.X_rays in dentistry
A recent medical study .
said that an X-ray
examination on teeth more
than once per year
increases the chances of
.developing brain tumors

A recent medical study

conducted by American
researchers said that an X-
ray examination on teeth
more than once per year
increases the chances of
developing a common
.tumor in the brain

The researchers found in

the study published by the
Journal of the American
Cancer Society that people
who attend a medical
examination of the teeth
using X-rays are more likely
than others to form a form
of brain tumor known as a
meningioma, after the
researchers worked on
studying two types of X-
rays: Side rays (Bitewing)
and panoramic rays that are
.used in dentistry

The researchers said the

meningioma is a tumor that
originates from the
meninges, the membranes
that surround the brain and
spinal cord, where those
tumors grow in the lining
inside the skull, noting that
they grow slowly but pose a
great danger to life A
person if you start to put
.pressure on the brain

A study of three thousand

adults showed that half of
the participants had brain
tumors, the main cause of
which was the continuous
and repeated exposure to
.X-rays
The researchers confirmed
that people who were
exposed to lateral X-ray on
the mouth (Bitewing) were
more likely to develop
meningiomas by 40 to 90
.percent

This results should not

prevent anyone from going
to the dentists, but she
added, "It seems that a
large percentage of patients
are undergoing annual tests
using X-ray instead of every
two or three years, as the
researchers recommend for
." ".healthy adults

For its part, the American

Dental Association said in
response to the results of
the study that it had asked
its members for a long time
to limit the use of X-rays
only when necessary, and
also recommended that
measures be taken to
reduce radiation exposure
to patients such as the use
of body protectors or the
use of digital X-rays or
increase the speeds used to
. capture the rays

She added that many oral

diseases cannot be
monitored only by
theoretical examination,
and therefore X-rays are a
valuable means of obtaining
information about the
health status of the mouth,
especially with regard to
gum disease, infections, or
.even some types of tumors

It is noteworthy that the

American Dental
Association recommends
that healthy adults undergo
a routine X-ray examination
on the mouth every two to
three years, and for
adolescents every year and
a half to three years,
provided that these tests
are carried out in children
every year to two years
because this age period is
witnessing a development
.Teeth and jaw
X-rays, or as they are called
x-rays, were discovered by
the German scientist
Röttingen in 1895, and since
that time these rays have
begun to take an important
role in various fields of
medicine where they are
used to diagnose diseases
and also are used in the
treatment of certain
diseases such as cancer.
Dental X-rays are x-rays of
the teeth, jaw bones,
tissues, and surrounding
structures to help diagnose
dental, mouth, and jaw
problems. [1] X-rays can
show cavities, tumors,
hidden dental structures
such as wisdom teeth, and
unnoticeable bone loss
.during visual examination
The x-ray is done by
releasing a beam of x-rays
that penetrates the oral
structure at different levels
before settling on the film
or ray sensors. In the
radiographic images, the
teeth appear in a light color
from the surrounding
tissues due to their
reluctance to penetrate the
.rays

After exposure to radiation

film, it is usually prepared
using chemicals in a dark
room, as the film is
sensitive to natural light.
This process is accurate and
any change in the process
may lead to the necessity to
repeat the imaging process
and expose the patient to a
greater amount of
radiation. In the case of
using digital X-ray imaging
devices, the electronic
sensors receive the rays
that convert the signal into
a digital image that appears
by the computer and
reduces the risks of the
necessity of re-imaging as it
is spreading more and more
. in the health sector recently
