SPINDLE CARE
WARM UP

Do not apply load to a cold electric spindle. Run the spindle at 9,000 rpm for 10 minutes or until the
spindle bearing supports reach 98 degrees Fº (human body temp.). This allows bearings, supports, and
shafts to reach the designed dimensions. Applying load to a cold spindle will cause premature failure to
bearings.
TOOLING

Keep tools sharp to reduce forces, heat, and to maintain cut quality. Monitor increases in electric current
to the spindle to detect loss of tool sharpness. Heat generated from tools can overheat bearing grease,
evaporates essential components, and lessen bearing life. Maximum bearing temperature of bearing
supports is 150 degrees Fº. Access heat will cause tool holders to jam in automatic tool change spindles.
Be sure all spindle sensors operate to avoid damage. CAUTION: All Colombo spindles are designed to
accept only ISO or HSK tool holder. BT tool holders are not interchangeable.

Use only balanced tools and tool holders. Rebalance all tools after each sharpening. Vibration from
unbalanced tools can rapidly destroy bearings. The balance standard is 1.0g (ANSI 1940/I).

Replace any worn, scratched, or deformed tool holders and collets with new items to prevent tool slip
(heat) and imbalance from run-out. Consider optional vibration sensors now available.

MAINTENANCE
CLEANING

Keep spindle body, fans, and airways clean to allow the cooling systems to function
correctly. Keep tool tapers, shafts, and collets scrupulously clean. Collet life is usually
<700 hours. Minor contamination can cause tool misalignment, out of balance, tool slip,
and poor quality cuts. Normal wear life is <700 hours. Tool slip leads operators to
over-tighten collet nuts and damage threads.

COOL DOWN

Allow cooling systems (fan, compressed air or liquid) and bearing pressurization (if fitted)
to run for 10 minutes after stopping work. This minimizes condensation and minimizes
contaminants being drawn into the bearings supports.

Spindle Selection Guide

The electric spindle is the heart of the machine tool. Correct selection is imperative for optimum machine
performance. This guide is to help you select the most suitable electric spindle for your application.
PRECISION DRIVE SYSTEMS offers Colombo electric spindles with over 150 types, 1/4 to 40 HP, up to
80,000 rpm. We feel sure we can meet your needs. PDS will help you select Electric Spindles, Frequency
Inverters, Tool Holders, and Tool Changers. Please call us if you would like assistance or quotations.

Your choice of electric spindles comes from considering interrelated variables: type of material, cuts, tools,
feed rates, and spindle speed. Detailed information is available to calculate these factors, but our guide
below may help.

APPLICATION
Here are some examples:

● Engraving or cutting plastic, plywood, or fiberboard up to 0.25” thick, below 500 in/minute feed rate,
use spindles around 1.5 to 5 HP up to 40,000 rpm. Their small size and weight also make them highly
maneuverable to suit small routers and robots with 5-axis or 3-D carving or trimming capabilities.

● Cutting wood, plastic, or aluminum using straight tools below 0.75” diameter at feed rates around
300 to 600 in/minute use spindles between 5 and 10 HP, 12,000 to 24,000 rpm.

● Heavy-duty demands including large profile tools over 1.0” diameter at high feed rates of 500 to
3,000 inches per minute in high-density materials eg phenolic, hardwood, aluminum, use higher power
spindles, 10 to 20 HP from 9,000 to 18,000 rpm.

COOLING

Cooling method for your Electric Spindle is based on its duty cycle. Medium and heavy duty cycle models
are available with each type of cooling.

● FAN cooling (RV series) is lowest cost but least efficient and results in the largest size spindle.

● LIQUID cooling (RA series) is most efficient but most expensive.

● COMPRESSED AIR cooling (RC series) is a good compromise between high efficiency and medium cost.

NOTES:
1. Cooling specifications are for values measured at the Electric Spindle INPUT OFFICE.
Pressure drop must be considered based upon length and configuration elbows of cooling line and air ducting.
2. Maintain Normal operating TEMPERATURE between 100 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit measured at the front bearing support.
Maintaining this temperature range will help maximize spindle bearing life and avoid premature bearing failure.
3. Spindle bearings will sound noisy during warm-up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit until thermal expansion reaches required preload.
4. Metric conversion factors: I/cf = 0.03531, I/gal = 0.2642, cf/cm = 35.33569

POWER CURVE

You can choose where power appears in the spindle’s speed range to best suit your cuts: more power at full
speed or at mid-range speeds.

CONSTANT TORQUE electric spindles suit applications where maximum cutting power is required near
maximum spindle speed. Their torque is constant, so power
increases steadily from zero at zero speed to full power at C o n s ta n t
POW ER
full speed. T o rq u e

CONSTANT POWER electric spindles provide flexibility

C o n s ta n t
For a wider variety of cutting tasks, They deliver more Power
Power at mid-range speeds but less power at maximum
Speed than constant torque spindles. Full power is
Available from say 12,000 to 24,0000 rpm for different
Materials, tools, and cuts.

SPEED
SPEED
Incorrect spindle speed is a common error in CNC machining. Generally, each material and cut has
an idea tool profile and cutting speed. Larger diameter tools require slower speeds. Spindle speed
and feed rate for a given cut must be balanced for best work quality, tool life, and spindle life. Speed
is controlled by a FREQUNECY INVERTER connected to the electric spindle. All spindles are 3
phase 60 cycle with infinitely variable speed from 0 to max rpm by correctly programming your
frequency inverter drive for each spindle.

FEED RATE

FEEDRATE CHART Feed rate must be balanced with spindle speed.

Changing one influences the other. Too slow feed
rates decrease tool life due to overheating and may
Flexible Plastics leave burn marks on the work. Heat builds in the tool
when not enough material is removed to cool the cut
Particle Board interface. Often, determining the best feed rate can
only come from trail and error. General feed rate

CUTTING ENTRY ANGLE

Feedrate
Keep down feed rates ,20% for the first 1 mm of
depth. Ramp down to full cut depth at an angle less 100%
than about 20 degrees. This minimizes axial force.

“Manual Tool Change” clamps the tool in a spring collet in a taper in the spindle
shaft. This choice offers excellent rigidity at low cost. The disadvantage is long tool
change times of 2-3 times.

“Automatic Tool Change” offers fast tool change (<5 seconds) and higher
productivity, but at a higher price. Tools are fixed in tool holders by collet. This
assembly is clamped in the electric spindle shaft by a drawbar and springs. Tool
holders are released by actuating the spindle drawbar against the clamping springs.
Manual
Setting tools occur off-line using jigs for accuracy and without interrupting
production.

ISO and HSK are the two most common tool holders used on CNC routers, robots,
and milling machines. ISO 30 is more popular than the smaller taper sizes ISO 25,
20, and 15. ISO 40 size is more common in high power, heavy duty, and metal
cutting applications. HSK 50 and HSK 63 tool holders provide better cutting accu-
racy and reliability. Their only disadvantage is higher cost than comparable ISO tool
holders. Their popularity is growing rapidly due to performance.

CAF 15 RELAY

CAF 15 Relay simplifies CNC interface with the ATC Electric

Spindle motion sensor. The sensor utilizes the CAF 15 Relay to
monitor spindle shaft rotation to avoid prematurely actuating the
non-rotating pneumatic cylinder push rod. This avoids friction
welding damage of the two shafts and costly repair.

that the global RMS value of vibration
provides the best indication of the intensity
of the vibration. This is explained by the fact
that a certain velocity level corresponds to a
