Yemen

This is a 3x conflict, a “War within war” for, as a Saudi prince edges away from Yemen, his allies
feud; the baddies are the Iran-linked Houthis (Shi’ite Houthis rounded up the country’s 50
remaining Jews and forced them to turn over property and leave country as part of 'ethnic
cleansing' efforts).

The goodies are feuding, as noted in this extended discussion:

U.N. and Arab powers fear wider war in Yemen after separatists declare self-rule
in the south - A declaration of self-rule by the most influential Yemeni southern
separatist group has triggered concerns that Yemen’s conflict could escalate just
as the United Nations is seeking a nationwide cease-fire to prevent the spread of
the novel Covid-19. The United Arab Emirates, the separatists’ main backer, said
Monday that it opposes the declaration and urged the group to honor a peace
deal it signed last year with the internationally recognized government affirming
shared control of the south. Saudi Arabia — which, along with the UAE, leads a
regional Sunni Muslim coalition fighting in Yemen — called for the separatists to
reverse their move, describing it as “an escalatory action.” While the primary, and
best-known, conflict pits the Saudi-led coalition against northern rebels known as
Houthis, the battle for the strategic port city of Aden and other areas in the south
involves two allies within the coalition. The STC, which favors splitting Yemen’s
south from its north, has long tangled with the Yemeni government, ruled for
decades by northerners. The group and the UAE disapprove of Hadi’s alliance with
al-Islah, an influential Islamist party. The Saudis view al-Islah as part of Yemen’s
political fabric. But the UAE and the STC oppose any role for al-Islah because of
its links to the Muslim Brotherhood, a regional political Islamist movement that
the Emiratis and other Arab rulers have labeled terrorists.

As usual, the U.N. is worthless, as Secretary-General Antonio Guterres removed a Saudi Arabia-
led military coalition from an annual U.N. blacklist, several years after it was first named and
shamed for killing and injuring children in Yemen; violence surged after a Covid-19 truce expired.

Saudi Arabia has intercepted explosives-laden Houthi drones in its airspace; they had targeted
civilians in Khamis Mushait, Aseer province, said Col Turki Al Malki (spokesman of the Coalition to
Restore Legitimacy in Yemen), who added this attack was the 357th Houthi drone to be intercepted
and destroyed.

Saudi-led alliance in Yemen said explosive boats were destroyed in Red Sea; yet, it seems Saudi
leverage is not enough to achieve peace in Yemen.

Superimposing intrigue, Turkey accused the United Arab Emirates of bringing chaos to the Middle
East through its interventions in Libya and Yemen, allegations which are likely to inflame tensions
between the regional rivals; this may explain why a Yemen Donor Conference Fell Short of its goal.
