Explanatory Note:
1. MUSC courses at 2000 and above level will be included in the calculation of Major
GPA for honours classification.
[a] Students specializing in Composition Stream are required to take 11 units of stream-
specific courses and 14 units of elective courses, those taking other streams should
take 10 units of stream-specific courses and 15 units of elective courses.

Explanatory Note:
1. Students planning to Minor in Music must have attained at least Grade 5 in theory and
instrument/voice in the examination of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music,
or equivalent, and may be asked to attend an interview.

Learning Outcomes
1. Major Programme:
Knowledge Outcomes (Content):
Graduates will have possessed fundamental/core/inter-disciplinary knowledge of
music, including the following:
(1) music theory, (2) contextual study of music (ethnomusicological, historical, etc.),
(3) performance on a major instrument, (4) multiple musical traditions.
Skills Outcomes:
Generic Competencies/Transferable Skills:
Graduates will have acquired transferable generic skills, including: (1) ability to work
independently and in groups, (2) ability to express themselves clearly in written and
spoken English and Chinese, (3) ability to think creatively and critically.
Professional Skills:
Graduates will have gained a good mastery of the following professional skills: (1)
ability to express themselves about music in written and spoken Chinese and English,
(2) ability to make evidence-based critical judgments about musical performance,
composition, and musical culture, (3) ability to perform at an appropriate professional
level on their major instrument.
Attitude/Value Outcomes
Graduates will have developed a positive attitude towards issues concerning music,
including the following: (1) awareness of and open-minded attitude toward different
modes of musical expression, (2) passion for communicating through music, and (3)
awareness of and appreciation for the significance of music within all societies.
2. Minor Programme:
Upon the completion of the Minor Programme, students will have demonstrated basic
understanding of fundamental issues related to the subject, acquired knowledge of
some aspects of the subject with sufficient exposure and at a suitable level to allow
further study in this subject or related subjects or to pursue a related career.
