Protein Nutrition Education Session

First 2 classes of little kids: Protein


● What is protein?
● Can you name some proteins?
● Can you name some NON meat proteins?
● Who doesn't eat meat here? Why? / Does everyone eat meat here?
● Why do you think we need protein?
○ hair , skin, nails and muscular growth
○ Other body functions
○ Muscles- outside and inside
■ Outside- your bicep (make everyone flex their bicep)
■ Inside- your heart (make everyone feel their heartbeat)
● Materials
○ Get paper from printer room for coloring
○ Activity: Draw your favorite superhero surrounded by your 4 favorite
protein foods
● Physical Activity:
○ Push-up contest- who can do the most push ups
■ If you are not paying attention you cannot play.
■ Do NOT tell them about the prize until end of lesson
● Provide foods:
○ Explain what the food is and why it's good for you.
Oats​!
Reduces: Blood pressure, Cholesterol
Enhances: Athletic performance, Immune response
Promotes: Healthy digestion, Protection against colon cancer
Flax Meal!
Promotes: Lower cholesterol, Healthy brain function, Joint health, Healthy digestion
Reduces: Risk of heart disease, Risk of depression
Sunflower Butter!
Promotes: Satiety (feeling full), Omega 3 intakes, Vitamin E and Magnesium intakes
Chocolate Chips!
Promotes: Happiness!

○ If you increase your protein intake you have to increase your water intake
too
● Materials
○ Get paper from printer room for coloring
○ Activity: In groups of 3-4 write down all the protein foods you know and
the group with the most gets a prize.
● Provide foods:
○ Explain what the food is and why it's good for you.
○ Protein from foods is best but supplements and shakes are good for
people who need extra or cant get enough from the foods they have
access to.
