Welcome to

Kindergarten
Project Plan
By Emily Norvell
The Plan – Kindergarten Internship Days
▪ Kindergarten Internship Days are selected days close to the end of the
school year. Families are invited to sign up with a total of 5 Kindergarten
students per day. These occur in the morning from the start of the school
day to recess.
▪ One soon-to-be kindergarten student would be placed at each group table in
the classroom. Students at the tables are the mentors of the day assists the
students in directing the students through the activities.
▪ An email will be sent to families participating to learn about the flow of the
day and other important information. Families are suggested to bring
snacks for snack time.
▪ Families are welcome to stay, observe and participate.
Flow of the Internship Day
▪ Families are welcomed into the classroom 15 minutes before the first bell.
Families can explore the classroom and play before other students arrive.
Families are also able to ask questions and learn how the day will go.
▪ First bell rings and the kindergarten students enter the classroom. Students
begin by completing morning centres at the tables. There will be a number
of different activities. For example, play dough, tangrams, and beading.
▪ Students will then join as at the carpet for calendar, weather, and show-and-
tell. Students also participate in an energy break.
▪ Students then participate in a lesson. Examples include community circle,
reading a book and completing an activity or an art project.
Flow of the Internship Day Continued
▪ Once the activity is over, we would move into washing our hands and then
come back to class to eat a snack. If families did not bring a snack interns
are welcome to continue to play at the building structures area with activity
tubs or read. This is when the interns can ask the kindergarten students
questions about kindergarten and the teacher can talk to the families.
▪ Interns can participate in getting ready to go outside which would be practice
for getting ready to go home.
▪ Once the bell rings, the kindergarten students say goodbye to the interns
and go outside the play. Families are welcome to go play with the
kindergarten students or stay and ask questions and play in class until the
end of recess.
▪ Families will receive the welcome to Kindergarten Brochure.
Preparing the Kindergarten Students
▪ Conversations/community circle about being a mentor the interns. This
includes brainstorming key qualities that mentors should have. Some acting
out these situations.
▪ Conversations/community circle about questions that they had when they
entered kindergarten and strategies that could help them.
▪ I would love to create a Welcome to Kindergarten video if possible, just
welcoming the interns into the classroom . The video could play in the
background in the morning for families to watch. Interns could see videos of
the students welcoming them to class so they can recognize some of their
faces and names.
