and saw that many soldiers were malnourished. She asked the chef to prepare a special
dish which would provide balanced nutrition. The chef fried rice in ghee, without washing,
to give it a nutty flavour and prevent it from clumping. Then, some meat, spices, and
saffron were added to it before cooking the mix over a wood fire. This is how the Mughal
Biryani was created.
Haji Biriyani is the best of its kind. It is delicious! It was named after Haji Mohammad
Hossain. In 1939, he opened a roadside food corner in Nazira Bazar, Old Dhaka. Later

“Gather some wood,” Major Rafique send a radio message to all his soldiers.
It may seem like an ordinary message to the Pakistani soldiers but to the Bengali’s it
meant something entirely different. It meant that they should prepare for war. The
soldiers were patiently waiting for the next instruction.
Major Rafique was standing on a hill in Chittagong that night. He was lost in his own
thoughts.
Major Rafique thought to himself. “Am I trying to do the impossible?”
His thoughts were interrupted as an auto-rickshaw climbed up the hill and was moving
towards him. The auto-rickshaw stopped and two army officers came down from it- one
of them was Lt. Colonel M.R. Chowdhury. He immediately recognized who they are.
Major Rafique greeted them and they moved under a tree nearby.
“You should not do anything now,” the Colonel told him in a low voice.
“Why?” Major Rafique enquired.
“They won’t do anything serious against us. But if you take any action now, you are
going to ruin everything.”
Major Rafique picked up his radio and told his men to cancel what he said before- to
stop gathering wood.
“Aren’t you wrongly trusting them?”, Major Rafique asked. “They will betray your trust.”
“Even so the extreme steps you are prepared for cannot be taken merely on
guesswork,” said the Colonel.

question.
- After the split, the Dassler brothers
a. were filled with fondness for each other
b. became the biggest competitors of each other
Brotherly Love??
Adidas and Puma have been two of the biggest names in sports shoe manufacturing for over half
a century.
Since 1928 they have supplied shoes for Olympic athletes, World Cup-winning football heroes,
Muhammad Ali, hip-hop stars and rock musicians who are famous all over the world. But the story
of these two companies begins in one house in a small town in Germany.
Adolph and Rudolph Dassler were the sons of a shoemaker. They loved sport but complained that
they could never find comfortable shoes to play
in. Rudolph always said ‘you cannot play sports
wearing shoes that you’d walk around town
with’. So, they started making their own. In 1920
Adolph made the first pair of athletic shoes with
spikes, produced on the Dasslers’ kitchen table.
On 1st July 1924 they formed a shoe company,
Dassler Brothers Ltd. The company became
successful and it provided the shoes for
Germany’s athletes at the 1928 and 1932
Olympic Games.
65 Unit 7
But in 1948 the brothers argued. No one knows exactly what happened but family members have
suggested that the argument was about money or women. The result was that Adolph left the
company. His nickname was Adi and using the first three letters of the family names, Dassler, he
founded Adidas.
Rudolph relocated across the river Aurach and founded his own company too. At first, he wanted
to call it Ruda, but he eventually called it Puma, after the wild cat. The famous Puma logo of
jumping cat has survived until now.
After the big split of 1948 Adolph and Rudolph never spoke to each other again. Since then their
companies have been in competition. Both companies were for many years the market leaders,
though Adidas has always been more successful than Puma. By the 1970s new companies like
Nike and Reebok arrived to rival them.
The terrible family argument should really be forgotten, but ever since it happened, over fifty
years ago, the town has been split onto two. Even now, some Adidas employees and Puma
employees don’t talk to each other.
08 Read the passage and answer the following questions. Write NO MORE THAN
THREE WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER.

Pre-teach Vocabulary
03 Read the passage quickly and decide which statement is true about this
passage.
a. It’s about cowboys of Hollywood.
b. It’s about modern-day cowboys.
Twenty-first century cowboys
Cowboys have always had a romantic image. When
people first watched Hollywood films, being a cowboy
wasn’t a job. It was a life of adventure, freedom,
horses. It was a classic symbol of the United States of
America. In reality, the real American cowboys have
lived and worked here in the west and south-west of
the United States for over three centuries, long before
Hollywood. The adventure and romance have
disappeared but the hard work and long hours are the
same as they’ve always been.
No one knows how many cowboys are still
working. Maybe between ten and fifty
thousand. It’s also difficult to define a twenty-
first century cowboy. Surely it can’t be the big
cattle owners who do business with a seventy
billion-dollar beef industry? These modern
ranches use the latest technology and employ
accountants. But even some of the old
traditional cattle ranches make more money
nowadays by offering holidays to tourists; people come and stay for a holiday and live the
cowboy’s life (or a Hollywood version of it).
But even with technology and Hollywood romance, real cowboys still do the same job
they have done for years. The cattle still need to walk across huge plains and eat grass
many miles from the ranch. And so,
cowboys ride on horses to bring them
home. Cowboys work in the middle of
nowhere, in a place where you can’t make
a phone call because mobile phones don’t
work. Like the cowboys of the past, twenty-
first century cowboys still get up early on
freezing cold mornings and make breakfast
over an open fire. There is no Monday to
Friday, weekends off or paid holidays.
So why do men – because it is usually men
– choose this life? Pat Crisswell had a good
job with the government. He made good money but he didn’t like the city. He wanted to
do something different. So, one day, he gave up his job and moved to a ranch in Texas,
earning much less as a cowboy. He remembers his work colleagues in the city on the day
he left. They all thought Pat was crazy. But he wanted job satisfaction more than money.
75 Unit 8
Two brothers – Tyrel and Blaine Tucker – have lived
on ranches and worked with cows since they were
children. Their mother had a ranch in Wyoming. Last
winter, they looked after 2,300 cows. Every day from
December until April, they rode across nearly 100,000
acres of land with only the cattle, the horses, and each
other for company. Eighteen-year-old Tyrel Tucker
says, ‘It was fun. You get to be by yourself.’
Blaine has a large moustache and Tyrel is growing his.
They wear traditional cowboy clothes with the famous
hat and boots. You could do the same job in a baseball
cap and a truck but Tyrel and Blaine prefer the traditional cowboy culture: ‘It’s a real life
about you, your horse and the open country.’
04 Do the following statements agree with the claims of the writer in the passage.
Write YES / NO.
a. The image of cowboys created by Hollywood is very much different from the real
cowboys.
b. It is not easy to determine what being a modern cowboy means.
c. The cowboys work in some distant areas where mobile phone network may not be

d. People sometimes choose to be cowboys because they want something different in
