Importance of Plants to People

 Plants are very important to people because they are sources of their food, clothing
materials, medicine, fuel and oxygen.
 They are used as materials for building houses, and making furniture.
 They can also be used in making different products that are useful to people.
 They also beautify our surroundings.

Food
 Foods rich in carbohydrates, vitamins, and mineralscome from plants.

Materials for building houses and making furniture

 The trunk of trees give us lumber for building houses and making chairs, and
cabinets.
 Bamboos are also used as posts of houses and fences.

Medicines Kidz Lab Academy

 Some plants may be used to treat some body ailments.
 Plants whose roots, leaves, stems, flowers, or fruits that are used as medicines are
called medicinal plants.
Fuel
 Plants are good sources of fuel.
 Dead plants and fallen stems are used for firewood and charcoal.
 Coal and crude oil come from plants and animals that were buried.
 Crude oil is used to make gasoline and kerosene.

Clothing materials

 Plants, like abaca, pina, ramie, maguey and cotton may be used to make clothing
materials.

Oxygen
  Plants help make the air clean.
 They absorb carbon dioxide, the gas that we exhale, and us it in m aking their
food.

Beautification and decoration

 Plants make our surrounding beautiful.

 Flowering or decorative plants are planted in gardens or placed indoors.
 People use different kinds in parks and other places.

Making products

 Extracts from flowers, fruits, and stems of certain plants are added to perfumes
and beauty products.
 Large trees provide gums and resins which are used in making glue, wax, inks,
and paint.
 Latex, the gum from rubber trees, is used to make rubber for tires and other
products.
 Paper which is used for making books, boxes, and other things, come from wood
chips.
 Dye for coloring cloth also comes from various plant parts.

Taking Care of Plants

To make our plants healthy we must do the following tips on how to care for them.

Place the plants where they can get enough air and sunlight.
Protects plants from stray animals by building a fence around them.
Water the plants regularly.
Cut off dried stems and leaves.
Put enough fertilizer around the plants.
Protect newly transplanted seedlings from direct sunlight.
Use good soil for planting.
Loosen the soil around the plants to cultivate it.
