Communications Coordinator

ABOUT PROJECT WILDLIFE: Project Wildlife is a nonprofit, wildlife rehabilitation organization that
operates a wildlife care facility (Triage Center) and over 120 home-based volunteer rehabilitation sites. PW is one
of the largest agencies of its kind in the country and assists more than 10,000 wild birds and mammals every year.
Our mission is “To improve the quality of life for local wildlife and the community as the primary resource for
animal rehabilitation and education”.

THE POSITION: The Communications Coordinator assists with the planning, coordination and
implementation of the communications for the organization. The primary areas of focus include the coordination
and implementation of the public relations, marketing, social media and website functions, as well as the design
and production of the bi-monthly newsletter. The Communication Coordinator also works closely with the
Development Manager in promoting the agency’s special events. In addition, the CC assists with coordinating,
scheduling and training the administrative office volunteers for the agency.

WORK SCHEDULE: Part Time Hourly ($14 - $15 per hour) – 30 hrs per week - Some weekend and/or nights
occasionally required.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Assist with the development and implementation of the agency’s PR/Marketing and branding strategies
through traditional and social media outlets as well as through community relations.
 Oversee the development and implementation of the social media and online giving campaigns.
 Assist with the design, writing and production of the agency’s promotional and educational materials.
 Provide general information to the public regarding PW programs and provide referral services.
 Compose press releases, assemble press kits and act as media liaison under the direction of the Executive
Director.
 Cultivate relationships with the press and build/maintain a current media contact list.
 Assist the Development Manager with event related communications and the coordination and
implementation of the agency’s special events.
 Oversee the maintenance of the agency’s website, including all content updating.
 Compose and electronically distribute the agency’s bi-monthly newsletter.
 Assist with the recruitment, training, support and scheduling of administrative office volunteers.
 Attend corporate and community outreach events on behalf of the agency as requested.
 Complete other related duties as assigned by the Development Manager and/or Executive Director.

PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: This position requires an organized, detail oriented planner with
outstanding written and verbal communications skills. This person must be a creative, flexible and independent
self-starter with excellent time management skills who can manage several projects concurrently. She/he must
possess exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of staff and
volunteers. An interest in San Diego area wildlife and the mission of Project Wildlife is essential.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


A Bachelors Degree in graphic art, communications, marketing/PR, English, journalism or a related field is
required. However, relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Demonstrated proficiency in MS
OFFICE, desktop publishing and social media skills are necessary. Experience in nonprofit marketing/public
relations is preferred. A valid California driver’s license and automobile insurance are required for local travel.
