Lesson Plan – Tectonic Plate Boundaries (Les frontières de plaques tectoniques)

Before the lesson: Review previous class “Tectonic plate movements” by writing questions on
board and play a Quizlet or Kahoot to review vocabulary.
 Differentiation:
o Allow students to discuss questions before the teacher asks for answers allows
for think time and give shy students the opportunity to tell somebody what they
remember.
o Games are a different and fun way to interact with vocabulary

1) Hook: What causes mountains to form, earthquakes to shake and volcanoes to erupt? Class
discussion
 Differentiation:
o Allow students to speak in groups and share what they already know
before asking students for answers

2) Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMotO_iyo-
I&list=PLLKquSi64nRYtzJyTa_Deio_JKZSe2Q3h&index=58&t=94s
 Differentiation:
o Watch the video in class, but pause at certain points to clarify, explain
vocabulary, ask questions
o Fill in the vocabulary glossary with any words that students may find
difficult.

3) Notes: Students fill in notes on boundary organizer:

4) Apply: Go back to tectonic plate map (given in previous lesson) and add data about the plate
boundaries. Label each type of plate boundary around BC and a choice of 2 other regions with
frequent seismic activity/volcanoes around the world. Locate and describe major and/or recent
seismologic events in the areas you’ve chosen. Explain what happened to cause the event.
 Differentiation
o Students work in groups chosen by the teacher based on their learner
profiles. There are also separate desks for students who require a quiet
place to think and work.
o Variety of sources for information (e.g. textbook, internet, science
magazines)
o Choice of regions to focus on and choice of event to research

5) Discuss as a class the types of tectonic plate boundaries near BC. Groups choose one event
(earthquake or volcano) and give a brief description and explanation to the class.
 Differentiation:
o Groups can choose one person to speak
