and refer to a pharmacist or other member of staff where appropriate.
• Carry out the monthly stock check of pharmacy Controlled Drugs (CDs); undertake authorised
destruction of expired Trust CDs with the Trust Authorised witness and act as witness for
pharmacists undertaking destruction of patients’ own CDs.
• Assist in daily dispensary housekeeping tasks as required by the lead technician, dispensary
services.
• Monitor and report stock discrepancies to the lead technician, dispensary services.

• Receive, label and accurately dispense prescriptions for inpatients, outpatients and discharge
patients using JAC. This includes taking a drug history from outpatients or their carers,
identifying any drug allergies or interactions or problems with the prescribed medicines.
• Working in the dispensary for outpatients. This involves: taking prescriptions from outpatients
and verifying their details; taking a current drug history from the patient, carer or parent. Give
out the medication and counsel patients on their medication use to promote concordance. This
includes the name of the medication, dosage, common side effects and administration details
including the use of devices. In addition, answer any queries or concerns a patient may have
about their medication or refer to a pharmacist if appropriate.
• Receive, label and dispense prescriptions for controlled drugs and unlicensed drugs and make
appropriate records.
• Collecting prescription charges. To take cash, card and cheque transactions from outpatients
and to use the pharmacy till according to the standard operating procedures.
• Receive drug charts and prescriptions from the inpatient and outpatient hatch and record details
on the PTS (prescription tracking system).
• Answer queries, both on the telephone and in person, with medical, nursing staff and patients
and seek help from a pharmacist when necessary.
• Assist the Deputy Dispensary manager to complete monthly audits for controlled drugs and
unlicensed drugs, investigating stock level discrepancies within the dispensary in line with
current procedures.
• Perform the stock check of the emergency cupboard ensuring correct temperature and medicine
expiry dates.
• Balance the till and the PDQ in the absence of senior dispensary staff and bank any monies.
• Remove any prepared prescriptions that have not been collected for one month and return to
stock/ destroy as necessary and complete appropriate paperwork in line with procedures.
• Supply stock controlled drugs, and related controlled stationery, to wards and departments.
• Perform Controlled Drug stock checks, to audit and report any discrepancies to the Dispensary
Manager or Deputy Dispensary Manager.
General
• Working in a customer focused manner with patients, nursing staff and other healthcare
professionals.
• Replenish stock drugs to a pre-set level, ensuring stock is correctly stored and expiry date
checked.
• Maintenance of an accurate fridge and local environment temperature recording.
• Authorise stock transfers from stores into dispensary following procedures and checking the
drug and quantity with the staff doing the transfer.
• Assist in maintaining accurate stock control including daily stock checks, expiry date checks
and to report inaccuracies.
• Disposal of expired pharmaceuticals according to procedures.
• To arrange disposal, or appropriate return into stock, of previously issued/dispensed items.
• Completion of additional duties such as issuing of ward stock and receipt of deliveries.
Additional training will be provided.
• To maintain a portfolio of Continuous Professional Development.
• Making a full contribution to the work of the dispensary without being asked and to take pride
in the overall performance of the team.
• Report any risk factors which are identified on the wards and in the department.
• Providing a level of service which meets established quality standards and requirements.
• Aware of the individual responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act and identify
and report, as necessary, any untoward incident, accident or the potentially hazardous
environment.
• Undertake any duties as may reasonably be expected by the Chief Pharmacist.
DISPENSARY
• Accurately dispense and issue prescriptions including controlled drugs
• Identify potential problems regarding the lack of availability of medicines for individual
prescriptions, seeking advice on suitable alternatives or agreed delivery timetable.
• Ensure medication is dispensed to meet agreed delivery times and to minimise waiting times
for patients.
• Receive prescriptions from hospital staff in accordance with dispensary procedures. Prioritise
prescriptions according to urgency. Inform ward staff of prescription progress where necessary.
• If required, ensure that the exemption status of patients is checked in order to accurately collect
prescription fees.
• Calculate prescription charges from Doctor’s own private patients as per procedures.
• Counsel patients regarding their medication regimes in order to ensure complete patient
understanding including benefits of their medication and possible side effects. These may be
patients with certain barriers, e.g. hearing problems, language issues.
• Deal with queries from patients and other hospital staff, referring complex issues to supervisor
or line manager.
• Effectively deal with patients who are discontented with aspects of the service e.g. waiting
times and refer to senior member of staff for resolution.
• Maintain high quality of data input of patient information into the pharmacy computer system
in order to ensure excellent labelling standards for dispensed medicines
• Ensure stock levels of all products are accurate and support the appropriate ordering of stock
through liaison with the buying office. Inaccuracies in all medicines should be investigated
before being referred to line manager without delay.
• Responsible for the maintenance of a specific area of the dispensary in order to make sure that
medicines are stored appropriately and in-date.
• Participate in the dispensing and maintenance of clinical trial medication; dispense mental
health prescription including Clozapine and local community hospitals and hospice.
• Housekeeping duties: Cleaning and tidying, checking and recording temperatures, psychiatric
cards, clear reception filling tray, match community TTO faxes, clear and dispose clinical and
