damage to the PrestoDR.
The FDA (CDRH) requires that manufactures must include a specific requirement that the
assembler perform all applicable tests at the time of installation. A thorough explanation of the
equipment required and step-by-step instructions must provide by the manufacturer. The
instructions include a requirement to record key data to demonstrate at alliterative that all test were
performed and that the equipment was left in full compliance with the standards.
As an assembler you must perform these tests for the applicable requirements at the time of
installation and following any repairs, which could alter the performance.
It is necessary for the assembler to verify compliance of the series of tests. A series of tests, when
performed at the time of installation, with 21 CFR, sub–chapter J, part 1020, performance
standards.
These tests are described in chapter 10 - Acceptance Test and must be performed before releasing
PrestoDR for use. An Installation evaluation report at the end of chapter 10 and should be
completed by the installer. In order to facilitate a timely installation and ensure compliance, it is
recommended that the installer review this manual and its entirety and then start at the beginning,

selected PC. For proper system performance, all hardware modules that are provided by the
OEM must comply with the specifications set by Thales.
All regulatory issues of the Compact configuration must be taken care of by the OEM
PrestoDR uses the Pixium RAD 4143 detector manufactured by ‘Trixell” of France.
The Pixium 4143 digital flat-panel X-ray detector offers outstanding advantages to the users
of radiological equipment.
• Rapidity: immediately usable images, in a single exposure.
• Cost savings: no time or resources spent in developing film.
• High performance
• Format, high resolution and wide dynamic range.
In the PrestoDR implementation of the Pixium 4143 detector, 2775 pixels x 2874 pixels are
read out from the detector. The area corresponding to the 2775 pixels x 2874 pixels, is 411
mm x 425 mm. A rectangular area is defined during the Flat Panel Display (FPD) calibration
that delimitates the actual imaging area used in the detector.
The Pixium 4143 FPD has its internal microprocessor that is controlled (via Ethernet 100T)
by PrestoDR. The latter sends commands, reads statuses, prepares the detector for an
exposure, synchronizes the X-ray pulse of the generator with the FPD and controls the image
readout and preparation of the detector for the next exposure. A minimal time lapse is
necessary between consecutive exposures (typically 10 seconds).
The detector(s) is calibrated at the PrestoDR installation. Furthermore, periodical
recalibrations are recommended.
System Description 15
2.3.2 Pixium Portable 3543 Flat Panel Detector
PrestoDR uses the Pixium Portable 3543 detector manufactured by ‘Trixell” from France.
This is a solid-State X-ray Imager (SSXI) based on an A-Si matrix of pixels and a
scintillator (CsI (T l)).
The Pixium Portable 3543 digital flat-panel X-ray detector offers outstanding advantages to
the users of radiological equipment.
• Rapidity: immediately usable images, in a single exposure.
• Cost savings: no time or resources spent in developing film.
• High performance
• Format, high resolution and wide dynamic range.
In the PrestoDR implementation of the Pixium 3543 detector, 3000 pixels x 2400 pixels are
read out from the detector. The area corresponding to the 3000 pixels x 2400 pixels, is
432.0 mm x 345.6 mm. A rectangular area is defined during the Flat Panel Display (FPD)
calibration that delimitates the actual imaging area used in the detector.
The Pixium 3543 has its internal microprocessor that is controlled (via Ethernet) by
PrestoDR. The latter sends commands, reads statuses, prepares the detector for an
exposure, synchronizes the X-ray pulse of the generator with the FPD and controls the
image readout and preparation of the detector for the next exposure. A minimal time lapse
is necessary between consecutive exposures (typically 11 seconds). The image readout is
by Ethernet communications.
The PIXIUM Portable detector package is split into two devices: the “Detector Front-End”
(PIXIUM FE 3543 pR or “FE” herewith) and the “Docking Station” (PIXIUM DS 3543 pR
or “DS” herewith). The communication between FE and DS (both for data and control) are
managed through a WiFi link, or using an optional electric backup cable.
16 System Description
Caution
Avoid placing the Pixium FE 3543pR or the PIXUM DS 3543pR too close to
life-supporting devices (see IEC60601-1-2 version 2001).
2.3.3 Bucky
The bucky houses the detector. It comprises of a front cover, a back cover and a door that
provides access to the grid. Each detector type has its bucky designed for it. The bucky is
suitable for use within a patient environment.
The bucky houses the grid and the AEC Ionization Chambers along with internal electric
circuits. These electric circuits support the detector and AEC while providing
communication signals to the PrestoDR system.
In the Optimum configuration, Thales provides the bucky devices as ordered by the
integrator. Thales supports both a Wall stand bucky and a Table bucky.
Since the Pixium 4143 FPD has a rectangular shape, the Thales bucky for this FPD enables
both the Portable and Landscape orientation of the FPD inside the bucky. The orientation
must be decided at the time of ordering and cannot be changed in the field.
System Description 17
The Thales bucky for Pixium Portable 3543 features a pull-out tray, supporting both
Portrait and Landscape positioning, with smooth and safe rotation. In the Wall stand bucky,
the FPD does not need to be removed from the tray for rotation. It also features an optional
in-bucky FPD battery recharge module.
2.3.4 AEC
PrestoDR can be operated either in AEC (Automatic Exposure Control) mode, or in
“manual” mode. The AEC mode is preferred not only because it facilitates a more relaxed
work of the operator, but also mainly because it leads to a steady, repeatable controlled
operation of the system. After calibrations and running in, the system will deliver
consistently high quality images.
To enable the AEC mode, PrestoDR uses three Ion Chambers assembled in a single box.
These are installed in each of the FPD’s housings. The Ion Chambers collect X-ray
radiation and when sufficient exposure has been attained, the Ion Chambers trigger the
generator to terminate the exposure.
The Ion Chambers can be activated in automatic mode as determined by the APR protocol
or they can be manually selected at any time.
The calibration of the AEC is done for different “equivalent film speeds”. The higher the
speed, the lower the dose at which the exposure will be cut off by the AEC.
2.3.5 Grid
PrestoDR uses high density, fixed grids. They must be handled with due care. When
removed from the detector housing, they should be carefully stored.

9.2 Unplug gland. Support the cable and make sure you are not pulling on it.
Pulling on it can disconnect the internal cable connection.
Cable
12. Connect the SAPM built in cable to the SAPM Adapter Board. Reconnect the 2 jack post
screws that were just taken off.
WARNING!
Do not power the PrestoDR system before completing the installation procedure!!
Do not open the inner plastic bag before allowing sufficient acclimatization time.
The acclimatization time is typically 4 hours. It is recommended to remove the
detector from the two cardboard boxes during this time – however, do not under,
any condition, open the sealed protective bag during this time. Take care not to
apply excessive shocks to the shipping containers even if empty.
The SAPM module inside the DS (optionally: and inside the bucky) enables charging
the Front End (FE) battery. When the FE is placed inside the FE’s front flap, it is
automatically detected and the SAPM internally unfolds its contact pins to charge the
FE’s battery. When the user holds the FE’s handle, the SAPM will retract the contact
pins so that the FE can safely be removed from the front flap.
When the system power is disconnected, the DS and the bucky are unable to retract
the contact pins when the FE is removed. Do not remove the FE from the DS when
the DS power is disconnected to avoid damaging the contact pins.
Status LEDs:
Two shock sensors are incorporated in the FE and visible when the
battery cover is opened. Those shock sensors are calibrated in such a
way that they are triggered to a red colour if the FE was submitted to a
shock corresponding to a 70 cm drop height or higher. Thales does not
guarantee the performance of the detector in any case if one of those
sensors is red
When the docking station power is disconnected, the DS is unable to retract the
contact pins when the FE would be removed. So do not remove the FE from the DS
when the DS is disconnected to avoid damaging the contact pins.

Execute this section only when the previous section (Monitor Calibration using the
Colorimeter device, number 9.7.2) cannot be carried out.
Open the SMPTE3k.bmp image residing in S:\patterns (double click on the image).
The gray scale is shown as a series of squares in the center of the image that range from
black (0%) to white (100%) in a semi-rectangle.
Each of the 0% and 100% squares (see red arrows on image) contain smaller squares inside
them that represent signal level steps of 5% and 95%, respectively (marked with dashed red
rectangles). The brightness and contrast of the monitor are adequately set if the 5% squares at
both ends of gray scale are equally visible.
Adjust the Contrast to a level so that the 95% square inside the 100% white box is just
noticeable (human eye contrast is more sensitive to contrast at higher luminance).
Adjust the Brightness to a level so that the 5% square inside the 0% black box is just
noticeable.
Repeat until both boxes are just noticeable.
Be aware that it may be difficult to adjust your monitor to show both of these inner squares
perfectly and equally. Most video monitors perform better in showing the 95% square than
the 5% square. However, you might see if reducing ambient light improves the visibility of
the 5% square.
In each corner of the image as well as in the very center, inspect the 6 squares filled with
varying widths of alternating black/white horizontal and vertical lines. The spatial resolution
(linearity) and aliasing (distortion) of your monitor are within acceptable limits if you are
able to differentiate all the lines, from wide to narrow (6 pixels, 4 pixels, and 2 pixels) and
both horizontally and vertically.

11.5 PIXIUM PORTABLE DETECTOR MAINTENANCE
11.5.1 Front End Battery Calibration
During the product’s operation, loading and unloading of the battery affects its
storage capacity and its accuracy. The maximum allowed accuracy tolerance is 10%.
When the battery reaches its 30%, it is considered that the battery needs to be
recalibrated. It will normally occur every 500 recharge cycles.
When reached, PrestoDR application will automatically turn on the icon at the
bottom of the screen.
Once recalibrated, the battery will recover its optimum load capacity and best
accuracy on remaining load calculation.
The calibration consists of a sequence of full unloads and loads, it is done internally
by the detector level. The calibration process takes a few hours, therefore it is
recommended to run it during the night (when the room is free).
To run the Calibration utility, Open the PrestoDR Calibration application and run
Start Battery Calibration from the Installation menu.
Maintenance 253
11.5.3 Charging module (SAPM) contact pins replacement
It is recommended to execute the contact replacement every 2 years with a
flexibility of 5 months.
It is necessary to have a flat-nose plier.
Contact replacement is an operation that must be done with a great care and
carefully to warranty a long lifetime to the module. Do not apply sudden stress
during the contact replacement.
It is very important to keep out of water projections on the module.
1. Install the front-end detector into the docking station or charging bucky (this
depends on which SAP you want to replace) and recharge it. Switch off the
docking station or the charging bucky power supply as soon as the module is in
charging position
2. Remove the front end detector carefully.
3. Open the plastic bag of the maintenance kit and unstick the protective liner

The surface to be attached to must be clean i.e without dust, release agents,
processing oils and grease.
• Be sure that the plate fits in the detector location with the protective liner of
adhesive.
• Unstick the adhesive protective liner of the plate thanks to the tongue.
• Place the plate in its location quickly with a hand pressure on the entire plate
surface to obtain at least 1 Kg.cm². The adhesive power is total after a drying
time of 24 hours.
Be sure that the expiration date indicated on the identity label is not obsolete (cf
§1.2). If it is the case, do not use it!
NOTE
When using the Portable FPD out side of a bucky, contact
may be made between FPD housing and patient’s body.
Always clean the FPD before using the FPD for a new
patient.
Thales recommends wrapping the Portable FPD using a disposable plastic bag
(which is X-ray transparent) in order to prevent infection by virus or bacteria.

12 Troubleshooting and System Diagnostics
12.2 Troubleshooting
The following sub-sections provide information on troubleshooting and workarounds for the
PrestoDR system.
12.2.1 Capture
The Capture function is a very powerful tool for servicing the PrestoDR system. It enables three
features:
• FTP Report (Section 12.2.1.1)
• Obtain Last Acquisition Data (Section 12.2.1.2)
• Remote system access (Section 12.2.1.3)
Capture button
Clicking on the Capture button will open the following dialog box, enabling selection of the
desired function.
1 Select the Backup Destination (FTP Server/hard Disk/USB Device) by checking the selected
destination. NOTE: When operating the Capture feature, the acquisition is not allowed and the
X-ray ready button turns red.
2 Click on “Capture/Report” to backup the files or “Cancel” to close the FTP dialog box.
The Capture operation backs up all the files that were defined in the “Backup Options”
checkbox into a Zip file and uploads the file to the FTP server, or to the alternate selected
destination.
3 In order to send an email, set the “Capture Address To List” SSPM (Maintenance Email) to
the desired address. You can also set an address as CC, by setting the “Capture Address CC
List” SSPM. See the following picture:
The Obtain Last Acquisition Data function is used for service purpose.
It gets internal system data from the last acquisition and stores into a predefined folder. All the
data concerning the last acquired image: raw image, all reference files, corrected image, log file,
initialization files, and more. The operator should use this function only when specifically
requested by the local service personnel.
After selecting this feature, the following message will appear. Press OK to confirm.
