Engine Features
Engine Block
The new engine block has
straight thread o-ring
fittings, the engine serial
number stamped on the
block, and new internal
drillings.

The rear oil seal housing provides a mounting

location for the rear crankshaft seal.

2
The block casting includes an
integral oil cooler housing , oil pump
housing, water pump volute and
coolant bypass passage.

The redesigned water pump installs

into the integral water pump volute
in the front of the cylinder block.

The redesigned oil passages and

pump provide for improved lubrication
oil flow.

An integrated fuel return rifle collects

the injector leak-off and returns the
flow to the fuel tank.

3
The crankshaft utilizes a
signal indicator ring to detect
engine speed. The crankshaft
is being held in place by main
caps and 12 mm capscrews.

Piston cooling nozzles supply a

stream of oil to cool the piston
during engine operation

Piston Assembly

The angle split rod

design cap allows for
the largest possible
connecting rod
crankshaft bore.

QSB pistons contain three piston ring grooves

and are available with a single ni-resist insert,
dual ni-resist insert, or with a dual ni-resist insert
and an anodized surface. The piston can also be
gravity cast, squeeze cast, or squeeze cast fiber
reinforced. The piston and ring designs depend
upon the horsepower rating for the engine.

4
Ring Piston
The top ring of the piston is a
keystone design made of ductile
iron.
The middle compression ring is
rectangular and made of gray iron …
or keystone shaped and made of
ductile iron depending on rating.
The keystone of the second ring
allows for less carbon buildup and
reduces ring groove wear.

The ring pack is also horsepower

dependent

The block design also includes a skirted block

for superior strength. The bored piston
cylinders are located 4.72 inches center to
center spacing with 0.71 inches spacing
between cylinders. This provides room for a
dry liner, if needed for service. Piston cooling
is provided by piston cooling nozzles fed from
cast-in passages in the engine block.

The head gasket is orificed to control

coolant flow into the cylinder head.

ISB engine is equipped with wider

camshaft lobes, wider sliding tappet fact,
and longer push tubes hardened sockets
on each end. These components reduce
stress and wear which eliminates the
need for overhead adjustments during
normal scheduled maintenance.

5
Reusable gasket

and integral thermostat

housing.

The cylinder head features

integrally-cast valve guides
and induction hardened valve
seat surfaces.
Engines rated greater than 230
horsepower have hardened
valve seat inserts installed in
the intake and exhaust seats
