MODULE TITLE: INTRODUCTION TO MATERNAL-INFANT HEALTH

The Family and Culture

INTRODUCTION: Childbirth does not occur in a vacuum. Attitudes and beliefs about
pregnancy are shaped by many influences and affect the perception and actions of persons
who may seek care during the childbearing cycle. The licensed nurse’s personal values,
legal obligations, and boundaries may also influence her/his practice of nursing.

GOAL STATEMENT: Upon completion of this module, the student nurse will be able to
develop an appreciation for the individual person and family recognizing a wide variety of
acceptable life styles. Additionally the student nurse will be able to discuss legal and ethical
issues related to maternity nursing.

UNIT OBJECTIVES: The student nurse will:


1. Score 77% or above on the computer exam.
2. Apply knowledge gained in the classroom to the clinical setting.

ENABLING OBJECTIVES: The student nurse will:


1. Define and be able to discuss the following terms:

infant mortality rate assault biological family


maternal mortality negligence legal family
rate malpractice nuclear family
maternity nursing ethics extended family
standard of care morals blended family
informed consent moral dilemma cultural context
implied consent
battery

2. Evaluate contemporary issues and trends in maternity and women’s health


nursing
3. Describe sociopolitical issues affecting the care of women and infants.
4. Analyze legally and ethically charged issues in maternal-infant care and how the
student’s personal values may influence nursing care delivered.
5. Identify and describe the key characteristics of various family forms.
6. Explain the functions carried out by a family for the well-being of its members
and society.
7. Relate the role and impact of culture on childbearing families.
8. Identify culturally based health care practices that may influence childbearing
families.
DIRECTIONS AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
1. Read Lowdermilk, et.al., Chapters 1, 2 & 12
2. Answer and study the Enabling Objectives.
3. Take computer test over assigned chapters according to class schedule.
