preposição 'of' o núcleo do sintagma, ou seja, a ideia principal do grupo nominal,
será a última palavra sempre, como você determinou no exercício. Quando o
sintagma for composto com a preposição 'of', a ideia principal será demonstrada
pelo substantivo ANTES da preposição 'of'.

The single market offers Europeans the chance to live and work in any of fifteen
countries, but they are often hindered by the language barrier. The debate over
what can be done so that they understand each other better comes up with
recurring frequency. Ministers always suggest the same solution - children must
learn at least two foreign languages at school - but they cannot seem to agree on
when is the best time to start. Some people believe it is possible - even desirable -
to begin during the first year of school. In Luxembourg children are taught
their native tongue in addition to French and German at the same time, with
outstanding results. In other countries, such as the United Kingdom, educators
argue that the earliest years of a child's schooling should be entirely devoted to
learning the native language. Deciding on which language children should learn is
another matter of controversy. Some decision-makers want to focus on the
languages spoken in the European Union. Others, especially the Austrians and
Germans, argue that Russian, Chinese and Japanese are also important. Since the
ministers cannot find common ground, at each meeting they decide not to make
any decisions. The fifteen-member European Union is still a tower of Babel.

SeaWorld News
San Diego, Calif. (January 12, 1997) - The newborn gray whale calf that was
transported to Sea World of California last night is consuming six liters of whale
milk substitute every three hours.
"It is too early to know if the whale is stabilizing," said Sea World Veterinarian Dr.
Jim McBain. "What we do know is that it seems to be gaining strength and
responding to its treatment."
"The calf quickly realized that when it was being held by people, it got fed," McBain
said. "At this point, it will swim directly to one of the animal care specialists,
apparently demanding food." To feed the calf, the specialists employ a two-inch
diameter tube into her mouth. They hold the tube in place in her mouth while she
accepts the formula.
The whale is starting to exhibit sucking capabilities, and may soon graduate to a
large bottle for its feedings. It is also alert, and negotiating its 40-foot by 40-foot
holding pool without difficulty. Sea World veterinarians are monitoring the calf
constantly, looking for any signs of infection or other health problems.
"It will be weeks or even months before we can say she's got a good prognosis,"
said Jim Antrim, Sea World's general curator. "We will continue to use all our
resources to work toward our goal of rehabilitating and reintroducing the animal
back into the wild."
An adult California gray whale can be as long as 55 feet and weigh as much as 37
tons, the equivalent of five African elephants. It will eat 2,400 pounds of food daily,
and needs a 660-pound meal to fill its stomach.

No final
Sweet Tooth
If you want to know what someone is like, buy them a box of chocolates. According
to Murray Langham, a New Zealand psychotherapist, the shape of the chocolate
they choose will shed light on their personality. Those who favour round chocolates
are outgoing and friendly but often superficial. Those who select squares are
dependable, honest and truthful. The person who selects an oval chocolate is
creative and gregarious, while rectangles denote calm, good listeners. Those who
like spiral chocolates are energetic but disorganised while the person who fancies
diamond-shaped chocolates is money-orientated. And beware of those who seek
out the triangular chocolate, they don't have regard for other people's feelings!
Bizarre as these suggestions may be, Langham claims that they are backed up by
experimental evidence. "I became curious about the great number of my clients
who loved chocolate and began to realise that what sort of chocolates they liked
offered insights into their behaviour". His deductions have now appeared in a
book, Chocolate Therapy: Dare to Discover Your Inner Centre.

prejudica a compreensão.

No
Logo

(CNN) – We've all heard the old expression about fighting fire with fire, but how
about preventing fires with satellites and computers?
Scientists are using satellite imagery to create maps for computer programs that

Leia o
trecho abaixo e escolha a melhor opção para o subtítulo.
The goal isn't to prevent all fires. Forest managers say some fires keep
underbrush in check and open up seed pods.
By simulating the spread and intensity of wildfires, the managers hope to
better determine when to intervene to prevent fires that could rage out of
control, killing everything in their paths.
Intervening may mean simply trimming branches and clearing brush. Or
firefighters may set controlled burns to use up fire fuel.
Last year, federal agencies set 4,651 prescribed fires and burned more than
one million acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center's Web
site.
But these burns can be controversial and dangerous. In May, 2000, a
prescribed fire in Los Alamos, New Mexico, burned out of control after the
National Park Service set it to clear brush at the Bandelier National
Monument. The fire burned 47,650 acres and destroyed 235 residences,
according to the NIFC. It led to a temporary moratorium on prescribed fires.
"In the Los Alamos fire, the big problem was that fire managers guessed how
the fire would spread, and they guessed wrong, so the fire burst out of
control," said Steve Running, a forest ecology professor at the University of
Montana who specializes in remote sensing applications.

No trecho “...a prescribed fire in Los Alamos, New Mexico, burned out of control...”,

acontecido em maio de 2000 (“In May, 2000, ...”).
Bons

Japan
The economy and people of Japan went under a lot of changes at the end of World
War II. The changes were needed, because they needed to make the highest quality
products at very low price. They do this by paying the staff low wages. The
Japanese people don't mind working for low money. A lot of factories were
destroyed in the World War II. When they were built again, they were modernized
and had all the latest equipment.
Four Islands are on Japan, which make 98 percent of the area of Japan. The first
Island in the North, is Hokkaido. The next Island, Honshu is the biggest. And 2
southern islands, called Kyushu and Shikoku. The two Islands are separated from
the island of Honshu by the waters of the sea. Okinawa, one of the Ryukyu islands,
was administered by the United States after World War II but was returned to Japan
in 1972. Located about 600 km away in the Pacific Ocean are the Marcus, Bonin,
and Volcano islands, which were given back to Japan in 1968.
On a lot of Japan's islands there are zones of volcanic activity and continuing
mountain building that rims the Pacific Ocean. The islands of Japan are actually the
peaks of otherwise submerged mountain ranges. About 50 active volcanoes are
known in Japan. Every year about 1,500 minor earthquakes occur, and hot springs.
Mount Fuji, a volcano and Japan's highest mountain, rises to about 3,800 m.
Japan's industry expanded fast after the 1950s. The industrial area in Japan goes
from Tokyo in the East through the coastal areas along the Inland Sea to northern
Kyushu. Japan has the second biggest gross national product in the world and
commands a big share of the world market for ships, iron and steel, automobiles,
bicycles, mopeds, and other transportation equipment, machinery, chemicals,
ceramics, cameras, precision goods, and optical equipment, and television, radios,
and other electronic items. Couple of years ago Japanese firms made enormous
advances in technology. As they moved into more advanced industries they moved
much of the production in labor-intensive industries to the newly industrializing
Asian nations. This combination of research and development and cost-cutting is

Before starting on their migration south, the whales eat heavily during the summer

travel perhaps so as not to lose their way: "They usually follow the contours of the

Some still get lost, though. In 1986 "Wrong Way Humphrey" swam into San

Vamos relembrar algumas das estratégias que aprendemos? De onde o texto foi
retirado? A que área de conhecimento ele pertenceria? Existem palavras cognatas,
informações não verbais, números, nomes próprios? Observe relações entre os
elementos na estrutura das frases! Há pronomes no texto? Quais são os referentes
destes pronomes?
Quais seriam as ideias suporte? Que tipo de texto seria este? Existe algum
Vamos procurar
então algumas palavras chave no texto?
Estamos construindo o
significado aos poucos!
E a palavra "trip"?
(cognata: scarce).
Logo vamos descobrir!
How long does it take?
shore___________ocean___________river___________sea

UNIDADE 8 :: AULA 2
Sterilisation is the destruction of bacteria and is an essential part in the fight against
disease. Heating is used to kill bacteria and the cooking of food is an everyday
example. Milk is partially sterilised by heating it to about 800C and maintaining the
temperature for about 16 seconds. This process is called pasteurisation and ensures
that all potential harmful bacteria are destroyed within the milk. Chemists have
produced many bacteria killing chemicals and the use of these has saved many
lives. The first of these chemicals was a dilute solution of carbolic acid, C6H5OH. In
1985, a surgeon named Joseph Lister began sterilising surgical wounds with this
solution. The number of deaths in his wards decreased because of this practice. Two
main solutions used to kill bacteria in the home are antiseptics and disinfectants.
Disinfectants are stronger than antiseptics and are too harsh, irritant or toxic to be
used on the skin. It is usually used to clean or sterilise objects such as surgical
instruments. Antiseptics are used on the skin, either before surgery or on cuts and
bruises, and prevents sepsis which is the destruction of the tissues by bacteria.
One aim of medicine is to control disease with the use of chemicals. Chemicals, or
drugs, are made from natural causes such as plant or animal extract, or are made in
the laboratory. The most successful synthetic drug in the world today is called
acetyl salicylic acid, or more known as aspirin. It is made from salicylic acid, a
disinfectant, and acetic acid. Aspirin is anti-inflammatory, meaning it reduces
swelling, redness, relieves arthritis and is effective against stroke. However, if used
too much side effects such as internal bleeding of the stomach occur. Aspirin is also
known as an analgesic as it is a pain killer. Three types of pain killers are strong
analgesics, local anesthetics, and sedatives. Strong analgesics are complex nitrogen
compounds isolated from opium such as morphine (C17H19NO3.H2O). Local
anesthetics reduce the sensitivity of nerve fibers to reduce pain such as cocaine
(C17H21NO4). Sedatives are drugs which reduce tension and anxiety such as
codeine (C18H19NO3.H2O).
Another aim of medicine is to cure disease. The use of chemical agents to destroy
infectious organisms, or diseases, without destroying the host is called
chemotherapy. Before 1900, only three chemical remedies were known: chinchona
bark for malaria, ipecacaunha for dysentery, and mercury for syphilis. Very
significant types of drugs related to chemotherapy are drugs containing sulfur, or
sulfa drugs. Sulfa drugs are dyes that are specifically lethal to harmful
microorganisms. Protonsil was the first sulfa drug. It breaks down in the body to
sulfanilamide, which is effective in destroying streptococci.
Bacteria need para-aminobenzoic acid to make a vitamin called folic acid to grow,
and as the structure of sulfanilamide is similar to para-aminobenzoic acid, the
bacteria can't distinguish between the two chemicals. The bacteria take in the sulfa
drug instead of the para-aminobenzoic acid and die. Luckily, humans don't need
para-aminobenzoic acid to make folic acid so they are unaffected by sulfa drugs.
Compounds related to sulfanilamide were tested: sulfapyridine was effective against
pneumonia and sulfathiazole saved the lives of many wounded soldiers during
World War II.
There are many contributions made by chemistry that deal with our lives. The
simple health and hygiene of a human, in particular, consisted of many hours of
hard and dedicated work and research by chemists. The purification of our water by
chlorination, dental cleanliness by toothpaste, the sterilisation of a cut, the control
of disease by aspirin, and the cure of disease by chemotherapy have all contributed
to our livelihood and our health. Whenever we drink tap water, brush our teeth,
dress a wound, have an aspirin for our headache or drink medicine we are using
these contributions made by chemistry. Without these contributions, we would not
be living in the clean and healthy lifestyle that we live in today.

If you exercise to maintain your cardiovascular fitness, you may be spending more
time sweating than you need to. At the recent meeting of the American College of
Sports Medicine, it was announced that just 12 minutes of exercise a few times a
week is enough to keep your heart in shape. Previously, the accepted minimum was
20 minutes. Dr. Kenneth Cooper of the Aerobics Center in Dallas agrees with the
12-minute concept but warns exercisers to watch their heart rates. "If you have to
sacrifice safety by pushing cold muscles too fast in those 12 minutes," he says,
"then you risk injury and lose all benefits of a shorter workout."

Did you ever wonder why the bugs seem to be biting only you? According to Self
magazine, insects are attracted by scent, and mosquitoes seem to be attracted to
people who have eaten food containing the chemical serotonin. Bananas and
peanuts are rich in this chemical, so they are best avoided on picnics. What´s more,
even a single drink of alcohol attracts bugs by "flushing" the skin with blood and
"sweetening" its scent. One solution is to pour a capful of bleach into your bath -
this can often keep bugs away (from you) for up to 24 hours.

"As the educational system grows it becomes more bureaucratic. Jobs are
specialized and duties are clearly defined. Employees are evaluated on the
basis of their performance. Their jobs are coordinated and arranged in a
hierarchy. Employees are offered a career in the organization. In theory, at
least, such measures lead to greater efficiency, though we are aware that this
is not always the case. Nevertheless, pressures toward bureaucracy seem
virtually irresistible, not only in schools but in all large organizations".

I apparently caused a few chuckles the other day with my message about the
two interesting books I had just read. One colleague mentioned that it takes
him two months to read a book, not two hours. This brings up a point, which I
thought to mention in that message, but I'll instead mention now--that there
is a certain kind of "reading" that's probably a good skill for most academics.
It's not the only type of reading that needed, but it's one that I've found quite
helpful.

1 - A colleague sent me by e-mail a "brain puzzle" -- this was the kind where you
have to look at a picture and find a bunch of hidden objects. Supposedly, being
able to find a lot of the objects is a demonstrative of superior cognitive ability.
2 - Naturally, I couldn't find them all. So I picked out some key words from the
puzzle, did a search on the Web, and found the answers in a few seconds :-). Now,
here's a brain puzzle for Papyrus News readers. Answer this one question: Did I
cheat? (Or did I just demonstrate superior cognition via another route? :-))
5 - One problem that a colleague at UC Irvine has been working on is that school
assessment does not adequately take into account how people are able to make
use of tools in their learning, thinking, and problem solving. Schools increasingly
emphasize technology in the classroom, but they don't allow children to make use
of technology in taking tests. This is perhaps changing a bit through use of
calculators in certain tests, though again the question of "cheating" is raised. I
suppose part of the task is to design assessments whereby technology can be
helpful in the task but does not substitute for the underlying cognitive skill that is
being tested. For example, if the brain puzzle mentioned at the top is truly
designed to test how someone can distinguish items in a field (examining, for
example, field dependence and field independence), than allowing them to search
on the Web for the answers would be counterproductive. If the puzzle is designed
to find out someone's ability to take advantage of resources to solve problems,
then allowing them to use a range of tools is helpful.
6 - Of course the bigger problem with school tests is they don't allow learners to
make use of the most powerful tool available, the collective cognition of their fellow
human beings. People tend to do well in life when they can work with other people
to gather information, explore ideas, think through problems. Indeed, being able to
learn from and with others is one of the most powerful indicators of what people
refer to as intelligence. School tests, however, don't measure that--they just
measure what one can do alone, with very few if any tools. There are of course
reasons for all of this--it's much cheaper and more efficient to design and
implement an individual multiple-choice test than a complex learning assessment
that involves collaborative task work using a variety of tools and media. But how
fully does that measure the full range of human cognition? And especially the types
of thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration most needed in today's society?

Bacteria in the Home
No matter how clean we think our homes are, they are still teeming with
bacteria that live on every surface, near and in toilets, sinks, showers,
baths, in carpets, on pets and in and on the people who live there. Most of
the bacteria in our local environment do no harm at all and there is an old
saying that 'everyone needs to eat a bit of dirt'. There may be some truth
in this as the constant exposure to bacteria helps to keep our immune
systems on alert, ready to go into action if pathogenic bacteria or viruses
come along.
In the home, there are some danger areas and it is sensible to take steps to
avoid illness by following simple strategies for personal and food hygiene.

respectivos subtextos abaixo:
Throughout history, people all over the world have considered toilets far too
insanitary to have inside the place where they live. Today, we think that toilets
in warm bathrooms inside the house are much better than going down the garden
on a cold night, but it does mean that some precautions are necessary to avoid
the spread of potentially harmful bacteria.
Bacteria such as E.coli, the Bacteroides species and many others make up
the rich bacterial population found in the human intestines. Many bacteria
find their way out of the body every time faeces are passed. It is therefore
important to ensure that toilets are always flushed and hands are always
washed after visiting the toilet. Bleaches and commercial cleaners kill
bacteria very quickly and should be used to wipe the toilet surfaces,
including the handle, and to clean the toilet bowl regularly. And it is
important not to forget the area around the toilet, particularly the floor
just in front, where spills can happen.

Any environment that is warm and moist is an ideal place for bacteria to breed
and establish themselves. Bacteria can live quite well in shower trays, wastes,
plug holes, under taps, in overflow channels and on damp toothbrushes,
flannels and sponges. A sure sign that bacteria have begun to make a home in
the bathroom is the appearance of unpleasant, fusty smells. As well as bacteria,
moulds also grow well in these conditions, alongside bacterial colonies.
Changing flannels and toothbrushes regularly, and washing them in hot soapy
water every day can keep them fresher and regular cleaning keeps the bacteria
to safe levels elsewhere.

Damp cloths are also a bad idea in the kitchen but most of the bacterial dangers
there come from food. Raw meat can easily become contaminated with bacteria,
and chicken is notoriously bad.
The surfaces, knives and chopping boards used to prepare raw meat should be
carefully washed in very hot soapy water, and separate boards should be used for
raw meat and cooked foods to prevent cross contamination.

Other danger spots in the home that usually house a lot of bacteria, some of them
potentially nasty include the rubbish bin and the floor and walls around it, pet
bowls and cat litter trays and potty training equipment if you have toddlers.
Objects that are handled a lot also have more bacteria than tabletops and furniture.
The TV remote control and telephone handsets are a case in point. However, the
important thing to remember is the vast majority of the bacteria on furniture and
everyday objects are harmless. There is little point in struggling to sanitise your
entire home in the hope of reducing bacteria to zero. Your skin is teeming with
bacteria, your gut is full of them and they are essential to human existence.

To me, healthy eating simply means removing, or limiting, the foods in your diet
that could be harming you; and eating enough of the foods that contain the
nutrients essential to your health. So, what foods could be harming you? Ones
filled with chemicals. Here are some of the main sources of unhealthy chemicals
in our food:
Chemicals and drugs used in raising livestock
Researchers feel that this is probably the biggest problem and none of these are
required to appear on the label. Over 70 percent of all antibiotics used in
the USA are used in raising livestock to prevent infection because the animals
are kept in cramped inhumane conditions.
Steroids are also given to increase milk production and speed growth. The feed
given to these animals is full of chemicals as well and pesticides and chemicals
accumulate in the fat of these animals that we then eat. So if you do eat dairy or
animal protein, eating organic is important to decrease your chemical burden.
Chemicals used in pesticides and fertilizers
Although the use of pesticides has made our food production more efficient, it
has placed a huge/large toxic burden on us and the earth. In 1995, more than 5
billion pounds of pesticides were sold worldwide, more than 1 billion pounds in
the USA. FDA inspections have found legal residues on two thirds of food
sampled, therefore these pesticides remain on our food.
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), you can lower your
pesticide consumption by nearly four-fifths by avoiding the 12 most
contaminated fruits and vegetables and instead eating the least contaminated
produce.

Examples of Good and Bad Manners Around the World
A resposta correta é: In China, Taiwan, and much of the Far East, belching is
considered a compliment to the chef and a sign that you have eaten well and
enjoyed your meal. → 5, When dining in China, never force yourself to clear your
plate out of politeness -- it would be very bad manners for your host not to keep
refilling it. Instead, you should leave some food on your plate at each course as an
acknowledgment of your host's generosity. → 2, In most of the Middle and Far East,
it is considered an insult to point your feet (particularly the soles) at another person
or to display them in any way, for example, by resting with your feet up. → 1,
Nowadays, a bone-crushing handshake is seen as admirable in the United States
and U.K., but in much of the East, particularly the Philippines, it is seen as a sign of
aggression -- just as if you gave any other part of a person's body a hard squeeze!
→ 4, In many countries, particularly in Asia and South America, it is essential to
remove your shoes when entering someone's home, while in most of Europe it is
polite to ask your host whether they would prefer you to do so. The reason, as
anyone who's ever owned white carpet will attest, is simple hygiene and cleanliness.
→ 6, Chewing gum might be good for dental hygiene, but in many parts of the
world, particularly Luxembourg, Switzerland, and France, public gum-chewing is
considered vulgar, while in Singapore most types of gum have been illegal since
1992 when residents grew tired of scraping the sticky stuff off their sidewalks. → 3.

The people running Facebook are an ambitious crew; they see Facebook as a
successor to Google in many respects. In fact many of the executives used to
work at Google, including CTO Bret Taylor, COO Sheryl Sandberg, Advertising
VP David Fischer and Communications VP Elliot Schrage, among others.
However as a search property Facebook has, in the past, been almost unusable
and no threat to Google or any other search engine. In fact, it has been (so far) a
missed opportunity for Facebook partner and investor Microsoft. But Microsoft’s
Bing is becoming more prominent on Facebook and the site itself has tried to
improve search.
Over the past year Facebook has seen growth in search query volumes and has
started to approach AOL in terms of overall query volume share, according to
comScore. And certainly Facebook search has considerable potential — but that’s
still what it is: potential.
