure it is under the
dancer arm. Lower the dancer arm during printing. Make sure the core is snug and
both rewinder wheels are in place.
• Adjust the rewinder by turning the positioning knob until it is aligned with the media in
the printer. Lock into place only when alignment is complete.
Power Switch
Locking Knob
Positioning Knob
• Make sure the unwinder and rewinder are plugged in and powered on before printing.
• RECOMMENDED: Optionally jog the media through the printer to check the complete
system alignment. If the media pulls to one side, adjust the Unwinder and Rewinder
positioning knob as needed.
• RECOMMENDED: Optionally print a small number of labels to check the alignment.
Adjust the Unwinder and Rewinder as needed. Note that there are also procedures to
internally adjust the placement of the label image. See the Image Registration section.
• Alternatively, rather than jogging the media through the printer before printing, the
media can be webbed on the fly once printing begins. Be sure to select “initial slow
print” in the printer driver if webbing on the fly to give you ample time to attach the
media to the core. Only use this option if your system is already aligned.
11 The unit ships with four attached star wheels. Use as many as is needed.
• Once the system alignment is satisfactory, lock the unwinder and rewinder position
into place using each unit’s locking knob.
TIP: Jogging the media after the unwinder and rewinder are webbed and initially aligned will
help with fine alignment of the system. If unaligned, you will see the media pull to one side.
IMPORTANT: This printer is designed to be used on a level surface. Operating the printer
when not level could result in inaccurate printer messaging about the amount of ink remaining
in cartridges as well as inaccurate print placement.
The media exits at the top right side of the printer face down where it wraps around the exit
sensor and moves to the left on to the NoTouch rewinder, in the same path as the 300x
Standard with NoTouch. The media is face up as it attaches to the rewinder roll.
• Place the media on the NoTouch Unwinder (lower roll) so that media unrolls face down.
• Slide the 300x printer on the rails to the far-right position to move it out of the way.
• Unroll the media to the full length of the baseplate. It is convenient to temporarily tape
the end of the media in place.
• Slide the printer back into place and pull the media out from underneath the printer,
giving it some excess slack. Wrap the media around the C-guide to be face up.
• Open the Tray 2 Lid and feed the media into the Tray 2 internal media guide. Slide the
media guides into place to create the appropriate track width.
Figure 3-25 Loading Media around the C-Guide into the Internal Media Guides
Figure 3-26 Loading Media all the way into the printer
• Slide the media all the way in until it tucks under the holding bar at the end of the
track. Slide it forward as far as it will readily go.
• Once the media is in position, close the Tray 2 lid. The printer will not print or jog
media with the lid open.
• RECOMMENDED: Optionally jog the media through the printer and tape the end onto
a receiving core on the unwinder (top roll of the NoTouch). The media can also be
webbed up on the fly once printing begins; however, this should only be done if the
system has already been aligned. Be sure to select “initial slow print” in the printer
driver if webbing on the fly to give you ample time to attach the media to the core.
• Tape the media onto the NoTouch Rewinder (upper spindle). Make sure the rewinder
is positioned correctly.
• RECOMMENDED: Optionally jog the media through the system to verify alignment. If
the media pulls to one side at either the unwinder or rewinder, adjust the positioning of
the flanges.
• RECOMMENDED: Optionally print a small number of labels to check the alignment.
Adjust the Unwinder and Rewinder as needed. Note that there are also procedures to
internally adjust the placement of the label image. See the Image Registration section.
• Once the media is aligned make sure to tighten the spindles and lock the flanges into
place. Failure to do this step may cause the media to drift.
When fully webbed the 300x CP with NoTouch will appear similar to the picture above. The
NoTouch user guide provides detailed instructions on how to load and operate the NoTouch
system. Proper alignment is critical for precision printing.
The NoTouch Roll System requires the rewinder sensor to be calibrated. Sensor calibration
controls the open and closed values of the sensor, which in turn controls the rewinder speed.
If the sensor is not calibrated, the rewinder might tug on the media and cause MARK EARLY
errors during printing. If you suspect that the sensor needs calibrating, contact NeuraLabel
support. There is a simple calibration routine that can be performed on your unit.
Steps for using the NeuraLabel 300x with the Passive Unwinder
• Place the media on the Passive Unwinder so that media unrolls face down for 300x
Standard or face up for 300x ST.
• Load the printer as instructed in the appropriate section above.
• As you print, MANUALLY unroll the roll on the passive unwinder. The Passive Unwinders
purpose is to hold the roll. The printer operator must unwind it to feed it into the printer.
• Slow the print speed down (via the printer driver) if needed.
NOTE: The NeuraLabel 300x, and especially the NeuraLabel 300x ST, must have no
external drag on the media feed; otherwise print defects might occur.
Media may be left in the printer, either loaded into the tray or left in the body of the printer.
However, because the printer needs to perform self maintenance, it will periodically discharge
ink to keep the ink heads lubricated, and it must jog the media during this procedure.
Therefore it is advisable, although not required, to remove media from the printer when not in
use so that media is not wasted.
The 300x also supports duplex cut sheet printing from its Tray 2 drawer. For cut sheet
printing from Tray 2 (the drawer), you must remove the continuous media from the printer
because continuous media in the printer blocks the paper path for cut sheets. Cut sheet
printing is required for printer status reports and cleaning routines.
Media can be removed from the printer using the jog button. All printer doors must be closed
before jogging the media.
than the defined page size by about 1 inch. The user must clear the jam by pressing OK and
make sure the correct page size is chosen12.
In the MARK EARLY/LATE case EITHER the wrong media was loaded OR the wrong page
size was selected for the media. Check both the page size and the media.
If this was the media you wanted to use, then create/select a custom form size that exactly
matches your measured media size. If necessary, measure the media with a ruler.
If this was not the correct media, find the correct media and load it into the printer.
External drag can occur in any 300x configurations, but the straight through and C-path
printers are most susceptible. Check the following cases of external drag.
- Roll system not turned on, not aligned or not configured correctly.
- Printer guides too tight (although the guides should be snug).
- If no roll system, media pulled from box that is constraining it. (Remove plastic;
remove box flaps.)
- If no roll system, media pulled from floor and weight of media is causing too much
drag. (Move to table or higher position.)
- For Continuous Tray 2, paper in the drawer causes drag on the continuous media.
- Print speed is too fast. If the printing system appears to be set up correctly and mark
errors still occur, slow the printing speed down. A slower printing speed almost always
resolves mark issues once any obvious drag source has been removed. Unless a
high production rate is critical, we recommend printing in BEST mode on the 300x ST
and 300x CP13. BEST mode prints at about 5 inches per second, eliminating difficult
drag scenarios. And while NORMAL mode produces great images, BEST mode
produces the best possible images at a higher print quality.
- NoTouch Roll System rewinder sensor is not calibrated. The rewinder sensor on the
NoTouch Roll system requires calibrating so that it correctly controls the speed of the
rewinder. An uncalibrated sensor may cause the rewinder to jerk the media and result
in a MARK EARLY error. Contact NeuraLabel support if you suspect your sensor
needs to be calibrated.
Print zone jam. Press ? for guide, OK to continue. Code = 0x0e3e2927 or similar.
Clear the printer jam and cut and eject the media. Remove the damaged portion of the media
and make sure that any media going into the printer is not crumpled or crooked. For more
information on printer jams, see the section Clearing Jams.
If you are using synthetic labels that do not tear inside the printer, it is likely that you will be
able to remove a stuck label yourself. Opening the Tray 2 drawer usually provides access to
the stuck label. Tweezers or needle nose plyers can often pull the label out. Paper labels
are usually not readily removable, however, because they will tear and leave fragments
inside the printer. The NeuraLabel support team knows how to remove stuck labels from the
printer. Contact support for help.
If you are successful in removing the stuck label, you will need to run a printhead recover
and/or cleaning to help flush label glue from the system. You can contact support for
assistance in getting the printer back up and running as quickly as possible. Because the
300x ST and 300x CP have recently become available, you may want to contact NeuraLabel
about upgrading to one of these newer models.
IMPORTANT: Do not place an empty cartridge back in the printer. The printer will still have
ink in the ink tubes and the cartridge may not immediately register as empty. This may lead to
air in the tubes that can shorten the life of the printer.
IMPORTANT: Only NeuraLabel ink can be used in the 300x printer. Other ink cartridges
may “fit” in the printer, but only NeuraLabel ink purchased from NeuraLabel or an authorized
agent will properly work and keep the printer warranty in place.
The NeuraLabel 300x printer will need maintenance from time to time. The most
common routine is Printhead Cleaning, which flushes ink through the printhead. There
are three levels of printhead cleaning. Levels 1 and 2 perform basic ink flushing, while
Level 3 adds die alignment and leveling, that is Level 3 runs routines that checks for
and adjusts consistency among the 10 printer dies that make up the print head. In
addition to Printhead Cleaning, there is a Printhead Recover routine that flushes out the
ink system and is extremely useful when more robust maintenance is needed. The
following sections discuss how to run printhead cleaning and printhead recover.
- Run Printhead Cleaning Level 1 with the exit door off. A quality report page will
be printed and will exit the door, in the same place as the continuous media exit.
- Run Printhead Cleaning Level 2 with the exit door off. A quality report page will
be printed and will exit the door, in the same place as the continuous media exit.
- Before running Printhead Cleaning Level 3, attach the exit door cover. You will
need to open the printer door to attach the cover. See the steps below. Once
the cover is attached, close the printer door and run Printhead Cleaning Level 3.
The following steps show how to cover the exit to ready the printer for Printhead
Cleaning Level 3. The exit cover is stowed near the Tray 2 lid ad shown.
1. Remove the cover from the stored location as shown. There is a small storage
clip attached to the printer that keeps the cover in place.
2. Open the large printer door.
3. Align the cover with the door opening.
4. Slide the cover into position using the built-in positioning guides.
5. Snap the exit cover into place so that the thumb screw slots are aligned with the
thumb screws. Make sure it is completely pressed into position.
6. Tighten the thumb screws from the outside of the door. Make sure the door
cover is completely closed.
When the cover is in place close the printer door and check that the two thumb screws
are snug.
1. Unscrew the two thumb screws to loosen the cover. The thumb screws are
attached and should not fall out.
2. Open the large printer door.
3. From the outside of the door, press in the middle to remove the cover.
4. Close the large printer door.
5. Store the cover in the storage location. There is a small storage clip that keeps
the cover in place.
IMPORTANT: The only time the exit door needs to be covered is during Printhead
Level Cleaning 3. This is because the internal quality control scanner (used by this
routine) is near this location. The exit door cover is removed for all 300x ST
continuous printing and other maintenance routines.
• The printer has not been used for a few weeks. (The nozzles may be dry.)
• The printer was recently moved or experienced a large temperature shift.
• There was a recent media jam in the printer. (Nozzles may be clogged with label
glue.)
• Color mixing is appearing and is not resolved by printhead cleaning.
• The print quality problem seems to be getting better as the printer is used
(especially if prints with dense backgrounds are printed), but the print quality is
still not satisfactory.
➢ From the Home menu, touch the key sequence Back X Back Back.
➢ Select 1. Support Menu
➢ Scroll down 5 times sto the Printhead Diagnostic Menu. This is right after the
Print Diganostic Menu, and select OK.
➢ Scroll down to Printhead Recover and select OK. The routine will start. It may take
a couple of minutes to complete.
NeuraLabel 300x Toolbox Software and User Guide are available to download from the
NeuraLabel website. The program runs on your Windows PC. 300x Toolbox is
commonly used to fine tune print quality issues after running automatic cleaning
routines.
The NeuraLabel 300x has a variety of options accessed through the printer driver. These
options allow you to set parameters such as label size, print quality and print speed. All
printer driver options are explained in this chapter.
Also on the Layout tab is an option to print duplex: "Print on Both Sides." This option is not
useful for printing labels, which have only one printable side. Use this option if you need to
print on cut sheet paper or other dual sided media from Tray 2, the cut sheet tray. This option
is not available for Continuous printing.
The default Paper Source is Tray 1 Continuous Form. The NeuraLabel 300x ST version of
the printer driver also includes the Paper Source Tray 2 Continuous Form. Tray 1 and Tray
2 cut sheet are also available choices in the driver.
Tray 1 printing allows for continuous or cut sheet media to be fed to the left entrance of the
printer. Tray 2 printing allows for printing by opening the lid and using the Tray 2 internal
guides or by placing cut sheets in the printer drawer. The Tray 2 drawer can support up to
Letter or A4 size. Tray 1 can also be used for cut sheets; only 1 sheet of media at a time
should be loaded.
The default width for Tray 1 Continuous Form is 8.5 inches. The smallest width is 3 inches,
or 1.5 inches using a special narrow media snap in. The media guides can be adjusted to fit
the width of your media so that the best possible prints can be achieved.
Cut sheets up to 17 inches can also be fed into Tray 1. Choose Tray 1 Cut Sheet for this
functionality. This would be useful for printing cut sheet labels longer than letter or A4 size.
Media placed in Tray 1 should be face down. Cut sheet printing does not look for a media
mark on the back of the page.
Tray 2 Cut Sheet should be selected for Letter, A4 or smaller cut sheets. Tray 2 Cut Sheet
is the printer drawer. Note that Tray 2 supports duplex printing. For duplex printing on the
300x ST, be sure the exit door cover has been attached.
Tray 2 Continuous Form is available on the NeuraLabel 300x ST and 300x CP only. Its
media guides can be adjusted from 1.5” to 8.5”. Open the Tray 2 continuous lid to adjust the
guides and place the media. The lid must be closed for the media to be fed through the
printer.
5.2.2 Media
Because the NeuraLabel 300x has been designed to be a label printer, several predefined
settings are available to achieve the best label print results, depending on the type of media
you will use. The default Media is Plain Paper. Normally you will select the media type that
most closely matches your media. However sometimes a different type is the best choice for
that particular media.
Understanding your media is critical for quality printing. NeuraLabel Printing Solutions works
with multiple media vendors to provide specialty media for use with the 300x. The media type
choice will work the same whether you are printing cut sheet or continuous form.
The seven media type choices available in the driver are shown below.
• Plain Paper
• Synthetic Labels
• Matte Labels
• Glossy Labels
• Photo Inkjet Papers
• Matte Inkjet Papers
• Glossy Inkjet Papers
The following table provides details about each media choice. Note that some of the media
choices are equivalent, in affect make there only 4 unique driver settings. Note that Glossy
Labels and Photo Inkjet Papers setting use Composite Colors to create grays.
Draft: Use when quality is not as important. Less ink is used in this mode. This is not a
common printing mode for labels.
Normal: Use for most printing. However, if slower speeds are needed, use Best mode.
Best: Use when quality is very important. More ink is used and slower print speeds will be
noticed in this mode. See the section Max Print Speed for more information.
The table below provides a more technical description of the way the NeuraLabel driver
works. The exact algorithms used are proprietary.
Quality Description
Normal/Draft Driver creates a 300x300 dpi RGB image. Printer halftones to a 600x600
(excellent ppi CMYK image. The output grid is 1200x1200 ppi and a subset of
quality) these locations receive drops with methods that optimize print quality.
Best Driver creates a 600x600 dpi RGB image. Printer halftones to a
(superior 1200x1200 ppi CMYK image. The output grid is 1200x1200 ppi (or
quality) higher) and a subset of these locations receive drops with methods that
optimize print quality.
IMPORTANT: At times you may need to slow the printer to a slower speed to get the best
results from the complete printing system, especially if a roll system is being used. If you
need to significantly slow down the print speed, we suggest using Best mode, which prints at
5 inches/second. Alternatively, a slower maximum print speed can be selected in the driver.
5.2.4 Color
The NeuraLabel 300x Printer may be set to Black & White or Color mode. If Black & White
mode is selected, only black ink will be used. A high quality grayscale in which all colors are
mixed is also available. For further information see section Print in Grayscale.
NOTE: Paper Size and Page Size are both synonymous with Form Size. The 300x printer
driver uses the term Paper Size. The Windows System uses the term Form.
Page (Paper) size may be defined from 1.5 inches to 8.5 inches wide and 1.5 inches to 39
inches long. The smallest page size that can be defined is 1.5 inches x 1.5 inches. The
largest page size that can be defined is 8.5 inches x 39 inches.
Note that for media less than 3 inches wide, a Narrow media adapter must be used with the
300x Standard. The 300x ST and 300x CP have internal media guides that can be slid to the
1.5 inch width position. Also the longest supported label size for BEST mode printing is 22”
long. If using a page longer than this, you must use only NORMAL mode printing. This
limitation is related to the amount of data that needs to be transferred to the printer.
EXAMPLE: If the continuous media you are using measures 8.0 inches long and 8.0 inches
wide, create and select that size (8”x8”) from the driver.
design software is used to configure "multi-up" labels. In either case remember that 0.117
inch margins will be added to the non-continuous edges and for printing on unconverted
media, the Use Marks setting will be changed to No Marks.
5.3.2.1Print in Grayscale
The Print in Grayscale driver setting is found in the Advanced Options Dialog of the
NeuraLabel Printer Driver.
Print in Grayscale is normally Off for label printing. However, if grayscale labels are desired,
the user may choose between High Quality Grayscale, which mixes colors to produce
shades of gray, or Black Ink Only may be selected to produce the grayscale images.
Printing in Max DPI can increase the quality of the print, however it is not advised or
available for all media types. Print in Max DPI is only available for Photo Inkjet Papers and
Glossy Labels, because only these papers are designed to properly handle the increased
amount of ink. It can be used with Draft, Normal or Best modes. It can also be used to
increase image accuracy with the selected ink level mode.
Many types of label media will have a higher quality appearance with less ink and lower DPI
settings. Print in Max DPI setting of No is recommended for most label printing.
5.3.2.3Image Enhancement
The Image Enhancement driver setting is found in the Advanced Options Dialog of the
NeuraLabel Printer Driver.
Image Enhancements is Off by default. It may be useful for printing labels that include
photographs. Image Enhancement is known to provide excellent skin tone colors and true-to-
life landscape colors through automated photo brightening, adaptive lighting, and image
sharpness and smoothness control.
The following sections contain the important driver settings for continuous printing.
5.3.2.4Borderless Printing
The Borderless Printing driver setting is found in the Advanced Options Dialog of the
NeuraLabel Printer Driver.
Borderless Printing has values of ON and OFF. This section will describe the types of
bordered and borderless printing.
If your media does not have marks, you can use borderless printing. Borderless label printing
is not used with marked media.
Borderless label printing should only be used on unmarked media using the "No Marks"
setting. For printing continuous label media with marks, such as die-cut label media, set
Borderless Printing to Off. (Remember a borderless look can still be achieved if the
appropriate media and settings are used.
Normally, Borderless printing means a repeated pattern (i.e. copies). However, numbered
labels may also be printed borderless.
Hint: To effectively create full-bleed in the non-continuous direction for labels less than 8.5
inches wide, define the page to be slightly wider than the media.
1. The label copies need to be stitched together to form a seamless document. Borderless
Copies: Enhanced Precision is used. The copies will be stitched together. Performance
may be reduced for this setting. (It might take longer to print.)
2. The individual labels need to be full-bleed, but they can have a gap between them.
Borderless Copies: Normal is used. There may be a small gap (<0.2") between the
labels. The exact size of the gap is dependent upon label size.
A A A A
Select Borderless ON and No Marks. The printed page will be "full-bleed" in the continuous
direction. Normal margins are applied to the non-continuous side of the label. The labels will
be butted up against one another. The resulting print will appear to be one seamless
continuous image.
A A A A
5.3.2.4.7 Bordered Pages (not copies)
Bordered pages can be made on marked or unmarked media with Borderless printing set to
OFF. The pages will be evenly spaced using the exact label size.
A1 A 2 A 3 A 4
If using marked media, make sure the perf-to-perf measurement of the label media exactly
matches the defined label page size. This is a common way to print labels using the 300x,
when the labels are numbered.
Note that the Mark Adjust setting can be used to center the label on the page in the
continuous direction.
5.3.2.5Borderless Copies
The Borderless Copies driver setting is found in the Advanced Options Dialog of the
NeuraLabel Printer Driver. There are two configurations. More information on types of
borderless printing can be found in the previous section.
Normal setting prints the copies at the fastest possible speed. A gap may appear between
label copies because each label copy may be placed on a slightly larger "even" page
boundary. However each label itself is printed full-bleed or borderless.
Enhanced Precision prints the copies butted up against one another, creating a completely
seamless print. The individual labels are full-bleed or borderless. However, print speed may
be slower.
NOTE: Borderless Copies can only be printed using the "No Marks" setting, i.e., on
unconverted media as a web press.
The NeuraLabel 300x will operate at print speeds from 2 inches per second to 20 inches per
second. Max Print Speed is the fastest possible speed of the printer. However, it is likely that
the printer will print more slowly than its maximum speed due to several factors.
Quality setting affects print speed. The higher the quality, the slower the printer must print.
Media width may affect print speed. Narrower media may print at higher speeds. Media
length may affect print speed. See the table below.
The NeuraLabel 300x has built-in algorithms to regulate the print speed for the selected
settings. This will produce the best possible quality prints. However, in some circumstances,
the user may need to manually lower the print speed. For example, a new type of media
might have poor ink absorption or folding properties, in which lowering the print speed may
produce better results. Any special case label where the printer cannot keep up with the data
should be printed with reduced print speeds.
The following are signs that lowering the maximum print speed will be helpful:
• The media does not seem to allow the ink to completely dry.
• The media is not folding and needs to be folded manually.
• Quality control needs to be done on the media as it is printing.
• The printer speed control algorithm is continuously changing speed.
• The printer gets a data underrun error because it is printing faster than the host PC
can provide data.
• The printer declares a Mark Late or Mark Early error due to external drag, usually
from the Roll System.
5.3.2.7Ink Saver
The Ink Saver driver setting is found in the Advanced Options Dialog of the NeuraLabel
Printer Driver.
Ink Saver is a valuable feature for maximizing the affordability of your NeuraLabel 300x
continuous form printer. Often full ink volume is not needed for printing labels, even high
quality labels. In fact, some media will provide better quality results if less ink is used.
NeuraLabel 300x offers the following ink saver modes:
• Off - Default value. The normal amount of ink will be used to create the print, based on
other printer settings.
• Low - Slightly less (about 12.5%) ink will be used to create the print, after other settings
have been applied. This should hardly be noticeable in the print.
• High - Significantly less (about 25%) ink will be used to create the print, after other
settings have been applied. This should be noticeable, but not dramatic. It may be more
noticeable in red colors.
It is recommended that you experiment with Ink Saver mode to find the best setting for your
specific needs. For example, some medias do not absorb the ink as well as others and may
produce a better printed result with Ink Saver activated. Ink Saver mode works with any other
print quality settings.
5.3.2.8Print Hold
The Print Hold driver setting is found in the Advanced Options Dialog of the NeuraLabel
Printer Driver. Print Hold is a feature that will cause the printer to hold (not print) the job until
the user presses a release button on the operator panel. This is a useful feature if one needs
to verify the printer setup before the job is released.
Print Hold is available for Tray 1 Continuous Printing. It is not available for Tray 2
Continuous Printing.
5.3.2.9Use Marks
The Use Marks driver setting is found in the Advanced Options Dialog of the NeuraLabel
Printer Driver.
Use Marks allows the printer to print on continuous marked media, media where each page
has a mark to identify the top of form. This type of media has marks which allow the printer to
begin printing each label at the correct location on the media. Marked media is usually die-
cut and is often perforated. It may be fanfold or placed on a roll.
Marks Only - The printer begins printing when a mark is detected. Marked media will almost
always be printed using this setting.
No Marks - The printer does not recognize marks. Even if marks appear on the media, the
printer does not use them, but begins printing on the media immediately. This would be the
setting selected if the printer were to be used as a web press.
Mixed - The printer begins printing on the media immediately, however it begins to synch on
the marked page as soon as marks are detected.
If your media has marks to distinguish the pages, use the Marks Only setting. Make sure
the page size you select exactly matches the physical media page size.
If your media does not have marks, use the No Marks setting.
NOTE: If your media has perforated or separate die cut label pages, but does not have
marks, you cannot expect reliable results. Contact Neuralog for help obtaining the correct
media for use with the 300x printer.
Rotate 180 will simply rotate each individual page as it is printed. This setting is available for
use with the Borderless Printing setting at OFF. Rotation of borderless labels is not
supported.
Rotate 180 is often needed to orient labels correctly for use with applicators.
Print Head Adjust affects the distance between the print head and the media. Because
label media is normally thicker than plain paper, the print head may best be positioned
farther away from the media. The value of Auto will automatically detect the best position for
the print head, given the selected Media Type.
Low - Gives the best image quality but has the highest smear risk. Use only on very flat, thin
media.
Auto - Selects a printhead height depending on Media selection in the Paper/Quality tab.
The following table summarizes the Auto Printhead Setting, based on selected media type.
The following table lists the printhead distance in mm. Thick media should use the high
setting.
Printhead Height
Setting
Low 1.3mm
Medium 1.6mm
High 3.5mm
This table gives some perspective of thickness so you can understand the print head setting.
Item Thickness
Quarter 1.75mm
Penny 1.52mm
Envelope about .75mm
14 pt cardstock .36 mm
12 pt cardstock .30mm
Label Media about .12mm
Coated Inkjet Paper .12 - .25mm
Copy paper - 20 lb 0.1mm
Leading Blank Pages allows you to add blank pages into the beginning of the job. You may
add 0 to 20 leading blank pages at the beginning of the print job.
Rolled Media/Web Press - If you are placing the printed media on a roll, you may wish to
use a leading blank page or two to attach the media to the rewinder device. Shorter media
may need a larger number of blank pages to achieve the same result.
Job Separation - You may choose to include one or more blank media pages in between
print jobs to separate them.
Note that the printer will automatically place an additional page before or after each job for
excess ink. You may see an ink pattern similar to the one shown below. This is necessary to
keep the ink heads in working order.
Trailing Blank Pages allows you to add blank pages into the end of the job. You may add 0
to 20 trailing blank form pages to the end of the print job.
Rolled Media/Web Press - If you are placing the printed media on a rewinder, you may wish
to use a trailing blank page or two so that the outer printed labels are protected. Shorter
media may need a larger number of blank pages to achieve the same result.
Job Separation - You may choose to include one or more blank media pages in between
print jobs to separate them.
Ending Job Outside Printer - Adding one or two trailing blank pages will allow your print job
to be completely out of the printer at the end of the print for NeuraLabel 300x Standard. This
is more convenient for tearing off a completed print job. (With no trailing pages, the end of
the job will remain inside the printer at the end of the print. This saves label media.)
Note that the printer automatically places a single additional page before or after each job for
excess ink. You may see an ink pattern similar to the one shown previously. This is
necessary to keep the ink heads in good working order.
Initial Slow Print is useful when you need to handle the printed media as it exits the printer,
such as attaching the printed labels to a rewinder. The slow print speed is fixed; the time for
slow print may be set to 0, 5,10, 20, or 30 seconds. Note that this is a minimum time and the
printer had been programmed to print slowly for at least this time. Initial Slow Print may be
used with or without Leading Blank Pages. It does not affect the outcome of the final print;
only the initial sprint speed. The speed of slow print is fixed at 3 inches per second.
Raster Compression has values of Maximum Compression and Best Quality. The default
value of Maximum Compression is recommended for most continuous label printing.
Maximum Compression adds a special "Lossy" encoding which makes certain elements
such as photographs much smaller in the print file. Always use this setting when printing
photographs over continuous printing. This higher compression will enable the printer to
process more data and print at faster speeds.
Best Quality skips the Lossy compression and will execute faster on the PC. It should only
be needed/used in the following cases:
If you are printing text with solid colors (business graphics) and you want to optimize PC
performance (the time it takes to generate the file; not the time it takes to print the file.)
Best Quality should not be used for high resolution photo-like content because the file size
can grow significantly in those cases.
Mark Adjust is used to refine the placement of the label image with respect to the label form.
It is applicable when Marks Only is selected for Use Marks. It has no affect when Use
Marks is set to No Marks as is the case with a Web Press.
NeuraLabel 300x continuous media has a mark on the back of each continuous label page.
This allows the printer to monitor the media and determine the label size. Mark Adjust is
used to adjust the label placement with respect to the mark.
Mark Adjust may have any value from -300 to 300. The default value is 20. This value
corresponds to “GHS-like labels” that have the mark slightly down on the media page. Note
that for media with the mark in the gap between the labels, a value of about -14 is used.
If you find that the printed label is not centered on the page in the continuous direction, use
Mark Adjust. The marked end of the continuous media is the top of the page.
To move the printed image down the page, decrease the value of Mark Adjust.
To move the printed image up the page, increase the value of Mark Adjust.
10 units of Mark Adjust is about 1/10 inch. 100 units is one inch.
It is likely that this value will not need to be changed for standard media with the mark slightly
down on the backing or that it would only need to be changed by a small amount. It will need
to be changed for media where the mark is placed in the gap.
The media does not meet the NeuraLabel 300x media specifications.
The user wants to change the position of the label on the continuous form. Small
discrepancies in the printer may require a small adjustment.
NOTE: Mark Adjust can be set by printing a single label and adjusting the value based on
the resulting label image placement. However for super fine tuning of Mark Adjustment, look
at the second and third labels of a print job.
Leading Edge Adjust is used to refine the placement of the label image with respect to the
label form on the leading edge (first page) of the media. It does not affect any other page.
Leading Edge Adjust only affects a label that has been loaded into the Tray 1 opening of
the printer. If there is already continuous label media fed through the printer, Leading Edge
Adjust has no affect.
Leading Edge Adjust may have any value from -12 to 12. The default value is 0. It is
possible that this value will not need to be changed.
If you find that the leading (page 1) printed label is not centered on the page in the
continuous direction, adjust Leading Edge Adjust.
To move the printed image down the page, decrease the value of Leading Edge Adjust.
To move the printed image up the page, increase the value of Leading Edge Adjust.
It is likely that this value will not need to be changed or that it would only need to be changed
by a small amount.
The user wants to change the position of the leading label on the continuous form. Small
discrepancies in the printer may require a small adjustment.
Manage Custom Sizes allows you to create custom form sizes for label printing.
There are many pre-defined form sizes, however you may need to create and define custom
form sizes. Custom form sizes may be accessed through your printer server properties
through the control panel. You may also access custom forms through the NeuraLabel 300x
printer driver. To access through the printer driver, select Advanced... and then Manage
Custom Sizes. Manage Custom Sizes is the last item in the Advanced Options Printer
Features list.
Custom Form Sizes should be set up before label printing. Creating custom form sizes is a
system function, and you must close completely out of the printer driver dialog for custom
form sizes to be saved.
In the following example a 3.00” x 4.00” form is defined. Because of the printer margins, the
actual size of the printed graphic will be 2.77” x 3.77”.
NOTE: If you need to printed graphic to be 3”x4”, define the label as 3.234”x4.234”, or we
suggest rounding this size up to 3.25” x 4.25”. Doing so will account for the margins and
print the desired sized image graphic. Keep in mind that the mark-to-mark distance of the
media must exactly match the form length.
Creating a custom form size is simple. Be sure to click System Change Form Settings.
Please remember that Custom Form sizes should be set up before label printing. Creating
custom form sizes is a system function, and you must close completely out of the printer
driver dialog for custom form sizes to be saved.
Keep in mind that all media used on the 300x must have an inkjet coating, regardless of any
other factors. Uncoated media will absorb the ink and the resulting print will be very dull, or
uncoated media may not absorb any ink and the resulting print will be smudgy and messy.
Make sure any media you use has a proper inkjet coating.
The following table provides a few pointers for choosing label media.
Polypropylene
Durable high quality synthetic that often has a better image
quality than paper. Does not tear.
Polyester
Very durable synthetic with excellent image quality and
superior durability. Polyesters generally have the highest
melting point. Does not tear.
Vinyl
Durable synthetic often with great image quality. Usually
the most affordable of the synthetics. Tears.
Matte
Very popular for product labels when glossy is not needed.
There are many types of labels with a matte finish that dry
instantly. Common choice for GHS/chemical labels where
durability is critical.
Semi-Gloss, Satin
Very popular choices and a great comprise between Gloss
and Matte.
Die-Cut Roll
A roll of media where individual labels have already been
cut out from the backing, usually rectangles, but circles or
any shape is possible. Normally the matrix, excess
backing, has already been removed so that only the label
part is left. Die-Cut Rolled media might have perforations
between the individual labels.
Die-Cut Fanfold
Folded media where individual labels have already been
cut out from the backing, usually rectangles, but circles are
any shape is possible. Normally the matrix, excess
facestock, has already been removed so that only the label
part is left. Fanfold media will have perforations to assist
with folding.
Marked Media
For die-cut media the 300x printers read a positioning mark
on the back of the media. Be sure to specify marks when
inquiring about die-cut media. The mark may be
positioned across the media gap (recommended) or it may
be positioned below the gap. There is a driver setting to
accommodate the precise placement of the gap.
Matrix Removal
Normally die-cut media will have the matrix, the part of the
media between the individual labels, removed. If the
matrix is not removed before printing, a post-printing
stripping process is used to remove the matrix.
Supplier NeuraLabel
NeuraLabel supplies a limited number of label stock.
NeuraLabel can also recommend a suitable label source
based on your specific needs and geographical location.
Media Converters
A converter purchases raw label stock and transforms it
into die-cut media. There are many converters that sell
media specifically for NeuraLabel printers.
Media Manufacturers
There are a variety of major media manufacturers that
produce bulk raw roll media. Many of these have an
excellent array of inkjet product choices.
Label shape Be sure that the artwork matches the shape and size of the
and size physical label sticker.
Margins The 300x printer margins are 0.117” inches on all sides for die-
cut labels. If you want to achieve a “full-bleed” look, you will
need to create the label page to make sure the margins are
outside the die-cut sticker. This can be done by setting up a
slightly larger printer page for your artwork.
For example, for a 4x4 inch label, make the printer page at least
.117” larger on each side. We suggest a 4x4 inch label be
printed on a 4.25x4.25 inch page size. This accommodates the
width and length. (The gap between the labels will be 0.25”,
making this the correct length.)14
Ink Color and If you want lots of color in your label artwork the 300x printer is
Coverage a great choice. Desktop digital printers (inkjet and laser)
generally have a more limited ability to produce large fields of
solid colors than their high-end counterparts, but it is possible to
achieve this on the 300x with an understanding of how the
system works.
The 300x has 10 dies across the width of the printer that
produce ink. These dies are automatically calibrated and
aligned so that banding (strips of uneven color) does not occur.
Run printhead cleaning to automatically clean and adjust the
system if banding occurs. In addition, NeuraLabel offers the
300x Toolbox to fine tune calibration and alignment for the best
possible result. If high quality large coverage color areas are
14 To achieve a “full-bleed” label look, the distance between die-cut labels must be 0.25”.
Font Size, The 300x is a high resolution printer and can print very small
Barcodes and fonts, fine barcodes and other details. However, it is critical to
Detail use the right printer settings, appropriate vector artwork and
high quality media. 300x can print font size as low as 2 points
(visible under a microscope). Follow these instructions to
achieve high quality detail printing.
The following table lists some special case media and printing scenarios and discusses
appropriate ink settings.
Glossy Paper Glossy Paper is one of the most popular media choices for
economy and appeal. However, this media type often has
trouble absorbing black ink. Here are some things to try when
printing on glossy paper.
Matte Paper Matte Paper is much more forgiving in its handling of black ink.
Usually a Plain Paper setting works great for this media. Ink
Saver may be lowered if desired or left at OFF.
Satin and Semi- Use the guidelines for Glossy Paper, however Synthetic Labels
Gloss Paper setting is usually an excellent choice.
Kimduras and Materials made for GHS printing or chemical resistance often
other high absorb a lot of ink and have a dull appearance.
absorbency
GHS or - Use an Ink Saver Setting OFF to allow for the maximum
chemical amount of ink.
resistant
synthetics - Use a Plain Paper Media setting or a Matte Labels
Media setting which use a lot of black ink.
Labels that look If the label looks oversaturated and appears to have too much
oversaturated ink, turn ink saver down until you find the best setting.
Feature Tips
Mark Adjust Mark Adjust is a setting in the driver that will position the image
in the continuous direction.
- For labels with the mark across the label gap, a Mark
Adjust of about -14 is the approximate correct value.
Scaling the It is important to make sure that the label artwork correctly fits
Image to fit on the label page. This requires not only creating correctly
sized artwork, but also requires a page size (or windows form
size) that matches the physical label. Here are a few tips.
- The label form length will be the sticker length plus the
gap length. If your label media has 0.25” gaps between
the labels, the form length will be the sticker length +
0.25”. It is recommended to add 0.25” to each label
dimension (XY) for the best fit. For example, a 4”x6”
sticker on media with 0.25” gaps would have a form size
of 4.25”x6.25”.
- If the artwork does not fit the label because the aspect
ratio is wrong, you’ll need to either modify your design,
“squeeze or stretch” your design, or change your media.
Understanding your media size will help speed up the
design and printing process.
Stretching the Once the label is the right size it is also possible to stretch the
image to fit image slightly in the continuous direction. This allows for a few
lines of overspray for full-bleed printing. Label stretching can be
done in the printer Web Server. It is also possible to stretch the
label using USB via the 300x Toolbox.
When printing, it is important to make sure the ink is dry on the labels before handling them.
Some medias, most synthetics and matte papers, dry instantly and can be handled within
seconds of printing. Other medias, especially glossy papers, may take longer to dry. If the
label dry time is not satisfactory, select an Ink Saver setting to reduce the amount of ink. If
black ink is the only problem, select a media setting that uses less or no black ink.
Performance can also be improved by slowing down the printer either by choosing Best
mode in the driver or choosing a slower print speed. Finally, if using an unwinder, consider
positioning the unwinder further away from the printer. This also gives the media more time
to dry and can result in a better final product.
Managing Ink
7
In continuous printing it is important to use Ink Cartridges full enough to complete a job. Each
Yellow, Magenta or Cyan ink cartridge is rated to print 6,600 letter-sized labels at 5%
coverage, and a Black ink cartridge is rated to print 9,200 labels.
You may want to calculate the coverage for a particular label so that you can better estimate
and understand ink use. Neuralog provides Ink Estimator application to estimate ink
coverage for a particular label. To use Ink Estimator a printer “PRN” file is created with the
NeuraLabel printer driver. This file is then submitted into the Ink Estimator program for ink
use results. Ink Estimator is downloadable from the NeuraLabel web site. More info can
also be found there. Keep in mind that Ink Estimator only provides an estimate and is not
able to determine the exact amount of ink required.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
Do not remove an ink cartridge from its package until you are ready to use it.
Always be ready to change the ink cartridge as soon as Low Ink is declared for continuous
printing.
Any damage caused by a non-Neuralog/NeuraLabel print cartridge is not covered under the
NeuraLabel warranty and service agreements.
- Grasp the edge of the old ink cartridge and then pull the cartridge straight out to
remove it.
- Remove the new ink cartridge from the packaging. Do not touch the metal
connector of the ink cartridge. Fingerprints on the connector can cause print
quality problems
- Insert the new ink cartridge into the printer.
- Close the ink cartridge door.
8 Printing System
Requirements
The following sections provide the minimum Operating System, hardware and network
requirements for successful printing on your NeuraLabel 300x.
8.2.1.1Windows® 7, 8 ..10
• 3 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
• 4 GB RAM
• 4 GB available HD space, solid state drive recommended
• Microsoft® Internet Explorer or equivalent browser
• USB/ethernet
NOTE: If Microsoft Security Essentials is running AND real time protection is ON, you
must exclude the spooler process.
8.3 Connectivity
The NeuraLabel 300x works with both USB and Network (Wired, IPv4). Older slower
computers and network environments may result in slower printing.
The NeuraLabel 300x is not meant to work over a wireless network. Continuous printing
involves large amounts of data and wireless networks will not be sufficient to handle this
data. If a wireless connection is used (via a switch or router) print speeds will be
significantly reduced.
NOTE: If you notice a significantly reduced print speed, make sure the host PC is not
connected to a wireless switch and sending data to through your network wirelessly.
8.3.1 USB
NeuraLabel 300x is compatible with USB. In fact, USB may result in better performance
because a busy network may result in slower printing. A USB cable not longer than 5 m
(16.4 ft) is recommended.
8.3.2 Network
The NeuraLabel 300x will work on your corporate or private network, using either a
static or dynamic IP address.
Set the network type to Automatic if you wish to use a dynamic IP address. This will use
the DHCP server on your network.
The NeuraLabel 300x requires a network link speed of 100 Mbps, full-duplex operation.
Marked media is usually associated with a die cut. In this case the labels will be printed
onto the media at specific marked intervals. This marked media might be on a roll or in
fanfold form, and it might have perforations between the die-cut labels. Any die-cut
media used with the 300x will need to have marks. The marks allow the printer to
precisely position the label contents on the page to align the printed data to the media.
If you do not have or need die-cut marked media, but have an unmarked roll instead,
you will use the printer in a "no marks" mode where the labels will be printed on the
"blank" unmarked roll. Often the guide or timing marks for the labels are printed directly
on the media as the label itself is printed. These marks are then used for post
processing of the labels.
There are 8 different printer configurations based on whether your media has marks or
not, whether borderless printing is selected, and whether you are making copies of a
single label or printing multi-page jobs such as sequenced labels. Each of these is
explained below.
For Rolled Media with no marks, set Marks in the printer driver to
No Marks. Single label copies may be printed in borderless or
bordered mode. Furthermore, borderless copies may be printed
with or without a gap between the labels
Figure 9-1 Unconverted
Media with No Marks
Borderless Printing set to ON will print the page "full-bleed" in the continuous
direction. Normal margins are applied to the non-continuous side of the label. This case
has 2 options.
Borderless Copies: Normal There may be a small gap (<0.2") between the labels.
The exact size of the gap is dependent upon label size.
Borderless Printing set to OFF will print the page with margins on both sides of the
label. The spacing of the labels should be the exact size of the labels.
Borderless Printing set to ON will print the page "full-bleed" in the continuous
direction. Normal margins are applied to the non-continuous side of the label. The labels
will be butted up against one another. The resulting print will appear to be one seamless
continuous image.
Borderless Printing set to OFF will print the page with margins on both sides of the
label. The spacing of the labels should be the exact size of the labels.
For rolled or fanfold media with marks on each label, set Marks in the printer driver to
Marks Only.
Borderless Printing set to OFF will print the page with margins on both sides of the
label. The spacing of the labels should match the exact size of the labels.
Borderless Printing set to ON is not normally used for label printing in this
configuration. Borderless ON will print the pages "full-bleed" in the continuous direction.
Normal margins are applied to the non-continuous side of the label. The pages will be
butted up against one another such that the resulting print appears to be one seamless
continuous image. Note that whenever Borderless ON and Marks Only are selected
together in the driver, the print will begin by synching on a mark and all other marks are
ignored. This is not a normal label printing mode.
Borderless Printing set to OFF will print the page with margins on both sides of the
label. The spacing of the labels should match the exact size of the labels.
For copies, a small gap (<0.2") might appear in between the individual borderless label
pages. Enhanced Precision mode available to eliminate this gap and create a seamless
print if desired. However, performance may be reduced for this option.
For printing on continuous label media with marks, such as die-cut label media, set
Borderless Printing to Off. This will prevent printing on the stripped area of the liner. Do
not use Borderless printing with marked media.
For printing on continuous label media with no marks, such as a continuous roll,
Borderless Printing may be set to On.
Note that with Borderless Printing set to On, the driver reports zero border all around
and Print Preview shows it that way, however, the printer still applies left and right
borders.
Hint: To effectively create full-bleed in the non-continuous direction for labels less than
8.5 inches wide, define the page to be slightly wider than the media.
Initial Slow Print - Use this setting to allow the print to start slowly, giving you time to
feed the media onto the output roller.
Leading Blank Pages - This feature places one or more blank labels at the beginning
of the job. For example, you may need blanks to attach the labels to the output roller.
Trailing Blank Pages - This feature places one or more blank labels at the end of the
job, in case this is needed for the output roller. It also allows the entire job to be out of
the printer once the print stops.
Rotate 180 - This feature may be needed to orient the labels in a particular direction for
your post process applicator.
Unmarked Media
Marked Media
Make sure the paper/page size you select in the driver exactly
matches the measured media page size, mark-to-mark.
GHS labels are commonly found on drums, pales, totes and IBC's15. Large format drum
labels range in size from 8.5"x11" to 8.5" x 22", but the labels can be any size. Often
these labels are sequentially numbered and printed in batches. The following are tips
and guidelines for printing GHS labels on the NeuraLabel 300x.
GHS label media is usually marked. While the 300x can print on marked or unmarked
media, most GHS labels are die-cut rectangular labels, and therefore must be marked
to allow the printer to distinguish the individual labels. This mark must meet NeuraLabel
specifications and can be found on the back of the media.
GHS label media may be fanfold or it may be on a roll. See the section on roll-to-roll for
more information on rolled media. The figures below show the non-printable back side
of typical fanfold GHS labels marked for the NeuraLabel 300x. The individual labels in
this sample are letter size. These die-cut labels are attached together by a release liner
and separated by perforations where the fold occurs. The actual label (sticker part that
is peeled off) will be slightly smaller than the media page itself. It's important to
remember that the label you design in your application must fit on the peeled label and
not bleed into the media backing.
The following specific features in the printer driver are important for GHS printing.
Paper Size is set to the exact size of your label media, including the release liner.
Borderless Printing is set to OFF. This is the required value for GHS drum labels on
marked media. Do not change this value.
Use Marks is set to MARKS ONLY because the diec-ut media will have marks on the
back to indicate label position. If your media does not have marks you may not be able
to use the printer in this configuration. If this is the case, contact Neuralog Support.
Mark Adjust may be used to center the label on the page in the continuous direction.
Below is an example of a GHS label. These labels have critical information about the
chemical contents of a container. They often have dynamic fields that are updated in the
labeling application. GHS labels often have barcodes. They may be numbered by batch
and by individual label.
Also note that some label media may meet the British Standard BS5609, a standard for
pressure-sensitive adhesive labels for marine applications. Unprinted media may meet
a BS5609 Section 2 standard, while printed media may meet a BS5609 Section 3
standard. If your application has a requirement to meet BS5609 standards, NeuraLabel
can recommend medias that meet the Section 3 standards for our printers.
Prime labels are often printed on a roll-to-roll configuration, but they can also be on
marked fanfold media. Media on rolls may be marked (the labels are individual pages,
often separated by a perforation) or the media may be a continuous unmarked roll.
When printing prime labels, check whether your media is marked (die-cut) or unmarked.
For continuous unmarked media, you can print the labels as bordered or borderless. In
either case, the label page size will remain the same, however a borderless label will
have no margin in the continuous direction.
The following specific features in the printer driver are important for prime label printing.
Paper Size is set to the exact size of your label media. See the section Paper/Output
for review of the details of setting the paper size.
Borderless Printing may be ON or OFF. If you need to print borderless prime labels,
see the next section Printing Borderless Prime Labels.
Use Marks is NO MARKS for web press mode or MARKS ONLY for marked media.
Check your media and select the appropriate setting.
Borderless Copies require special configuration. See the next section Printing
Borderless Prime Labels.
See the section Using Roll-to-Roll if you are using rolled media for printing. You may
with to use Leading/Trailing Blank Pages or Initial Slow Print with your roll-to-roll unit.
Figure 9-7 Printer Driver Setup for Prime Labels on a Web Press
If you are printing borderless copies (rather than a sequential multi-paged borderless
print), choose from two driver settings for Borderless Copies.
Normal prints the copies at the fastest possible speed. The page size will be rounded
up to an even size, so a gap may appear between label copies.
Enhanced Precision prints the copies butted up against one another, creating a
completely seamless print.
HINT: For the easiest workflow, install additional copies of the NeuraLabel printer driver
for each type of printing. For example:
Remember to remove paper from the Cut Sheet Tray 2 for Tray 2 Continuous
printing.
You can also use the Ink Settings panel to set the level at which the printer will provide
a Low Ink warning. For continuous printing you should change the ink soon after Low
Ink is declared to reduce the chances of running out of ink during a long job. The
default value for Low Ink is 20%, however, the value for Low Ink is customizable.
Note that the display below shows Genuine Neuralog16 Cartridges Installed. The 300x
requires Genuine Neuralog Cartridges to function; ink from non-authorized vendors will
not work in the printer.
16 Neuralog, NeuraLabel and NeuraLabel Printing Solutions are all names for the same company.
If you notice print quality defects such as streaks, smudges or smears, you can run
cleaning routines on the printer. Clean Printhead is accessible through the Operator
Panel Tools menu. Two levels of cleaning can be run, each lasting about 12 minutes.
The Print Quality Report is printed out after printhead cleaning. See the Print Quality
Report section for a sample report. Clean Ink Smear (accessible from the Print Quality
Toolbox) does a quicker cleaning of the printhead. A blank page is printed when the
routine is complete. See the Clean Ink Smear section for more information.
• To access the Continuous Print Preferences select Settings from the main
screen.
• Under Preferences select Continuous Printing. The Continuous Printing
Preferences panel will appear.
Use Robust Mark Detect if the marks on the back of your media are of poor quality and
they would be more visible to the printer if placed closer to the sensor.
Try Robust Mark Detect if the printer is declaring mark errors and there seems to be no
explanation. (It is possible that the sensor cannot consistently read the marks.)
Image stretch is useful for achieving a slight overspray in the continuous direction if one
is needed for full-coverage label printing. If full-coverage label printing is desired, it is
useful to create a slight overspray in both the X (non-continuous) and Y (continuous)
label dimensions. An X overspray is easily achieved by slightly increasing the printer
margin. The Y direction however needs to be kept at the mark-to-mark label length. To
achieve overspray in the Y direction image stretch is used.
Note that image stretch is a percentage, and the same stretch will produce different
results on a 3 inch label than a 30 inch label. Do not use an image stretch over 1% or
one that produces more than a few lines of overspray. If the image is stretched too
much, mark early errors can occur.
- Wireless network
- Very poor network
- Very old computer
- Outdated Windows operating system
You should not need to change the Data Flow Control. The default High setting has
been found to work with essentially all printing environments. Try the Low setting only if
you are having trouble. Do not turn Data Flow Control to Off.
Data Flow Control affects network printing only and is not related to USB printing.
The Default Jogging Tray for the 300x Standard should be set to Tray 1.
(Continuous Tray 1 printing)
The Default Jogging Tray for the 300x ST and 300x CP should be set to Tray 2.
(Continuous Tray 2 printing)
All printer doors/lids must be closed for the printer to jog continuous media.
The Default Media Exit must be set to Upper Right for the 300x Standard and 300x CP
because that is where the media exits the printer.
The Default Media Exit must be set to Lower Left for the 300x ST printer.
NOTE: The Default Media Exit setting does not actually control the media path. The
media path is controlled by the physical configuration of the printer itself. The Default
Media Exit setting controls the printer sensors that detect media within the media path.
If the Default Media Exit does not match the 300x configuration, an undetected jam
might occur that can damage the printer. Do not change this value unless advised to do
so by NeuraLabel support.
Keep in mind that enabling the 3” Media Trailer may cause an additional blank label to
be present between jobs for smaller label sizes. This setting should be changed based
on user preference.
Setting the Media Trailer sets if for all 300x configurations, however it is only significant
for the 300x ST where the end of the media is already close to the printer exit.
• To access the Image Registration select Settings from the main screen.
• Under Preferences select Image Registration. The Image Registration
preferences panel will appear.
NOTE: Only use Image Registration after the media has been well centered in the
printer track and Mark Adjust has been set.
The Image Registration Panel has separate registration settings for Tray 1 and Tray 2.
These settings affect both continuous and cut sheet printing for each tray.
For Image Registration of Tray 1, use the first row of values, X1 shift and Y1 shift.
The X2 shift and Y2 shift would be for Tray 1 cut sheet duplex printing and are not
applicable to continuous printing.
For Image Registration of Tray 2, use the third row of values, X1 shift and Y1 shift.
The X2 shift and Y2 shift would be for Tray 2 cut sheet duplex printing and are not
applicable to continuous printing.
Image registration is most easily accessed through the printer’s embedded web server,
but can also be set via the NeuraLabel 300x Toolbox program. Your computer and
printer do not need to be on your office network. Simply plug in a network cable from
the host computer to the printer, in the same way a USB cable is used. Your Windows
computer will auto-sense the printer and assign a local address. Please see our blog
entry USB or Network Printing [http://www.neuralabel.com/blog/2016/04/27/usb-
network-best] for instructions.
The values of image adjustment are in millimeters (mm). The range of adjustment is -
5mm to 5mm. The increments of adjustment will be rounded to 0.25mm. Printers
may normally need up to +/- 2mm of adjustment.
Example: In the previous figure showing the Image Registration Panel, Tray 2
continuous printing has been affected. The printed image has been moved 1 mm in the
X (non-continuous) direction, towards the back of the printer. The printed image has
been moved 0.5 mm in the Y (continuous) direction, towards the top of the printed page.
Example: In the following figure showing the Image Registration Panel, Tray 1
continuous printing has been affected. The printed image has been moved 1 mm in the
X (non-continuous) direction, towards the back of the printer.
To perform image registration on the printer, print 2-3 labels, adjust the registration, and
repeat until satisfied. It is recommended to look at the second and third printed label.
Adjust image registration by facing the printer operator panel and sending a sample
continuous print. Important: The printer media guides must be adjusted such that
the media glides smoothly but snugly. Otherwise the media will “wander” and the
registration will not be effective. Perform image registration only after centering the
media in the printer track.
Once these steps are complete, all continuous printing should be centered on the label
media. Again, remember that the media guides must always be adjusted properly for
the specific media width.
Alternatively, if you are printing over USB, you can select Restore Factory Defaults from
the printer Operator Panel. Because Restore Factory Defaults resets network
connections, do not use this option if printing over a network.
The panel will say Restoring Factory Defaults. When complete all Image Registration
values will be reset to 0.
11.8 Administrator
The Administrator panel allows you to setup a user name and password to control
access to your printer.
11.10 Backup
The Backup and Restore page allows you to create a backup file for certain user
settings. These are not related to continuous printing.
11.11 Firewall
The Firewall panel allows you to enable and configure firewalls.
12 Operator Panel
The NeuraLabel 300x printer has an operator panel to assist the user with basic
printing. Most buttons on this panel are self-explanatory. The following section provides
useful information about the display.
Note that the red X cancels a print whenever the Operator Panel reads "Now
Printing...". Press the Red X twice to cancel a job when the printer is not in this state,
once to move to the "Now Printing..." state and a second time to cancel the job.
The three buttons on the RIGHT side of the display are usually used to scroll
or select OK. The display will dynamically update to show the functionality of
these buttons.

Clean Printhead
For best result use ColorLok paper. Only use Genuine Neuralog Ink.
The Clean Printhead routines are accessed from Setup->Tools. There are two primary
levels of cleaning that can be run to clean and adjust the printheads. Level 1 cleaning
should suffice for most print quality issues. Level 2 repeats the operations performed in
Level 1. Printhead Cleaning Level 3 is also available; it performs additional alignment
and leveling routines. Make sure Tray 2 is loaded with white paper before cleaning
begins. Press OK to start cleaning.
The following screen will appear. Scroll down to read the entire message. Press OK to
start the Level 1 12 minute cleaning process. Press the red X to cancel. During the
cleaning the panel will alternate between these screens.
When the process is done, the Print Quality Report will be printed. This report is broken
down into the four colors and can be inspected for quality issues. If dots or streaks
appear in one or more of the color groups, continue to clean the printhead.
After the Level 1 cleaning screen another screen will appear. Scroll down to read the
entire message. Press OK to start the Level 2 cleaning process. Press the red X to
cancel. If no action is taken the operator panel will return to the home screen.
Once Printhead Cleaning Level 2 is complete, optionally run Level 3 Cleaning. Level 3
performs die alignment and leveling and can also address narrow or wide vertical bands
in the image.
The Clean Ink Smear routine is accessed from Setup->Tools. Make sure Tray 2 is
loaded with white paper before cleaning begins. Press OK to start cleaning. This
process might take several minutes and starts with no other warning.
The following screen will appear. Scroll down to read the entire message. Press OK to

14 Troubleshooting
The following sections provide a variety of information for troubleshooting problems with
the NeuraLabel 300x.
• Remove the stack of media from the tray and flex it, rotate it 180 degrees, and
flip it over (paper). Return the stack of media to the tray.
• Use only media that meets NeuraLabel specifications for this product. Use high
quality inkjet coated paper. Cheap laser printer paper may not be compatible.
• Use media that is not wrinkled, folded, or damaged. If necessary, use media from
a different package. Make sure all media in the tray is the same type and size.
• Make sure the tray is not overfilled. If it is, remove the entire stack of media from
the tray, straighten the stack, and then return less media to the tray.
• For 300x ST and 300x CP printers, only fill the printer tray half way, no more than
250 sheets of paper at a time.
• Make sure the printer guides in the tray are adjusted correctly.
• Use only media (continuous and cut sheet) that meets NeuraLabel specifications
in the NeuraLabel 300x. Light-weight, short grain paper is not recommended.
• Always use media that is not wrinkled, curled, or damaged. If necessary, use
media from a different package.
• Make sure the media is loaded straight into the printer and not at an angle.
• Use media that has not previously been printed or copied on.
• Make sure the Cut Sheet Tray 2 is not overfilled. If it is, remove the paper from
the tray, straighten the stack, and then return some of the paper to the tray.
• Make sure you only feed a single sheet at a time through Continuous Tray 1 or
Continuous Tray 2.
• Make sure the media guides are adjusted correctly for both trays. Adjust the
guides so they are touching the media without bending it.
• Make sure that Continuous Tray 1 is fully opened or Cut Sheet Tray 2 is fully
inserted in the printer.
• Heavy, embossed, or perforated media should only be used with Continuous
Tray 1 or Continuous Tray 2 printing.

Traces of ink might remain in the printer after a jam and leave marks on the printed
pages. This problem typically resolves itself after a few sheets have been printed. If
quality problems persist, run Printhead Cleaning.
The jammed sheet may also be accessible by removing Tray 2 (the drawer) and
removing the jammed sheet by pulling it to the right and then out of the product. The
picture above is looking up into the printer with the Tray 2 drawer removed.
If the jammed sheet is not visible outside the printer or easily accessible in Tray 1, open
the left door to access the jammed sheet.
If the sheet is visible inside the door, gently remove the media from the printer. If the
sheet is not visible or will not freely exit the printer, continue to the next step.
Lower the platen by pressing down on the green tab. This will cause the printer to try to
feed the sheet through the print zone. You may need to gently pull on the sheet if it
does not feed. Remove the sheet.
Lift the green tab to place the platen back into its operating position.
Reinstall the duplexer and close the left printer door when done.
Open the Tray 2 lid and pull media back if not already in
printer. Remove wrinkled media and reload.
Gently pull the media out thought the front exit (or
upper exit for C-Path).
NOTE: Use caution when removing media so that the inside of the printer is not
damaged. Gently pull out evenly with both hands; do not jerk or yank.
WARNING: While it is not easy to get a label stuck in the straight through printer path, it
is possible. Very poor quality media with extra loose release can still come off in a
printer, even in a straight through path. Do not use extremely poor quality media in the
printer. If the labels start dispensing in your hands before you even load them into the
printer, they might come off in the straight through path.
Open Tray 2 by pulling it out and releasing the latch at the rear left of the tray.
Remove the jammed sheet by pulling it to the right and then out of the product.
Close Tray 2.
NOTE: To close the tray, push in the middle or with even pressure on both sides. Avoid
pushing on one side only.

Gently remove any visible paper from the rollers and delivery area.
NOTE: If the sheet tears, make sure that all fragments are removed before you resume
printing. Do not use sharp objects to remove fragments.
Are labels the correct size (same size as the media), but slightly in the wrong place in
the continuous direction?
➢ YES, change Mark Adjust to shift image on media. 10 units = 1/10 inch. Negative
values are OK.
Labels are too close to the leading (marked) edge of the media.
o Decrease Mark Adjust to move away from edge
Labels are too far from the leading edge of the media.
o Increase Mark Adjust to move closer to edge.
➢ NO, labels are not the correct size and are printing across the media
Check to see that the label size you selected in the printer driver EXACTLY matches the
measured mark-to-mark media length.
Make sure Use Marks is set to Marks Only for marked media printing
14.6.1 Prints are too far down from media leading edge
Mark Adjust can be used to change the position of the print with respect to the top of the
form or page. The marked end of the continuous media is the top of the page.
- To move the printed image up the page, increase the value of Mark Adjust.
Caution: Mark Adjust moves the printed image up and down on the media with respect
to the mark. This allows for labels to be centered correctly on media that does not meet
specification requirements. With this liberty it is possible to set Mark Adjust to start the
print "off" the page. Do not set Mark Adjust such that the print will start off the media.
Undesirable results will occur.
The most likely cause is that the printer input paper track has not been properly
adjusted. Slide in the track edges so that the media slides within the track. Always
make sure the media fits snugly within the track; do not overtighten.
Figure 14-14 Continuous Media Guides for Tray 1 (left) and Tray 2 (right)
In rare cases we have seen that the internal guide has come out of its track. This is not
likely, but if the printed image is extremely off, check to make sure the guides are sliding
correctly in their track.
It is also possible that the label image itself needs to be centered on the page. If the
label print is still not centered once the guides are properly adjusted, you can modify the
image in the printing application or modify the image placement using Image
Registration. Image Registration can be used to fine tune label placement in both the
continuous and non-continuous direction.
• The media is warped, wrinkled or curled. Remove wrinkled pages and reload.
• The media is crooked with respect to the input of the printer. Make sure the
media is inserted straight and flat into the printer. See section Loading
Continuous Media into the Printer.
• The adjustable printer guides are too narrow and grabbing the media. Widen
them, but only slightly, until the media can slide within the guides.
• There is a piece of media from a previous job left in the paper path. When this
occurs, correct any problems and reload the media. If the media and guides are
correct, the print should begin with no further issues.
If the distance between the marks on the label media do not match the selected page
size, the printer will first attempt to adjust to the media, and if that is not possible will
declare a Mark Early or Mark Late warning. The behavior is designed to prevent
incorrect prints and to avoid media waste.
Note that Mark Early and Mark Late only occur when a mismatch between physical
media and driver page selection has occurred. If the selected page size matches the
physical media, this error will not normally occur. If the error does occur, this indicates
an external drag on the printing system.
Mark Early
If the printer detects a mark too soon, it usually means that the physical media page
size is smaller than the specified page size the user selected in the driver. For
example, if the user loaded media 6 inches in length but selected a page size in the
driver that was 8 inches in length, the printer would begin to print, but then immediately
declare Mark Early because the second mark was detected too soon on the 6-inch
media.
If Mark Early occurs, remove the media from the printer and do one of the following.
If the user really meant to print the 8-inch label, find and load the correct 8-inch media. If
the user meant to print a 6-inch label, find and load the correct label file on the computer
OR make sure the correct page size has been chosen from the driver. If you need to
print an 8-inch label and only have 6-inch media, use a "shrink to fit" option if available
in your application. Make sure the page size selected in driver matches the physical
media that you have.
If you think the page sizes match, check to make sure the orientation (Landscape or
Portrait) is correct.
o In the physical media, the Width is the perforated side and the Length is measured
"perf-to-perf" or "mark" to "mark".
NeuraLabel 300x allows for a 0.1 inch tolerance in page size for this case. If the
physical media is less than 0.1 inch too small, the printer will place the labels and print
as expected. If the physical media is equal to or more than 0.1 inch too small, Mark
Early is declared.
A Mark Early can also result from external drag from a rewinding system. If you are
using the NeuraLabel NoTouch Roll System and Mark Early errors occur, it is likely that
your NoTouch Rewinder Sensor needs to be calibrated. Contact NeuraLabel support
for help in running the simple calibration routine.
Mark Late
If the printer detects a mark too late, it means that the physical media page size is
larger than the specified page size that the user selected in the driver. For example, if
the user loaded media 10 inches in length, but selected a page size in the driver that
was 8 inches in length, the printer would begin to print, and then immediately declare
Mark Late because the second mark was detected too late on the 10-inch media.
If Mark Late occurs, remove the media from the printer and do one of the following.
If the user really meant to print the 8-inch label, find and load the correct 8-inch media. If
the user meant to print a 10-inch label, find and load the correct label file on the
computer OR make sure the correct page size has been chosen from the driver. If you
need to print an 8-inch label and only have 10-inch media you can do so. Make sure the
page size selected in driver matches the physical media that you have.
If you think the page sizes match, check the orientation as described above.
NeuraLabel 300x allows for a 1-inch tolerance in page size for this case. If the physical
media is less than 1 inch too long, the printer will place the labels and print as expected;
otherwise Mark Late is declared. HOWEVER, if you choose to print on media slightly
longer than the page size you select, the placement of the label on the media will not be
correct. This can be overcome by using Mark Adjust to specify exactly label placement.
In summary, the specified driver page size should match the physical media size
exactly. If in doubt measure with a ruler. Measure "perf-to-perf" or "mark-to-mark" so
that you include the entire length of the label media page (not just the label itself). Some
boxes of label media are labeled incorrectly.
If the physical label is less than 0.1 inch shorter or less than 1 inch longer than the page
you specified in the driver, the printer will print anyway and place the label on the page.
You may need to adjust Mark Adjust to center the label.
If the physical label is more than 0.1 inch shorter a Mark Early will be declared. If the
physical label is more than 1 inch longer a Mark Late will be declared.
A Mark Late can also result from external drag from an unwinding system. If you are
using an unwinder and a Mark Late errors occur, it is likely that your unwinder is turned
off, obstructed, or too tight.
A Mark Late can also result if fanfold media is pulled from the floor or from a box with a
restricted media flow, as this can place too much drag on the system. Try removing the
media from the box and placing it at a location closer to printer input level.
If the Mark Missed error is declared at the beginning of the print, it is likely that the
media has been loaded upside down. The media should be loaded such that the marks
face upward and the printable side faces downward for the 300x Standard. Media is
loaded marks down on the 300x ST and 300x CP. If Mark Missed is declared and the
media is loaded correctly, the printer may need to be calibrated.
• Use the correct media type setting in the printer driver for the label media
• Use only media that meets NeuraLabel specifications
• Check the ink cartridges
• Clean ink smears
• Clean the printhead

If you observe scratches, or other damage on the metal connector, replace the ink
cartridge. If the metal connector does not appear to be damaged, push the cartridge
gently back into its slot until it locks in place. Print a few pages to see if the problem has
resolved.
CAUTION: Do not touch the metal connector on the edge of the cartridge. Fingerprints
on the metal connector can cause print-quality problems.
Make sure the printer is turned on and that the operator panel indicates it is ready.
If the operator panel does not indicate the printer is ready, turn the product off and then
on again.
If the operator panel indicates the printer is ready, try sending the job again.
If the operator panel indicates an error, resolve the error and then try to print a test page
from the operator panel. If the test page prints, there may be a communication problem
between the printer and the computer you are trying to print from.
Make sure the cables are all connected correctly. If the product is connected to a
network, check the following items:
Check the light next to the network connection on the back of the printer. If the network
is active, the light is green.
Make sure that you are using a network cable and not a phone cord to connect to the
network.
Make sure the network router, hub, or switch is turned on and that it is working correctly.
Install the NeuraLabel driver software from the NeuraLabel site. Only the NeuraLabel
300x printer driver will work with the continuous printer.
From the List of printers on the computer, right-click on your printer and click
Properties, and open the Ports tab. If you are using a network cable to connect to the
network, make sure the printer name listed on the Ports tab matches the product name
on the product configuration page.
If you are using a USB cable, make sure the box is checked next to Virtual printer port
for USB.
If you are using a personal firewall system on the computer, it might be blocking
communication with the product. Try temporarily disabling the firewall to see if it is the
source of the problem.
If your computer or the printer is connected to a wireless network, low signal quality or
interference might be delaying print jobs. Avoid using this printer on a wireless network
because the result may be poor performance.
If your computer or the printer is connected to a wireless network, low signal quality or
interference might be delaying print jobs.
Keep in mind that many print settings, such as Best mode, significantly reduce print
speed.
15 Printer Calibration
Routines
The 300x printer has several calibration routines that might be used by NeuraLabel
support to restore your printer. The routines are published here for end user
convenience. Use these routines only as directed by NeuraLabel support.
If mark detection on your printer does not seem to be functioning correctly, contact
NeuraLabel support; they will guide you through the following calibration

The NeuraLabel 300x prints on both continuous and sheeted pressure sensitive label
media, in addition to other types of paper media. Continuous media can be die-cut with
registration marks or unconverted with no marks. Die-cut media will be on marked rolls
or marked fanfold. Unconverted media will be on unmarked rolls; any marks needed for
post-print die-cutting and finishing will be added during printing.
NeuraLabel 300x works well with a wide variety of facestocks, especially those that are
coated for high receptivity to pigment inks. Examples include paper as well as synthetic
films such as polypropylene, polyester and vinyl. A particular facestock and label
construction is chosen to meet the requirements of the application.
The supported form or page sizes are as follows. Note that the measured width and
length are of the entire label sheet. The actual peel-off label will be smaller.
Length is 1.5” in length to 22” for die-cut labels with marks. The length may be
extended to 39” for “Normal” mode only printing (no Best mode). The length restriction
is per page and is not applicable to continuous media with no marks.
The NeuraLabel 300x prints with 35/300 (.117) inch margins on each side along the
length of each page. Most die-cut labels typically have 1/8” gaps or ¼” gaps between
17 The 300x Standard printer requires a narrow media snap-in for media less than 3 inches wide.
the labels. Note that to achieve “full-coverage” label printing, a ¼” gap must be
present between the labels to accommodate the printer margins.
For die-cut labels, the standard matrix is 1/16” - 1/4” wide on each side of the label.”
The waste matrix can either be stripped off or left on for removal after printing. If the
waste matrix is left on, the width of the matrix on each side (not the gap between labels)
must be at least 1/5”, to prevent the waste matrix from peeling off and getting stuck
inside the printer during printing.
Die-cut label media requires registration marks to ensure that each label registers
properly to top of form. The NeuraLabel 300x mark specification is illustrated as follows.
Because the printer allows for a mark, or top of form, adjustment in the driver, the actual
specification is flexible for mark placement. However, there are two recommended
specification standards.
