ADVENTURE
It's quite amazing that the
greatest skills are those which
appear to be the most casual, the
simplest, the least difficult.
Until you go out and try to walk
a high wire a hundred feet above
the sawdust; or hold 40 lions and
40 tigers in leash with a whip, it
might look easy. But when you're
in there, it's not all that easy. You
fire the gun too quick in the face
of Rosie the Roll-Over Tiger, and
you've had it!

A slightly trained auditor, willing
to do his job and willing to help
people, is senior to a Clear. If you
don't believe this, take a Clear who
has never been trained in any way
and say to him, "You've been very
worried about your Uncle George?
Well, why don't you just go on over
and clear up your Uncle George."
And he'll say, "Huh?" Possibly it
has never occurred to him to do
anything for anybody like that.
Possibly, while you were going
through the motions, he was busy
with his case and never really
noticed what this thing called
auditing was. Now he's Clear, he's
in good shape, he feels better than
he's ever felt before, and yet he
feels that somehow, somewhere,
something has eluded him.
On the other hand, somebody
just off the farm comes in for pro-
fessional auditor training, and in
the first week, you have him
jumping through hoops, diving
under chairs, firing off small guns
he can do something! Oh, he's still
as aberrated as the devil - he has
sciatica, lumbosis, upper ventricular-
nosis, neurotic tendencies and traits
yet at the end of that first week's
training, he can sit there and talk
to somebody. He's able to start a
session and persevere somehow.

Case-wise, he is tremendously
inferior to a -Clear. He has to put
up with things that a Clear doesn't
have to put up with. The fellow
that he is auditing says, "There I
was going down the left hand side
of the track . . . " and all of a
sudden this horrible feeling of
nausea comes over the auditor.
Now, auditors are not supposed
to be restimulated, that's part of
his training, so he just shuts it off.
But nevertheless, it is nausea. After
the session, he says to himself, "I
wonder if I've got an engram that
has the phrase in it, 'left hand side
of the track'? Let's see, 'Left hand
side of the track, left hand side
of the track' . . . " Well, his fellow
students pick him up and take some
Scotch tape and glue, hang him
back together again and shove him
into the next session. And if he
learns to audit while he's still
aberrated, he has now done some-
thing that a Clear no longer has an
opportunity to do. He has been
able to confront his own case, while
confronting the case of somebody
else and keeping the show on the
road at the same time. This is the
greatest high-wire feat in human
history!
The person who is studying to
become a Scientologist is faced
with difficulties, problems, and
complications which make lion
taming look rather mild. After all,
you can see the lion when he bites
you, and you know what is biting
you, which is a great comfort. But
when somebody says, "left hand
side of the track", you don't always
know what's biting you!
An auditor is counting on sheer
guts to get him through, and when
he gets through, he knows he's
done something. He is totally aware

technology and whose job it is to ask the
person to look, and get him to do so. The
word auditor is used because it means one
who listens, and a Scientology auditor

helping others achieve self discovery is
the greatest adventure there is. It is
literally the step by step creation of

of the fact that, come hell or high
water, he can somehow or other
poise his way through almost any-
thing. He can do something about it
and he can confront it. He has a
much wider, broader view of life
and people than any person, regard-
less of state of case, who is not an
auditor.
This is a point which the public
at large may miss: The auditor is
somebody who is three feet back
of the society's head. He does
things. He is effective. He makes
things happen.
Auditing is practically priceless.
It has never before existed, and one
of these fine days you'll get an idea
of its value, a very clear idea of its
value.
How much is auditing worth?
Well, how much is a human life
worth? You could ask any king, as
he lies on his deathbed, "What is
the value of a continued existence?"
He has his palace and his queen,
eight mistresses, the treasury, the
crown jewels and so forth. He
would think hard, because it
wouldn't seem to him that that
was enough. None of his posses-
sions would be enough to buy
what he now wants.
Therefore, when you are dealing
with the value of auditing, you'll
find it's not something that can
be valued. By all means, go ahead
and accept donations, and throw it
in the bank account so the manager
will be happy, and to make the
tradesmen that deal with you
happy. It's all right to make them
happy. Go ahead and accept any
amount you want as a donation —
but don't think you're being paid.
That would be silly, because to put
any value to it would be to under-
value it! If you were getting ten
thousand dollars an hour, you'd
still be underpaid, and basically
everyone realizes this.
Well then, how can a person
pay this debt?
Way back when, when I was
doing quite a bit of auditing, I
always told the pc that he owed
me something: he owed me a
favor, and that I would call for
it sometime. I wouldn't tell
them what it was. I thought when
they got in good enough shape,
they might appreciate granting a
favor. A few times, people have
gotten in good enough shape and
they've come around to me and
they've said, "What's the favor I
owe you?" And I've said, "Just
help people, that's all."
Only a Scientologist can truly
pay a Scientologist. He can co-
audit with him. You audit them,
they give you some auditing in
return. Only a Scientologist, an
auditor, can pay the debt. A Clear
can never pay the debt, if he can't
audit.
It's only fair that a Clear, or a
preclear, would be permitted to pay
it back one way or another on the
auditor's terms. Whatever he paid
you in cash didn't pay for it. You
could always say, "Well, now you
owe me a favor," and just let it
stand. Now he can pay you back -
he can go out and make the society
more decent to live in. But he'd
have to become an auditor to do it.
An auditor is on a broader career
than merely being a capable indivi-
dual. He's already doing something.

and other things that one has to
learn.
But the moment a perso'n goes to

that desire for training as an auditor
winds up eventually in an ability to

to be an auditor is the first step.

What would you do if your two year old
daughter fell off concrete steps forehead first
onto a concrete slab while playing?
This is the situation that faced JO PLUNKETT
early this year. When she arrived on the scene,
the child's face was blue, she was slumped over
and unable to speak. "It almost made me ill to
see my beautiful child in that condition,'''
confesses Jo. "1 thought 1 was going to lose her.
