Rift Pre-Review
GROTON, Conn. – Recently, I was inducted into a beta testing
event for a new Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game
(MMORPG) slated to be released in March of this year. The beta
testing took place from Friday through Sunday, (although they
have held, four (I think) beta events before, that I wasn’t invited
to) so how I speak of the game is based on three days of gameplay
alone.
Anywhoozles. The game is called Rift. (It ‘was’ called, Rift:
Planes of Telara, but I think the makers (Trion Worlds) figured
out that their lore is less-than-iconic and more-than-forgettable,
and renamed it in good judgement). The gameplay however, is
awesome enough to make me addicted in such a way, that I was
physically having withdrawals from not being able to play it.
Speaking of addiction, the game’s interface and “talent trees”
are immediately reminiscent of World of Warcraft’s(WoW), and
rightly so. While a chief complaint from the hardcore-WoW-hat-
ers league (pretty sure that exists), the reason the interface is so
similar is seemingly to lower the entry barrier for new players.
The second complaint is that it feels too much like Warhammer
Online (but, I loved Warhammer Online (before the company
went bankrupt (there’s only 4 playable servers left up (it’s really
a sad thing)))). But Rift seems to be fusing the best elements of Photo by STC(SS) David Sissel
both games.
At first glance, Rift seems to be wrapped in a bittersweet point, FALL RIVER, Mass. - Smile for the camera! Staff and students of USS Lionfish Class 11060/11070 pause for a class photo topside.

Rift operates in a very familiar manner, when it comes to level-

ferent, are a few elements that give the game a very dynamic feel,

So, Soul Trees. Become a Warrior, you get three empty talent
trees. You can place a number of different “Souls” into those talent
trees, allowing you to mix and match the way your Warrior oper-

sidekick, I can do that. For a little more offensive versatility, I
could toss in the dual wielding “Paragon” soul, and add elemental
