1.0 INTRODUCTION

The LPI X-Ray to CR Protocol Bridge device normally runs in an unattended mode. However, it must
be configured properly to communicate with the client’s X-Ray machine prior to being used in the
production environment.

Configuration can be performed at the factory or by an installation technician at the client site. The
installation technician requires the following tools to perform the initial set-up:

• A personal computer (MS/Windows 2000 or XP);

• The LPI CR Bridge Configuration Utility Program (provided on CD);

• An LPI supplied serial cable that connects the PC to the Bridge device via an RS232 port;

It is also possible to troubleshoot communications problems encountered at the client installation by

using the same tools. The Bridge device saves diagnostic information within its memory. The LPI CR
Bridge Configuration Utility Program allows the installation technician to perform the following actions:

• Upload diagnostic information from the Bridge device into the PC;

• Save this information in a PC disk file. The resulting file is in a form that allows it to be e-
mailed to LPI technical support. It may also be printed and faxed.

The remaining document sections describe the procedure for configuring the Bridge product and for
using the troubleshooting tools.

The computer control program (hereafter called firmware) which resides within the Bridge device can
be updated with new firmware provided by LPI (for example, to provide new capabilities or to
accommodate changes in the operation of the CR Console device). The Bridge Configuration Utility
Program is used to perform such updates.

Note: The firmware update feature is only supported for CR Bridge units manufactured after June
of 2005 and containing firmware of revision level 2.0 or later.

2.0 READYING the DEVICE for CONFIGURATION

Before configuring the device, make sure that you have the correct Bridge model for the type of CR
Console device that will be connected to the Bridge. If you do not have the correct Bridge model or
do not know which model you need, contact LPI for assistance.

The LPI CR Bridge Configuration Utility Program must be installed on a PC (MS/Windows computer)
prior to attempting the configuration procedure described below. Installation is described later in this
document. There must be an available electrical outlet near the PC and a serial communications port
on the PC that is unused.

To place the Bridge device in its configuration mode, the technician must perform the following steps:

-1-
• Remove power by unplugging the Bridge device from its electrical outlet.

• Disconnect the serial cable which attaches to the X-Ray equipment at the Bridge device’s
connector.

• Disconnect the serial cable which attaches to the CR Console at the Bridge device’s
connector.

• Move the Bridge device to an area near to the PC (MS/Windows computer) on which the LPI
CR Bridge Configuration Utility Program has been installed.

• Connect one end of the LPI supplied serial configuration cable to the Bridge device’s CR
Console connector. Nothing should be attached to the X-Ray equipment connector.

• Connect the other end of the LPI supplied serial configuration cable to an unused serial port
on the PC (MS/Windows computer). Make sure you know what the serial port’s MS/Windows
name is (COM1, COM2, …) and that no software on the PC is currently using this port.

• Plug the Bridge device’s power plug into a near by electrical outlet.

• Run the configuration utility, as described in the next section.

3.0 RUNNING the CONFIGURATION UTILITY PROGRAM

After the previous set-up step has been performed, the installation technician runs the configuration
utility program as described below:

• Double-click the MS/Windows desktop icon (CR Bridge Settings) to start the configuration
utility program. You may also start the program using the MS/Windows Start button instead of
using the icon -- a start menu program group named LPI CR Bridge V300 includes a shortcut
to the utility program.

When the program is active, it will display a user interface with multiple screens called pages
(the Page tabs, which make individual screen pages visible, are located at the top edge of the
program’s screen. These tabs are labeled Bridge, X-Ray Unit, Firmware Update, Debug, and
About). Each screen page is viewed by clicking on its label tab.

• Click the Bridge page tab (if necessary) to make the page visible. The page displayed is that
shown below. This page appears by default when the program is first executed.

-2-
Note that the above screen image shows the program state after connection to the Bridge
device. When the program is first executed, the button is labeled Connect to Bridge and the
Firmware Version, Mfg. Date, and Model screen fields are not filled in with data from the
Bridge device.

• Specify the PC’s serial port to which the Bridge device is currently connected by clicking the
port name in the list shown labeled PC Port:. All serial ports available on the PC are shown in
this list. You may have different ports on your computer than are shown in the above
example.

• Click on the button labeled [Connect to Bridge] (this button’s label text will change to
Disconnect from Bridge when a connection is established). The screen field labeled Current
Status will display the text:

Connecting to Bridge Unit

while the connection is being established. If the Bridge unit has been properly connected and
powered up, the Current Status screen field will change several times, each change indicating
that a different type of information is being retrieved from the Bridge device. When all
information has been retrieved, the Current Status screen field will display the text:

-3-
Connected on COMx (where COMx is the name of your serial port)

The screen data fields which are labeled Mfg. Date, Firmware Version, and Model will be filled
in with the corresponding information which has been retrieved from the Bridge device.

• If the Bridge device is not connected to the PC properly or not powered on, you will see the
following text in a pop-up message:

You must click the [ OK ] button. Then connect the cable properly and turn the Bridge
device’s power off (remove the plug). Wait 10 seconds and plug the device back in to power it
up. The repeat the prior step (click the button labeled [Connect to Bridge]).

If you see other pop-up error indications, it may indicate that the serial port which you have
selected is currently in use by another program.

Once the configuration utility program has established a connection with the Bridge device, it is
possible to configure the X-Ray interface, to retrieve troubleshooting information, and to perform a
firmware update. These operations are described in the following sections of this document.

4.0 CONFIGURING the X-RAY INTERFACE

The following characteristics must be set in the Bridge device to describe its interface to the X-Ray
equipment:

• The vendor and model type of X-Ray Equipment;

If the program was installed to support only one X-Ray equipment vendor, that vendor is
automatically selected.

• The configuration of the serial port on which the X-Ray Equipment outputs its data to the
Bridge device. This includes the baud rate, character bit size, parity, and number of stop bits.
These values must match the corresponding values used by the X-Ray Equipment to output
settings data.

There is an additional parameter which may be changed -- the amount of time that must elapse after
the last X-Ray data character is received by the Bridge device. When this amount of time elapses
without any received data, the Bridge device considers all of the X-Ray data for the current exposure
to be received.

-4-
Note: Some X-Ray equipment transmits data with an explicit start-of-data character and an
explicit end-of-data character. For these devices, the elapsed time parameter is used to
define the maximum time after start-of-data that that is allowed to see the explicit end-of-
data character.

Typically, this time parameter is not changed – it is left at the default value. However it is possible to
lengthen the time interval in cases where the X-Ray Equipment delays in the middle of transmission
and thus causes the Bridge device to think it has all of the data too soon. Do not change this
parameter unless technical support personnel indicates that it should be altered or a problem is
encountered where only the first part of the exposure data is received.

When the Bridge device connects to the configuration utility program, the program uploads the current
X-Ray settings that are being used by the Bridge device. The installation technician may view the
current settings by clicking on the page tab labeled X-Ray Unit. When the X-Ray Unit’s screen is
displayed, the values (Vendor and Model, Baud Rate, Character Size, Parity, Stop Bit Count, End-
time, and Options) selected on the screen are those currently set in the Bridge device. The format of
the X-Ray Unit screen page is shown below.

The area labeled X-Ray Equipment Type contains two lists, a vendor list (top) and a model list
(bottom). The model list shows all the models supported for the vendor currently selected in the
vendor list. You may click on each vendor to see its supported models and select the correct one for
your installation.

-5-
Note: If your software was installed to support only one vendor, the vendor list will only show the
supported vendor and the model list will show all the supported models for that vendor.

The example screen shows the multi-vendor installation case – the

listed vendors and devices shown in the example are provided to
illustrate the program’s use and may not be those supported by the
product version you have.

To change the settings used by the Bridge device, the installation technician performs the following
actions:

• Select the X-Ray equipment vendor, if necessary, from those shown in the list labeled Vendor.

• Select the X-Ray equipment model from those shown in the list labeled Models for Selected
Vendor. The list includes all the model types supported by the Bridge device’s internal
firmware for the vendor currently highlighted in the Vendor list box.

• If the technician wishes to use the default serial communication settings for the currently
highlighted X-Ray equipment model, click the [Set Serial Port Defaults…] button which
appears below the model list. This makes the correct choices in the screen area labeled
Serial Interface Port. These settings are not saved in the Bridge yet.

After clicking this button, skip the port settings steps (those preceded by the Πsymbol) which
follow.

• Œ Select the baud rate from the supported rates shown in the list labeled Baud Rate.

• Œ Select (by clicking) the radio button circle which indicates the number (7 or 8) of data bits
which make up each transmitted character. These choice buttons appear in the box labeled
Data Bits.

• Œ Select (by clicking) the radio button circle which indicates the parity bit applied to each
transmitted character (Odd/Even/None). These choice buttons appear in the box labeled
Parity.

• Œ Select (by clicking) the radio button circle which indicates the number (1 or 2) of stop bits
which complete each transmitted character. The choice buttons appear in the box labeled
Stop Bits.

• If a special condition requires that you change the End-of-Data Period time, enter the new
value (seconds: 255 or less) in the data field which is has the label End-of-Data Period .
Normally, the installation technician does not change this value.

• Select the options that you need for your installation by using the options list and the buttons
labeled [+] (turn on option) and [-] (turn off option). The procedure for enabling and
disabling options is discussed in more detail below.

• The item labeled Multi-Unit ID allows each CR Bridge unit to be assigned an ID letter between
A and Z by clicking on the desired letter in the displayed list. This ID is intended for use in
cases where multiple CR Bridge units are interfaced to a single CR Console device (allowing

-6-
the CR Console to know which unit sent data). If your CR Console does not connect to
multiple Bridge devices, you may ignore this parameter.

When you connect to a previously configured CR Bridge unit, the currently assigned letter will
be highlighted in the Multi-Unit ID list box.

• Click on the button labeled [Save in Bridge]. None of the new settings are made active in the
Bridge device unless this button is clicked.

When the Bridge device accepts the settings, the following pop-up message appears:

If any other message appears, contact technical support.

After the unit is powered off and reconnected in its production environment, the new X-Ray Equipment
configuration will take effect. Configuration parameters are stored in non-volatile storage and are
preserved during periods when power is removed from the Bridge device . See the discussion about
ending a configuration session later in this document.

The X-Ray configuration page contains a list of options and two buttons which are used to enable or
disable each selected option. Every option description starts with one of the following status codes:

[+] This option is to be enabled within the Bridge ”;

[-] This option is to be disabled within the Bridge ”;

[0] This option must be disabled within the Bridge because the CR Console device being
used does not allow this option to be enabled;

[1] This option must be enabled within the CR Bridge because the CR Console device being
used requires this option for correct data reporting;

” The option state is not saved in the CR Bridge until the button [Save in Bridge] is clicked.

You may change the state of an option which begins with [+]or [-]. You may not change the state
of an option which begins with [0]or [1].

To change the state of an option:

• Highlight the option in the option list by clicking on its description.

-7-
• Click the [+]button to enable the option or the [-]button to disable the option.

• The option prefix will change to show the option’s new state. This means that this is the state
that will be saved in the CR Bridge when you click the button [Save in Bridge] – the options
are yet not saved.

If you attempt to change the state of an option that has a prefix of [0] or [1] , a pop-up message
will appear and tell you that you cannot change the state of a required option.

You only need to save the settings and options once, after they all have been selected on the screen.
You do not need to click this button after ever option is enabled or disabled.

When the configuration program is first connected to the CR Bridge, the status displayed for the
options presents the option state stored in the Bridge’s non-volatile memory.

5.0 RETRIEVING TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION

The Bridge device saves troubleshooting information internally so that it can be uploaded by the
installation technician and used to help solve connection problems. The installation technician may
also send the information to LPI technical support for help with troubleshooting more complex
problems.

The troubleshooting information is uploaded from the Bridge device into the PC by using the
configuration utility program. The following actions are performed:

• Connect to the Bridge device, as is described in sections 2.0 and 3.0 of this document.

• Click on the page tab labeled Debug. This will make the troubleshooting information screen
page visible. The format of this screen page is shown below:

-8-
• Click the button labeled [Upload Information from Bridge Unit]. This will cause data to be
retrieved from the Bridge device. While data is being retrieved, a series of text status
messages appear above the screen area labeled Event Log. The cursor also changes to an
hour glass.

When all data has been retrieved, the status message area is cleared and the cursor returns
to its normal shape. Data is displayed in the 3 screen areas (the last input from the X-Ray
unit, the last output to the CR unit, and the Event Log).

• If the installation technician is attempting to resolve problems immediately, he/she can view
the information in each of these screen areas and attempt to determine the problem. The
Event Log usually cannot be evaluated by the installation technician without help from LPI
technical support.

• There is a button labeled [Decode] next to the screen display area which shows the last
output sent to the CR unit. When the installation technician clicks this button, a pop-up box is
displayed. This box shows the CR output data separated into all of its X-Ray information data
fields, as illustrated below.

-9-
The data shown in the above example is for illustration purposes – it does not represent data for a
specific X-Ray machine. For some CR Bridge models, the data format will be different than that
shown.

• If the installation technician wishes to send troubleshooting data to LPI technical support, the
data must be saved into a disk file. To request that data be saved, the installation technician
clicks the button labeled

[Save Current Debug Information to Disk File] .

This results in the display of the standard MS/Windows Save-File dialog box. This is shown in
the example below. The installation technician must select the computer folder which is to
receive the output information file. The file name may also be specified at this time. The
default name provided by the program encodes the date and time.

- 10 -
In the above example, the default file name used is for a file created on February 3, 2006, at
3:56 PM.

The installation technician may attach this file to an e-mail message and send it to technical
support along with a description of the problem. If e-mail is not available, the file may be
printed and the output may be faxed or mailed.

• When trying to solve a problem, it is less confusing to start with an empty Event Log, so that
information from any prior test is not confused with information from the latest test. To clear
the event log, the installation technician clicks the button labeled [Reset Debug Log] .

When the Bridge device accepts the request, a pop-up message indicates the log has been
cleared in the device. After the installation technician clicks the [OK] button on the pop-up
message, the screen list of logged events is cleared.

The debug information retrieved from the Bridge device includes:

• The most recent input data received from the X-Ray equipment;

• The most recent data that the device attempted to send to the CR Console (even if the
transmission was not successful);

• The event log (a time stamped sequence of significant actions taken by the Bridge device and
conditions detected by it).

• One or more statistics lines which indicate the count of events that have occurred since the
debug log was last cleared. These counts indicate a number of conditions which are useful for
technical support to know about when troubleshooting (for example, the number of
communications errors detected on the X-Ray machine input interface).

Counter lines will be shown at the top of the Event Log screen area (they are not shown in the
prior example) and in the corresponding area of a saved debug file. Only non-zero counters

- 11 -
will be shown – the remaining counters can be assumed to have a zero value. If all counters
are zero, a single display line indicates this condition.

The operation (button click) which clears the Event Log does not clear the last X-Ray equipment input
data nor the last CR Console output data. It only clears the Event Items and the Event Statistics
Counters.

Note: A [Test] button and a related test input field are located in the lower right corner of the debug
screen. These are reserved for special testing and should not be used unless instructed to do
so by LPI technical support.

When the troubleshooting information is saved into a file, the file contains the following data:

• The date and time (when the information was saved).

• The manufacture date of the Bridge device;

• The firmware version number of the Bridge device’s internal software;

• The Bridge device model;

• The current configuration of the X-Ray interface (type of machine, baud rate, parity, data size,
and stop bit count);

• The current value of options set in the Bridge device;

• A list of all the different X-Ray machine types (protocols) which the Bridge device has been
programmed to support.

• The last input data received from the X-Ray Equipment. The non-printable special characters
in this data are translated to printable strings (for example, the string <CR> is used to
represent the carriage return character).

• The last output sent to the CR Console unit. This is first displayed as a single text string. The
non-printable special characters in this data are translated to printable strings. Following the
full string view is a view that breaks the record into its separate X-Ray information data fields.
The format of this information is different for different Bridge device models.

• One or more lines indicating the values of Event Statistics.

• All Event Log entries which are stored in the Bridge device; Each entry is prefixed by a
timestamp. The timestamp is followed by an event type code (for example, ENQ> indicates
that the Bridge device sent the ENQ character to the CR unit). The events are sorted in time
order, where the most recent event appears first.

There are two event parameters that follow the event type code. These are shown in the form
P1=xxxxxx and P2=xxxxxx. Each parameter is displayed in 3 formats: as a decimal number,
as a hexadecimal number, and as 4 ASCII characters.

The configuration utility does not know which parameters have meanings for each event type

- 12 -
or which format is the right one for an each event’s parameters. It is up to the person who
views the event log to know what the meanings are for an event’s parameters. LPI technical
support will understand the event codes and parameters.

The timestamp indicates the time at which the event occurred . This is shown in the form
mmmm:ss.kkk, where mmmm represents the number of minutes, ss represents the number of
seconds, and kkk represents the number of milliseconds. The timestamp clock starts at 0
each time the Bridge device is powered on.

Note: It is possible to disable the logging certain kinds events and the associated statistics. This
may be requested by technical support in order to allow a longer event history to be recorded
with a lower level of detail. This can be useful to capture information about intermittent
conditions, such as occasional communications line errors.

Technical support will instruct the service person on how to change the level of logging detail if
it is necessary to do so. Under normal conditions, the full detail level should be enabled.

6.0 Updating the Device Firmware

The firmware in the Bridge device can be updated with enhanced firmware provided by LPI.
Normally, the following items will be provided by LPI as part of a new firmware release:

• One or more computer files which contain firmware modules to be loaded. These may be
stored on CD media or may be the result of a download from the LPI web site.

• A set of instructions which describe which firmware files are to be loaded into the Bridge
device and the order in which they are to be loaded.

Usually, only one file is provided for each firmware update, but is possible to have an update
that includes multiple firmware files.

After reading the instructions and placing the new firmware files in an accessible directory on the local
PC (for example, on a CD that is inserted into the PC’s CD drive), the person performing the update
performs the following steps:

• Perform the actions required to connect the Configuration Utility to the Bridge device, as
described in the Running the Configuration Utility Program section of this document.

• Click on the Firmware Update screen page tab to make the update user interface page visible.

If your Bridge device does not support firmware updates, the Firmware Update screen page
tab will be removed from the program’s screens when a connection to the Bridge device is
made.

Below is an example of the firmware update screen when first selected.

- 13 -
• Click on the [Select File] button to begin the process of choosing the firmware file to be
loaded into the Bridge device. The following pop-up file selection dialog box is shown.

Select the firmware file that is to be downloaded during the current operation by clicking its
name (file NewFirmware.BFW in the above example) and then click the [Open] button. You
must first select the folder containing the firmware file(s) in the manner normally used during
MS/Windows™ file selection.

After a file has been selected, it is verified to be a valid LPI firmware file. If a file is selected
that does not contain LPI firmware, the following pop up message is displayed:

- 14 -
The file selection is then ignored.

• When a valid firmware file has been selected, its name is displayed in the Firmware File to
Load screen field and the [Perform Firmware Update] button is enabled (no longer grayed
out). The screen then appears as shown in the following example:

The user then clicks the [Perform Firmware Update] button to start the update process. This
results in the following pop up message being shown to ask if the user really wants to perform
the update and to warn that the update must not be interrupted:

- 15 -
At this point, the user must click the [Proceed with Update] button to start the firmware
transfer into the Bridge device.

• During the firmware file transfer process, status messages are displayed in the list box area in
the center of the screen page. The small window to the right of the [Proceed with Update]
button counts the number of packets which have been transferred to show progress. It is
cleared when the transfer finishes.

The screen content during a firmware file transfer is illustrated by the example below:

- 16 -
This screen example shows the final state of a successful file transfer. The packet count field
is empty because the transfer has finished. It will contain a number that increments during the
transfer.

• After the transfer has completed, the Bridge device takes itself out of configuration mode. It
indicates this by blinking the Power LED rapidly. The user should then turn off the Bridge
device power, wait about 10 seconds, and then turn the power back on. This puts the device
back into configuration mode.

The following program message also pops up to inform the user of the successful completion
of the update. The user must click the [OK] button.

If only one firmware file was to be loaded into the Bridge device, the update process is
complete. The user should select the utility program’s screen tab labeled Bridge and then
reestablish a connection with the Bridge device (click [Connect to Bridge], as described
earlier). The firmware version displayed after connection will indicate a new firmware version

- 17 -
(for most types of updates). The unit is now ready to be put back into service.

If more than one firmware file was to be loaded into the Bridge device, then connect to the
Bridge device and repeat the firmware update process, as described above, for the next file.

• If the firmware update process fails (for example, due to a communications error), a failure
pop-up message is shown instead of the successful completion pop-up. Most errors do not
result in any permanent corruption of the firmware – the downloaded data is simply discarded.

The user may retry the failed download in the same way he/she can download multiple files
(Cycle the device power, reconnect, and then repeat the download procedure).

If the firmware update fails more than once, the user should retrieve the debug information
(described earlier), save it to a file, and forward it to LPI technical support for assistance.

The CR Bridge Configuration Utility Program provides firmware update support starting with version
2.0 of the program. Older program versions do not provide a firmware update mechanism.

7.0 The ABOUT SCREEN

The screen page labeled About provides the installation technician with information about the
configuration utility program itself.

The most important information on this page is the software version number and release date of the
program. This lets the installation technician know that he/she has the latest version of the program.

Note: The version of the Configuration Utility Program and the version of the CR Bridge firmware
are not the same. The firmware version is shown on the main data screen.

An example of the About screen page is shown below:

- 18 -
8.0 ENDING the CONFIGURATION SESSION

To end the configuration session or the troubleshooting session the installation technician must
perform the following actions:

• Click the screen tab labeled Bridge to make the utility program’s main screen visible. Then
click the button labeled [Disconnect from Bridge] on the main screen. This will cause the
current status screen area to display the text: Not Connected. It will also cause the button
that was clicked to have its label changed to [Connect to Bridge].

Note that after a firmware download, a disconnect action is performed automatically.

• Click the button labeled [Close] in the lower right screen area. This will cause the LPI CR
Bridge Configuration Utility Program to exit.

• Remove power from the Bridge device by unplugging it from its electrical outlet.

• Disconnect the LPI supplied serial configuration cable from the Bridge device’s CR Console
connector. The cable needs be stored for later use. It is not used during normal operation of

- 19 -
the Bridge device.

• Move the Bridge device back to its production environment. Connect the CR Console cable to
its assigned connector on the Bridge device. Connect the X-Ray Equipment cable to its
assigned connector on the Bridge device. Apply power to the Bridge device by plugging it into
the electrical outlet.

The Power/Ready LED should be illuminated if the Bridge device powers up successfully.

9.0 FACTORY OPTION SETTINGS

The LPI CR Bridge Configuration Utility Program is also used by factory personnel to perform 1-time
operations such as setting the Bridge device’s manufacture date. The screen page which supports
factory settings does not appear unless the program is run in factory mode. This mode is not
intended for use by the installation technician.

The screen examples shown on the previous pages do not show a screen page tab labeled Factory
Settings. However, this tab will be displayed when the configuration utility program is run in factory
mode.

A separate document describes the additional program features provided in factory mode.

10.0 INSTALLING the CONFIGURATION UTILITY PROGRAM

The LPI CR Bridge Configuration Utility Program is distributed on a CD Rom disc along with this
documentation. To install these items, insert the disc into the CD Rom drive and wait for the Setup
program to start (it should start).

If the setup program does not start automatically, go to My Computer (or Windows explorer) and view
the CD ROM root folder. Double-click the file name setup.exe to start the installation.

After the setup program starts, follow the instructions on the screen.

The installation program allows the installer to select a single X-Ray vendor to be supported by the
configuration software or allows all vendors (which are supported by the CR Bridge firmware) to be
supported for configuration. This only affects the manner in which the configuration program displays
X-Ray equipment information for the X-Ray configuration screen page. It does not alter the firmware
in a CR Bridge unit.

Note: Not all vendors are supported by the single vendor install feature. If your X-Ray
Equipment vendor does not have its own installation listed as an option, choose the install
option for all vendors.

11.0 REMOVING the CONFIGURATION UTILITY PROGRAM

The LPI CR Bridge Configuration Utility Program may be removed from a computer by going to the
MS/Windows control panel. Select the Add/Remove programs operation. Then click on the

- 20 -
Configuration Utility Program description in the set of removable programs. Finally, click the
[Change/Remove] button shown next to the program name.

If a client site changes the brand (vendor) of X-Ray equipment it uses, the configuration software can
be removed from the computer. The software can then be installed again with a different vendor
support installation option.
