Aircraft: A320FAM Originator: AAR Updated: 11 Jan 2012

Description Additional Information

Recently AAR has experienced increasing incidents of “ENG OVSPD PROT FAULT” message after engine Engine Type: V2500-A5
starting. As the airplane is not dispatchable with this message per MMEL, we have experienced departure Operational environment: Not applicable
deplay or cancellation due to this message. Utilization: Passenger
As we think ENG OVSPD PROT FAULT” system logic does not indicate current fault or damage but Shared Opinion: 0
overspeed protection disable only, we have contacted Airbus to review EEC self test logic and revise MMEL,
if possible. However, Airbus reply is still negative.
So any operators suffered from ENG OVSPD PROT FAULT" Message and any opinions to revise MMEL ?

Root Cause Final Resolution
Two issues leading to ENG x OVERSPEED PROT FAULT warning are known: 1) issue solved by IAE SB 23-0215 (Feb 2010) or by IAE SB 73-0223 (Feb 2011), which also includes the
1) Post SB 73-0191 FMU units (introduced in 2005, around 800 aircraft are concerned are susceptible by fix for Shuff Off Vlave dual coil failure. Commercial support is provided by Woodward for both SB
interference between switch rod and FMU cover 2) issue by EEC software standard SCN 21. Refer to IAE VSB73-0222 & SB 73-1097
2) Spurious warning (FMU found NFF in shop), due to FMU overspeed test logic. The issue has been
reproduced on bench

Best Practices - Mitigation Actions

In link with the second scenario, TSM has been revised in order to detect spurious cases and so avoid
supplementary & unnecessary maintenance actions Progress Status
Solutions have been develiopped to cover both issues:
1) New FMU cover with increased tolerance.
2) Overspeed test logic improved in EEC to prevent spruious faults

SAS (Meyer Rolf) - 09 Jun 2011 - Identify Issue

Not a big problem at SAS. All 3 cases has been solved by replacing the FMU PN 8061-63x. Maybe the TSM should take the FMU
into consideration before the EEC.

DLH (Kilchert Roland) - 09 Jun 2011 - Identify Issue

DLH had a few occurrences with ENG OVSPD PROT FAULT messages due to broken overspeed valve switch activation rod
because of a insufficient clearance between the over speed valve switch activation rod and the heat shield of the electro-hydraulic
servo valve compartement. This problem occurs on Wooward FMUs which are post SBE V2500-ENG-73-0191.
This on-wing problem can be fixed by following the TSM strictly.
With implementing SBE V2500-ENG-73-0215 on the FMUs in shop, a new designed heat shield will be incorporated to provide
sufficient clearance between the over speed valve switch activation rod and the heat shield of the electro-hydraulic servo valve
compartment, hopefully curing the problem.
