Additional Information on OrCom 190 (Practicuml

May 24,2044

The following information is being provided in response to the May tB,2AA4, memorandum from
Chancellor Marita VT Reyes:

A. €rganiaational Communication 180 (Practicum) comprises 200 hours of supervised internshipi*t ane
private or public organization of the student's choice. The internship program varies from company
to company, but the student is advised to seek training in an organization where his academic
preparations in the BA OrCom program will be put to use, especially those in technicalwt'iting,
research, and interpersonal relations. The student is discourageJ from accepting primary clerical
internship contract.

B. The practicum is conducted during regular office hours in a formal organization in Metro Manila.
Among the popular choices of students are advertising agencies, event organizations, broadcast and
print media firms, hotels, banks, public relations companies, NGOs, and government officas.

C. The choice of organization is ultimately that of the subject. Almost all organizations require parental
consent and/or formal recommendation from the department and stlpulate the absence of
employer-employee relationship with the student-intern. lt is a must, hourever, that the
organization be wlthin Metro Manila, has a specific location, not to be owned or rnanaged by the
student-trainee's family. There is no known case where the student-trainee had to pay for the cost
cf tf€ifring; in fact, many organizations provide student-trainees with training allowance al$,**er
treats.

D. The student's final grade in the course is derived from as follows: 50% from the
practicum/internship supervisor on site, 30% from the written case report on aR organizational
communication-related issue at the practicum site as observed and documented by the intern, and
3S% from the practicum presentation folder. The practicum on-site supervisor's numerical gfa# is
contained in a sign-sealed evaluation form sent by, and returned by the company to, the
department. The presentation folder contains all the documents pertinent to the conduct of the
practicum te.g., application and recommendation letters, service contract, waivers, tirne card,
certificate of completion), company profile, a diary-type account of the practicum experience, work
sarnples, photographs, and the case report.

E. Two secticns of OrCom 180 are opened every summer and are usually handled by Professor Rafael
Vl{lar. However, the orientation for the practicum is conducted in January and the processing of
application and other requirements takes place immediately after the orientation.
