Water Balance and Leak

Detection Technician

Description:
The role of the water balance and leak detection technician is to assist the inspector of
the water loss and leak detection section in carrying water balance and leak detection in
the district metered areas (DMAs) in the entire network and assist in attending to
complaints of leaks as and when required by the engineer.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assist the inspector and support him in carrying out all his
duties pertaining to water balance and leak detection in the
selected DMA.
• Program, install, deploy and retrieve, download, display noise
logger results.
• Properly plan the route for meter reading and noise logger
deployment campaign to reach the destination and complete
the task within the shortest possible time.
• Physically carry and transport the leak detection equipment for
site use and deployment, ensure their security and clean and
maintain them in serviceable conditions after completing field
work.
• Performs any other duties relating to water balance and leak
detection work as instructed by the inspector or supervisor.
• Carry out all activities of water balance, leak detection and
attending to complaints in accordance to the procedures and
flow chart as set out by the engineer and to complete them
satisfactorily within the required period.
• Raise and follow up work orders raised through JD Edwards
ERP system.
• Assist the inspector to prepare excel sheet and drawings for
the proper readings of the customer’s meters in each DMA for
water balance purpose.
• Possess skills in quick reading of all types of meters and use
of all the available leak detection equipment in the WLS
section such as noise loggers, correlating loggers, ground
microphone, flow and pressure data loggers, electronic
listening sticks and etc.
• Assist the inspector in preparing a water balance for each
DMA on an excel sheet and in submitting report and findings to
the supervisor.
• Download the data recorded by the noise loggers and submit
to the inspector for analysis of possible leaks.
• Assist the inspector in finding suspected leaks and pinpointing
them.
• Report on all invisible and visible leaks found.
• Report on all faulty meters, unmetered customers and illegal
connections.
• Assist the inspector to submit the report on key performance
indicators in terms of the number of meters read, number of
logger deployed and retrieved, and number of visible and
invisible leaks found and repaired per month, and volume of
water saved.
• Compiles notes, submit reports, sketches, and records of
meters read, noise loggers installed, connections checked,
visible and invisible leaks found and repaired, and all other
work performed.
• Performs other duties relating to water balance and leak
detection work as directed by the engineer, supervisor and
inspector.
Qualification Requirements:
• Technical Diploma in an engineering discipline.
Job Experience
• New engineering diploma holder can be considered
Work Environment
• 90% Site work, 10% office work.
Other Significant Requirements:
• Possess State of Qatar Driving License.
• Shall be in the age group of 21-40 years and shall be available
on call after duty hours
• Ability to work with the computer and have knowledge of the
latest version of the basic computer software’s for submitting
reports.
• Has a keen attitude for operating leak detection and
associated equipment and able to quickly acquire skills in
using and maintaining new leak detection equipment with
computer interface.
• Work effectively with others as part of a team, build
consensus, and maintain cooperative working relationships.
• Has reasonable command of English Language and be able to
read, write, and speak in the language. Able to read and
understand the operating manual for the equipment so as to
use them effectively and maintain them in satisfactory working
conditions Physically fit and able to work long hours in harsh
weather conditions when necessary.
• Has general awareness of Health & Safety requirements.
• Quick in learning new technical skills while on the job training
for leak detection and meter reading and submit results on
excel sheet and PowerPoint.
• Good hearing capabilities with no hearing defects.
• Keen attitude for operating leak detection and associated
equipment and able to quickly acquire skills in using and
maintaining new leak detection equipment with computer
interface. Read and understand thoroughly the operating and
maintenance manual for all equipment’s.
• Work effectively with others as part of a team, build
consensus, and maintain cooperative working relationships.
• Has general awareness of Health & Safety requirements.
• Able to work under pressure and emergency situation.
• Ability to read and understand technical drawings of water
network and pipe layout, flow charts, O& M manuals and
procedures.
• Work effectively with others as part of a team, build

• Performs other duties inclusive of downloading of information
from the field devices such as smartphones, digital
photographs, GIS information, noise loggers records, data
loggers record of pressure and flow, customers’ consumption
stored in handheld computers, leak information stored in field
computers, and any other data relating to water balance and
leak detection work as directed by the engineer and
supervisor. Hence he is expected to perform such duties
whether in the office or at the accommodation during office
hours
