Date Week 7
Topic/Lesson Earth quake Hazards
 Introduction
 Definition of Earthquake
 Potential earthquake hazards
 Natural Signs of an Impending
Tsunami
 Effects of different earthquake hazard
 Different Earthquake Hazard Maps
 What to do Before, During and After
an Earthquake
Content Standards The learners demonstrate understanding
of…
Potential earthquake hazards:
1. Ground shaking
2. Ground rupture
3. Liquefaction
4. Earthquake-induced ground subsidence
5. Tsunami
6. Earthquake-induced landslide

Performance Standards The learners develop a family emergency

preparedness plan to guide them on what to
do before, during, and after an earthquake.
Learning Competencies The learners…
1. Identify various potential earthquake
hazards;
2. Recognize the natural signs of an
impending tsunami;
3. Analyze the effects of the different
earthquake hazards;
Specific Learning Outcomes Learners will be able to:
1.Identify various potential earthquake
hazards
2.Point with ease the natural signs of an
impending tsunami
3.Discuss the effects of different earthquake
hazards
4.Apply precautionary measures, before,
during, and after an earthquake
Time Allotment 4 hours and 30 minutes
Teaching Strategy Group discussion and Oral Recitation

LESSON OUTLINE
I- Introduction The group assigned will do the following:
 Opening prayer
 Recap for the day
Ask the class to share any experience regarding
earth quake and how will they define
earthquake in their own words.
II- Motivation Learners will share to the class their own
stories or experience related to earthquake.
III- Instruction/ Delivery What is an Earthquake- is the perceptible
shaking of the surface of the Earth, resulting
from the sudden release of energy in the earth’s
crust that creates seismic waves?

Fault- refers to a fracture, fissure or a zone of

weakness where movement or displacement has
occurred or may occur again; a fault is said to
be active fault if it has historical and
contemporary seismicity, has evidence of fault
slip based on displaced rocks or soil units of
know age and displaced land forms; an Active
fault is define as a Fault which has moved
within the last 10,000 years.

Potential Earthquake Hazards

Geologist explain that an earthquake is a type of
hazard that depends on the strength of seismic
activity, along with such factors as local
topographic and built features, subsurface
geology and ground water.
The following are different hazards that
normally result from the occurrence of an
earthquake:
1. Ground Shaking or Ground Motion-
the earth shakes with the passage of
earthquake waves which radiates energy
that had been stored in stressed rocks
and where released when a fault broke
and the rocks slipped to relieve the pent
up stressed.

2. Ground Surface Rupture- Surface

rupture is an offset of the ground surface
when fault rupture extends to the earth
surface.

3. Liquefaction- soil liquefaction is

phenomenon in which the strength and
stiffness of a soil is reduced by
earthquake shaking or other rapid
loading.

4. Earthquake- Induced ground

subsidence and lateral spreading-
subsidence or lowering of the ground
surface often occurs during earthquakes.

5. Tsunami – a tsunami also known as a

seismic sea wave is a series of waves in
a water body cause by the displacement
of a large volume of water. Generally, in
an ocean or a large lake.

6. Earthquake- Induced Landslides –

landslides are frequently triggered by
strong ground motion.
Natural Signs of an Impending Tsunami
1. Animal Behavior
2. Drawback

How drawback is formed

All waves have a positive and negative peak a

ridge and a trough. A drawback will occur as
the shoreline recedes dramatically, exposing
normally submerged areas.

Effects of Different Earthquake Hazards

Learners will read the 1990 Bauio City

Earthquake Page 35 to 36

Different Earthquakes Hazard Maps

Teacher will present the different Hazard map

picture to the learners. Learners will learn to
interpret each map by giving attention to the
color codes and scalar system

2 Earthquake – induce Landslide susceptible

4 Floods and Landslide Hazard Map

Earthquake

Before an Earthquake

IV- Practice Ask the learners of their idea on what are the
precautionary measures they know before,
during and after an earthquake. And share it to
the class
V-Enrichment Ask the learners based on what they have
learned so far, think of their home, what are the
possible impacts/ effects of the 5 earthquake
hazards to their home.
VI – Evaluation Learning insight
