CAUSES OF DEPRESSION AMONG THE YOUTH IN THE

I. INTRODUCTION

Depression, is a common and serious medical illness that negatively

affects the youths nowadays. It is a illness that can affect the way you think

and how you act. It also causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in

activities once enjoyed. It can also lead to a variety of a emotional and

physical problems and can decrease persons ability function at work and

at home.

There are different types of depression. And I just listed two types

of it, it is the Major Depression and the Bipolar Disorder. But there are more

types that I didn’t listed yet. The symptoms for each can range from

relatively minor through to severe.

According to Mayo Clinic Org., depression causes a variety of

issues such as brain chemistry which can occur brain chemicals that carry

signals to other parts of your brain and body. And when the time that

chemicals are abnormal or impaired, the function of nerve receptors and

nerve systems changes and its leads to depression. Another causes of

depression is early childhood trauma, it happens during childhood, such as

physical or emotional abuse, or loss of a parent may causes changes in the

brain that makes a person more susceptible to depression. Youths are the

main victim or the affected one of depression. Because according to

suicide.org, they take their own life every 100 minutes because of depression.

Family problem, school problem, personal problem and other undefined

problem is the cause why there are teens that’s been depressed.

Approximately 2 percent of teens experience depression before they reach

adulthood, and between 1 to 15 percent suffer from symptoms at anytime.

When they are depressed, it can feel like you’ll never get out

from a dark shadow. However, even the most severe depression is treatable.

So, if your depression is keeping you from living the life you want to, don’t

hesitate to seek help.

From therapy to medication to healthy lifestyle changes, there are many different treatment

options available. Of course, just as no two people aare affected by depression in exactly the

same way, neither is there a “one size fits all” treatment to cure depression. What works for one
person might not work for another. By becoming as informed as possible, though, you can help

you overcome depression, feel happy and hopeful again, and reclaim your life.
II. BODY

Depression affects how people think, feel and act. Depression makes it

more difficult to manage from day to day and interferes with study, work and

relationships. A person may be depressed if for more than two weeks they

have felt sad, down or misearable most of the time or have lost interest or

pleasure in most of their usual activities and have also experienced several of

the signs and symptoms across atleast three of the categories in the list below.

Its important to note every one experiences some of these symptoms from time to

time and it may not necessarily mean a person is depressed will have all of these

symptoms. A person with depression may feel sad, misearable, unhappy, irritable,

overwhelmed, guilty, frustrated, lacking in confidence, indecisive, unable to

concentrate and always been disappointed. Also a person with depression may

experience being tired all the time. Feeling sick and run down, frequent headaches,

stomach or muscle pains, a churning gut, sleep problems, loss or change of appetite

and significant weught loss or gain. Depression is a condition that affects many

people and can lead to serious actions such as self harm and suicide. However, there

are successful ways to treat the condition if people seek out help. depression

incidents of unusually elevated mood referred to as mania while it is severe or

hypomania while it is less severe. There is also Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD),

a major kind of depression that occurs frequently in periods with low natural

sunlight. It is characterized by depression cset during the winter months. Generally,

the depression subsides during summer and spring (Rohan, et.al. 2004). Another
type of depression is postpartums depression which refers to the depression of a

mother/father that takes place following the birth of their child (Torpy 2010).

Alphaber Hendrich and Cohen (1998) explain that postpartum depression is much

more severe than the “babyblues” that numerous women go through after they give

birth. (1.) Depression is more than feeling sad, everyone feels sad occasionally about

depression different things, and not just young people. But when we talk about

depression, we’re talking about something that’s much more serious than just

being sad. Its when a person feels a sadness to severe that it interferes with

their daily life and causes symptoms such as loss of appetite, sleeping issues,

loss of concentration and/or low energy levels. If any of these symptoms last

longer than two weeks, there’s probably something more serious going on

than just feeling sad. Sometimes, talking about depression isn’t enough,

talking with friends and family is a great way to deal with the day to day ups

and downs of life. But, when it comes to depression things are bit more

complicated. (2.) Depression is an illness that often requires treatment from

professionals trained to deal with it’s causes and symptoms. Talking about

how you feel with a trusted friend or family member may help in the short

term, but the seriousness of depression shouldn’t be ignored. Doctors,

psychologists and psychiatrists can provide treatments and self-management

strategies, which your family can’t do. (3.) Depression can affect anyone at
anytime, while it’s true that depression can start following a tough period,

such as bad breakup or the loss of a job. It’s not always the case. Depression

can develop due to other factors, such as genetics or chemical imbalances that

occur in the brain or negative thinking patterns. This is why depression can

affect anyone at anytime, regardless of what’s going on in their life. (4.)

Getting help can really be hard, depression can make a person feel

completely helpless and drain them of the energy they need to ask for help. If

you’re worried about a friend or a loved one, you can offer support by

encouraging them to speak to a health professional or an adult they trust. If

they’re not able to do it on their own, ask for their permission to talk to an

adult they trust on their behalf. If they refuse, and you’re still really

concerned, consider talking to an adult you trust, such as a teacher, parent or

school counselor.
III. CONCLUSION

Teen depression isn’t a weakness or something that can be

prove/overcome with will power – it can have serious consequences

and requires long-term treatment. For most teens, depression symptoms

ease with treatment such as medication and psychological counseling.
