Razor-x/Game Overview

Overview
- Formika is a fast paced, innovative, content rich shooter which requires a balance of skill and strategy
to beat.
- The Tower defence FPS has the player take control of one of three technologically advanced Dwarven
commanders that the player develops to suit their play styles
- Overcome adversity in a range of play styles that suits you, the player, be it using massive damage,
speed and agility or thick armour and defences.
- Build towers that aid players in their fight against the Forma. Unlock more powerful towers to be used
in more situations or upgrade to hone the power of towers that are already available
- Take on the Forma, massive, alien creatures, vast in number and design, in stunning levels set all
over planet Formika.
- The game also incorporates an RPG twist with the on-going development of the players avatar and
fully customize their appearance, skills and traits to suit you. Also make decisions as to which towns
to defend and where to channel your efforts to save the Dwarven race
- The game also implores expandable content with both single player and multi-player story modes in
its coop-heavy design

What is the game?

This game is a tower defence first person shooter mix.  The game takes the agility needed from an FPS and the
strategy needed in a tower defence title and fuses the two in a fierce brawl for control and stability on planet
Formika

Why create this game?

This game is created to test and push the skills of those working on it.  All members of the team are new to
creating a video game from start to finish.  The group working together are constantly testing and pushing
both each other and themselves to create a powerful title, utilizing a powerful game engine, UDK.  Albeit, a full
3d, cross-genre title is a heavy ask even for seasoned development teams with near-endless resources and
expertise, but it is believed by all working on the project that this is the most demanding and hardcore way to
push their skills.

Where does the game take place?

The game takes place on planet Formika, a world recently rediscovering itself.  A terrible war broke out in the
backstory to the game which left the dwarf-populated world in tatters.  Before the planet
could recuperate from the loss of its soldiers, political treachery takes place.  The son of the King of Bofkrak,
Deckard, is denied succession after his father’s death and Arkath, the new king is thrown into Deckard’s sights
for revenge.  The evil son travels to Orval-Tor to meet with a powerful and feared caster, Gildur.  Under the
employment of Deckard, Gildur summons ancient beasts from deep within Formika to do the corrupt bidding
of rightful heir.  The Forma, the ancient summoned insect-like creatures wreak havoc on the world and the
Alliance of Formika must act with their limited military to halt the uprising.

What does the player control?

The player takes control of a lowly soldier, barely adapted to war and is trusted into great responsibility.
Under the guidance of Veteran, a powerful, well-seasoned soldier, the player must defence the cities of
Formika from attack.

What’s the difference?

This fusion of First person skill and dexterity, and the resourcefulness and strategy needed for Tower defence,
throws the player into a multi layered, omnidirectional brawl with beautifully hideous, aggressive and powerful
enemies.  The player develops as they see fit, aspects of their character to suit their play styles and
preferences.
This mix of genre has been seen in recent releases but none are so dynamic and well utilized as Formika.
Games like Sanctum, use a path-following AI which becomes stagnant quickly.  Dungeon defenders uses
unrefined mechanics and poorly designed levels when implementing their interpretation of the cross-genre
title.  Formika promises dynamic, exciting gameplay that just isn’t found in today’s market.

Upgrade
At the end of each level, the player receives points which they can use to upgrade towers. As well as
upgrading, the player can unlock new towers as well as buffs.

Fig: Tower upgrade menu

As the key indicates, each upgrade is in 3 stats

Locked: This means that the player cannot put any points into this tower. This could be because perquisite
towers are missing, the player is not high enough level or the player has no points left to spend

Upgradeable/Unlockable: This state means that the player has points to upgrade with AND is high enough
level to upgrade this tower.

Already owned: The player has points to spend, is high enough level and already has at least one point in the
tower. Putting more points into a tower increases the stats of that tower, much like weapon proficiencies

Bio
The voiceless commander, “Player01”,is a veteran from the Arhid War.  Although his action record from the
war is brief, fighting in only 2 battles, the weight of his responsibilities as a new-tech commander is great.  He
is seen as a superior fighter and respected by those in authority and by politicians.   However, to other new-
tech commanders he is seen as a rookie and some believe that his involvement in the defence of Formika is
both folly and dangerous.

He is under the protection of “Veteran” while learning the ropes of being a “new-tech”.  Although not by
choice, she is made to show Player01 how to survive and better apply himself on the battlefield.
Although she is first wary of his untested behaviour, she quickly becomes impressed with his speed of learning.

Game Mechanics

18
Colin Malkin – GS7173615Z Formika

List of Mechanics:

 Core
 Camera
 Controls
 Proficiencies

Core
Win/Lose Condition
To win each level in Formika, the player must kill all Forma that attack them.
If the player is killed in battle, they will respawn with only a few seconds delay. The player loses the level when
the Forma over run the stage and are able to attack the key area of each map (,mine entrance, power station,
civilian buildings etc.) The key area for each map has a health meter. When this reaches zero the level must
be restarted
Piece Elimination/Loss avoidance
The player must try their best to keep the Forma from attacking their towers. The game will become harder
the fewer the well placed, essentially secure towers. While a player is able to be killed, there are no
backlashes from dying, i.e. you lose no points, credits, ammo etc. But ultimately if all towers fall, the Forma
are free to attack the key area of the stage

Camera
First Person
As the game is first person, the camera angle will be viewed from the player’s character’s eyes. This is the
main camera angle and the majority of the game will be played in it. The camera will allow for the player’s
weapon to be viewed as seen in countless other FPS’s.
Third Person
While in game, the player will place towers. When the tower has been selected for building from the build
menu, the camera will pan backwards and elevate over the players right shoulder. This gives the player a
better view of where they are placing their towers.

Veteran
With a prestigious military history, VETERAN is one of the greatest fighters on Formika.  She is well respected
by military leaders and comrades.  Those that do not respect her, fear her, as her sometimes aggressive bad
attitude has been known to end conversations with violence and threat of death.  She is a no nonsense, hard
talking fighter that takes a lot of flak for being a woman, but she is quick to put them in their place.  While at
first hating the idea of “babysitting” Player01, she quickly changes her tune when she sees him in action.
Eventually, she becomes friends with Player01 and aids him voluntarily.  She has been in the military from a
very young age and fought in 36 of the 47 skirmishes that took place during the war.  Although she is
enthusiastic about battle, her sometimes reckless decisions make her vulnerable to planned attacks

Maximus
Maximus is the military leader of the alliance force.  He was a top figure head in the formation of the alliance
after the war and is held is high respect.  He is a humble individual that makes sensible decisions and listens to
those around him.  Unlike his Entjak Counterpart, Jurrah, Maximus leads his forces with inspiration and
righteousness.  Although very few are still alive to say that they have seen Maximus on the battlefield, text that
document previous military skirmishes state that his skill is legendary.  He carries a massive, seemingly
decorative war hammer on his back.  As well as being a powerful weapon, this hammer is given to the leader
of the Bofkrak military.

Jurrah
Jurrah is the military leader of the Entjak nation.  He is a spiteful, ruthless man that rules with fear and
punishment at heart.  Despite his attitude, he is well loved by his military and is seen as a powerful leader.
Well skilled in battle, he has been known to get caught up in action and make rash decisions rather than
strategizing as a leader should.  He is the only son of the king of Entjak, Martel and quickly rose through the
ranks thanks to his father’s position.  He is a young man, and his lack of military experience is his downfall

Arkath
Arkath is the king of Bofkrak.  He was made king by the previous ruler, Tyrial.  Although not related by blood,
Tyrial made it clear to his council that Arkath was to be made ruler after his death rather then his own son,
Deckard.  Reluctantly, Arkath took up the position and is loved by all citizens of Bofkrak and Arhid.  Other than
Maximus, Arkath is the only other known soldier to have fought in every single battle of the Arhid war.  The
great friendship between Arkath and Maximus was forged on the battlefield, they were recruits together and
fought alongside in the same faction through the entire war.  Deckard, Tyrial’s son, was also a recruit with
Arkath and Maximus but after fleeing the battlefield, he was removed from service and bought shame to Tyrial
ever since.  Arkath’s father was killed while fighting alongside Tyrial leaving Arkath without a father from a very
young age, Tyrial promised his father he would look out for Arkath.

22
Colin Malkin – GS7173615Z Formika

Deckard
Son of Tyrial, and technically the blood king of Bofkrak, Deckard is a sly, wicked individual that only looks out
for himself.  After his dismissal from the military, he was shunned by his father, the king.  Because of his blood-
relation to the king, he sees himself as the rightful king and struts around Bofkrak with self-importance.  When
Arkath was crowned king, Deckard left Bofkrak in a rage, swearing revenge on Arkath.  He travelled to Orval-
Tor where he met Gildur.  Deckard employed Gildur as a bodyguard and paid him well with his father’s money.
With revenge still burning inside of him, Deckard paid Gildur to begin the crisis unfolding on Formika in an
attempt to either kill Arkath, or force him off the thrown.
Gildur
From a young age, Gildur showed promise as a caster in Orval-Tor.  He first knew of his own skill when he was
easily able to out-cast his teachers and priests.  He fled Orval-Tor as a young man, and travelled to the priest
college in Val-dak.  He again, quickly, outperformed some of the greatest casters in the college and sort to
develop his power even more.  It was when he began self-studying a darker form of casting that he was
removed from the school.  In anger of rejection, he torched the college and fled back to Orval-Tor where he
became a hired mercenary.  After the coronation of Arkath, Deckard came to Orval-Tor in search of Gildur.
While under the employment of Deckard, Gildur had a path in which to practice his dark spells

Martel
King of Entjak and father to Jurrah, King Martel leaves the ruling of Entjak to his son and senators.  The grossly
fat, king of Entjak spends his days drinking barrel after barrel of mead and cares little about his nation or the
attack of the Forma.  He is content with doing nothing on a daily basis and refuses interaction with the alliance.

Valer
Arguably the greatest caster on Formika.  As wise as she is powerful, the high priestess is respected by the
priesthood of Orval-Tor and members of the Formika alliance.  She spends much of her time reading in the
college’s library to unearth the secrets of the Forma’s appearance.  As the figurehead to the alliance, she gives
the opinion of Casters to the rest of the leaders.

Forma

Pawn
The smallest of all the known Forma, slight, and lightly armoured, Pawns
make up the majority of the Forma’s force.

Heavy
From smallest to the largest of the known types of Forma, these “Hulks”
are heavily armoured but slow moving

Leapers
Leapers use their long legs to bound toward the enemy.

Speeders
These speedy Forma that are lightly armoured.  Their speed can be
disrupted by dazing them with explosives or building a maze like defence
as their need distance to pick up momentum.

Shields
these gargantuan Forma with their massive armoured heads take very little
damage head on. They can open their front exoskeleton to spit corrosive
acid over foes

Rock Head
This slight, but towering Forma uses momentum from its height to pound at
walls and tower.

24
Colin Malkin – GS7173615Z Formika

Other Forma

Wasps
These winged Forma make up the majority of air-based Forma, lightly armoured and of average speed, these
Wasps dive when close to their target but must re ascend to attack more than once. These Forma however will
not fight in cave areas

Ceiling Crawlers
In cave areas of Formika, these Crawlers utilize their speedy climbing abilities and pounce at targets below.
Once they have made their first attack however they become permanently grounded

Queen
The central hive mind of the Forma, she is linked telepathically to each and every Forma and calls them to her
defence.  She is massive in size, aggressive and intelligent making her the ultimate Forma.(Appears as the final
Boss of the game)

Environment

Bofkrak
Government: Direct Dictatorship
Head of State: King
Current ruler: King Arkath

Bofkrak is the diplomatic centre of Formika and the home of the Planets alliance group.

The region of Bofkrak is separated in 2 as the North, home of the capital, Bofkrak and the south, home of the
2nd capital Arhid.

The region is a self-sufficient island, and covers the largest ground area on the planet.  The island mostly
contains lush green rolling hills and meadows for farming.  The mountainous backbone of the island offers
protection to its capital.  The majority of buildings in the region are made of wood, but larger buildings
including the castles are made of stone

Arhid
The 2nd capital or Bofkrak, Arhid is a the 2nd largest city in the region. Nestled into the peninsular, the city is
mostly built inside the mountains and faces outwards south-easterly towards Durega. The Arhid war left a
massive amount of the city destroyed by the forces of Entjak. The rebuilt city, is the transport capital of
Formika and channels most of its shipments through Durega to Glorega and Thorega

Waterdell
Situated North west of Marega, the town of Waterdell is a small civilian town at the edge of the Bofkrak Gulf.
The town is a fishing location and supplies the capital.

Havenworth
The open plan town of Havenworth is a flat farming town south east of the capital. Solely built for the farming
of livestock and crops for Bofkrak, the bustling town was the second to be attacked by the Forma.

Highpoint
After the Arhid war, Highpoint was built to the East of Arhid as a first contact lookout point. The eye opening
landmark, Highpoint tower, oversees southern waters between South Bofkrak, Arhid and Eastern Entjak’s
Glorega. Highpoint tower is the tallest structure on Formika

36
Colin Malkin – GS7173615Z Formika

Rockvale
This mining town located inside the peninsular, north west of Arhid. The entire town is built inside the
mountain for both ease of access and protection. The town provides both capitals with building rock.

Marega
Is the only solely military port on Formika. After the Arhid war, Bofkrak invested greatly in its sea defence
capabilities and now towers over Entjaks navy.

Durega
The largest, busiest port on Formika, Durega is the main shipping port for all regions. During the Arhid war,
the port was untouched, as it was valuable to Entjak for landing their forces.

Entjak
Government: Aristocratic Monarchy
Head of State: King
Current ruler: King Martel
Entjak is the capital of the Entjak region and the largest island on the planet.  The geography of the region
consists mostly of impassable mountains with very few flat areas for farming or residence.
The capital, is a giant forging town that houses a massive forging pit at its centre.  The building materials for
the region are made here, consisting mostly of metal.
The 2nd capital of this region is Malkrak.  A mere shadow in size to its sister city. Malkrak is the flattest area
of Entjak and the majority of natural resource gathering, including fishing is done here.
Another mentionable region of the region is Duervon, a massive creator that sits between the 2 cities.

Malkrak
The 2nd capital of Entjak, Malkrak is a world away from its sister cities look and manner. Malkrak is a blooming
bustling town that, in appearance, looks more like a city of Bofkrak then Entjak itself. Thanks to the flatter and
lusher soil of Malkrak, farming is possible and supplies the capital with all its crops. The road from Malkrak to
Entjak is long but is shortened by the Duervon Pass, a giant natural passage through the Entjak Mountains.
Norfort
Situated between Entjak and Duervon, the civilian town on the great northern road is another hard built up,
over populated town like Entjak. The metal built town was built as an overflow for civilians living in Entjak but
has become over inhabited itself in the last few years
Lynchwood
The city of Lynchwood is located between the capital and the southern port of Glorega on the edge of the
Lynchwood forest. The city was originally built as a guard house to protect the forest from over farming.
Lynchwood is the only forest on the eastern side of the Entjak mountains and is under the protection of the
king against the over farming of its trees.
Duervon
Duervon, or “Dark tunnel” is the location a giant crater between Entjak and Malkrak. Although only few
people in Entjak know the story behind the crater, no one in the capital pays attention to it and only see it as
an inconvenience between the 2 capitals.
Delrega
This harbour WAS a purpose built manufacturing and launching point for the old Entjak navy. The city harbour
is now mostly unoccupied except for fishing. The giant war plants and factories are still standing but are
unused since the war.
Glorega
Glorega is the 2nd largest port on Formika. It is the only shipping port for Entjak and so is a lifeline for
resources from Orval-Tor and Bofkrak. It was also the massing point for the Entjak navy at the start of the war.

Orval-Tor
Government: Religious Authority
Head of State: High Priest/Priestess
Current ruler: High Priestess Valer

This small island known to be inhabited off the south western shores of Entjak is home to the casters.  Believed
by the locals to be the spiritual center of Formika, the highly religious inhabitants of the island live in harmony
with nature.  Their architecture consists of wooden huts but the churches and libraries, the most important
buildings of Orval-Tor are made from stone and glass and are the most eye opening structures on the planet.
The island has only 2 towns on it, Orval-Tor and Val-Dak.  The southern city, Val-Dak is home to the greatest
library on the planet and is said to be the oldest structure known to casters.

Val-Dak
As stated, Val-Dak is the smaller, southern city on Orval-Tor. Although separate in location, the cities are built
and appear very similar in its people, architecture and customs. The largest building in the city is the Val-Dak
library. Filled to the brim with ancient text which date back to the preconception of Old-Bofkrak and the
events of the Duervon. The librarians are all priest casters and teach those who have the capacity to learn

Thorega
The only port on the island is Thorega. Before the explorations of King Leega, the port was only used for
fishing but has grown since the emigration of the nations. Is is still tiny in comparisons to Glorega and Durega
but fits its needs for capacity.

Story
Backstory
Pre Awakening
For centuries, the dwarves lived alone on Formika.  The earliest recorded documents show that the existence
of Dwarves on Formika dates back for over 8 centuries, although it is unknown when the city of Bofkrak was
first built or by whom.  The earliest documents found were discovered in a library in what came to be known
as The old City.  The old city is a vast connection of streets hundreds of feet below the surface, under the
paved roads now known Bofkrak City.  For a long time, it was believed that the Island that held Bofkrak was the
only one on Fomika.  With the exception of Arhid to the south and the few farming and mining towns, Formika
was thought of as a relatively small planet.  The king of Bofkrak ruled over his city as well as Arhid and it had
been that way since the rediscovery of the capital.

Up rise of Arhid

Arhid was not always under the rule of the Bofkrak King,  They had their own ruler until the Iphal dynast.
Public revolt grew as the current king over taxed and punished his citizens.  With a massive influx of Arhid
citizens travelling to Bofkrak for refuge against the evil dictator, it was decided that the king at the time, Leega,
would step up and protect the foreign citizens.  Naturally, King Iphal refused to step down or change his ruling
methods.  So the refugees banded together and with the aid of civilian help from Bofkrak, took back their city
in the biggest upset in royalties history.  The Bofkrak military and the King had nothing to do with the uprise,
but after many months of siege against their own city, took back their homes and removed the King from his
thrown.  After seeing the happyness of the citizens of Bofkrak under the rule of King Leega, it was decided that
the ruler of Bofkrak would also be the king of Arhid.

With economy flourishing and steady development throughout the Bofkrak region,  Leega decided to search
the seas for other life and other islands.  He famously sent 100 ships, each containing 100 dwarves, and
discovered 2 islands, now known as Entjak and Orval-Tor.

Discovery of Entjak

The harsh, mountainous region of Entjak was mostly a baron wasteland with small farming potential.  while
mapping out the island, it was discovered that there was civilized life to the east.  The city of Entjak opened
their gates to the scouts but were cautious.  The dwarves of Entjak had darker skin, and were naturally
slimmer.  The buildings were made mostly from metal with the exception of their grander buildings and keeps
which were of a stone build.  Although under no "king", the ruler, Fuur welcomed the newcomers at first.
International relations were developed and Fuur and Leega met finally.  Leega, had no intentions of spreading
his rule, but Fuur grew paranoid, as it was custom for rulers to be challenged for their position.  But the
undeniable mutual benefits of 2 different nations override the leaders paranoia and the 2 nations flourished.

Discovery of Orval-Tor
The much longer sea journey from Durega to Orval-Tor was hard on the sailors.  Close to running out of food
and water, the captain arrogantly pressed on.  after 80 days at sea, a shore finally came into view in the
distance.  They were met at the shore by figures in long robes and gave the travellers food and water.  After
meeting with their ruler, High priest Maran, a relationship was set up between the 2 nations.  Maran told the
travellers that the citizens of Orval-Tor have no need for outside influence and they live happily alone and few
have ever met anyone not from the Island.  It wasn’t until the sailors travelled to the city that they discovered
what made these dwarves special.  They were able to harness power through prayer and preform magic.
Maren said that this had been the way the people get things done for all known time..  They were given Food
for their return journey and informed king Leega of the development.  The King respected their decision but
travelled to meet Maren on a few occasions.  He convinced the high priest and opened a trade link between

39
Colin Malkin – GS7173615Z Formika

the 2 islands.  Citizens from both nations set up home and business in each other’s cities but firm rules were
set on the island of Orval-Tor as there was worry of disruption for their powers.
The War of Arhid
After seeing the rule of one person in the case of Bofkrak, Entjak decided that this would work with their city.
The son of Fuur, Lars was the first person in Entjak's history to be named king.  He lead the region in the
growth of economy and grew Entjak out of the twisted metal slum into a civilized, flourishing society.  But
power got to Lars' head, he wanted more than just Entjak, and so sent an assault to Durega and on to Arhid.
The attacking force was large, 500 ships filled with thousands of fighters.  Durega was quick to fall at the hands
of Lars.  Bofkrak responded with a full response and the unfortunate battlefield was the city of Arhid.  Casters
that were living in Bofkrak helped the allied military forces.

The invasion ultimately failed and lead to a world-wide recession that forced all nations to forge an alliance.
Even the caster priests of Orval-Tor joined despite their disregard for the other nations.

King Tyrial

King Tyrial, The leader at the time of the Arhid fought on the battlefield at Arhid.  He returned home and lead
Bofkrak through the hard times of the recession.  His Son, Deckard was denied the thrown by orders of Tyrial
himself.  He came to this conclusion after  Deckard fled the battlefield as a coward.  He was removed from the
battlefield and forever seen as a failure in his father’s eyes.  The crown was to move to Arkath, a childhood
friend on Tyrial.  Arkath fought valiantly besides Tyrial in many battles during the war.

Awakening

The Forma awoke seemingly randomly.  The attack originated from Duervon, a massive crater in the East of
Entjak.  Messengers from small farming villages arrived at the Palace’s in Malkrak and Entjak explaining the
situation.  Defences where raised and the Alliance met in Bofkrak, the meeting location of the Alliance.  It was
discussed that since the majority of soldiers were killed in the war of Arhid, Selected commanders were
granted weapon technology never before seen in the world.  The commanders were sent to the main cities
and towns to defend against the attacking Forma

Story Arc

The player is sent to defend multiple location in Bofkrak from the approaching Forma.
Waterdell
On arrival at Waterdell, Veteran takes control and moves all civilians to the keep. The garrisoned soldiers of
the town charge out to meet the Forma but only slow them down. After the attack the last of the Forma are
killed and the citizens reassured. The couple are then extracted back to Bofkrak for a debrief with Maximus

After the debrief multiple reports are flooded in of Forma assault in the region. Veteran is sent to Arhid to act
as a military ambassador of Bofkrak. Maximus is now keeping an eye on the player via com-link.
The player is then sent to aid the towns of Havenworth Retreat, Highpoint and Rockvale.

After Rockvale is saved, word from Entjak is received. The commanders of Entjak are struggling with holding
back the Forma and are requesting aid from Bofkrak, much to the disgust of the preceptor Jurrah.
After showing his worth, the player is sent to Entjak to help Jurrah and the King to defend their towns.
Jurrah meets with the player at the palace steps but before the player can meet with this King, the pair are
sent to Norfort. The civilian city is being ravaged.

Norfort
Jurrah and the player are dropped in Norfort in the heat of battle. Jurrah runs to organise the extraction of
civilians while the player is told to defend the city entrance. Once the final civilians are extracted, Jurrah and
the player are airlifted from the city. The town is lost to the overwhelming force of the Forma’s assault.
While travelling back to Entjak, new orders arrive. Lynchwood is being attacked.
Lynchwood
This farming town is the secret developmental center for Entjaks military. The nearly empty town needs
defending to save the technology inside the main buildings. Jurrah allows the use of Entjak’s experimental
new tower while in Lynchwood. Once the technology is secured, the player and Jurrah fly to Bofkrak to the
alliance. The preceptor of Orval-Tor has a theory to the reasons for the Forma’s appearance. As Jurrah,
Maximus and the player listen to Valer’s theory emergency launches are required in Malkrak and Arhid, the 2
co-capitals of Entjak and Bofkrak. Maximus and Jurrah await the players decision to which city they are going
to save

Save Arhid
Maximus and the Player are air dropped to Arhid with time to spare. The pair set up a massive defence and
wait behind the keep gates for the assault of the Forma. Experimental Tower from Maximus and use it against
the Forma when they breach the gates. When the Forma’s assault is halted a final air attack is supported from
Bofkrak annihilating the fleeing Forma.
A message is relayed to the couple from King Arkath explaining that Malkrak has fallen, and Jurrah has been
killed.

Save Malkrak
Jurrah and the Player are air dropped to Malkrak. Before landing, the player and Jurrah take control of the
heavy machine guns on board the chopper to lessen the Forma Numbers. The pair set up a massive defence
and wait behind the keep gates for the assault of the Forma. When is seems the last of Forma are fleeing, the
pair land but are quickly forced back to the caves underneath Malkrak by massive over spill of Forma. The
team hold off the attack as Entjak send a large squadron of air attacking vehicles and annihilate the attackers.
A message is relayed to the couple from King Arkath explaining that Arhid has fallen, and Maximus has been
killed.

Assault on Orval-Tor
While investigating possible causes to the uprise of the Forma, Orval-Tor library is torn by the Earth, spewing
out Forma.  The player is air dropped to Val-Dak and fights off the Forma while the casters block off the
entrance to the Forma tunnel. Valer discovers that the caster responsible is Gildur and that he is on his way to
attack Bofkrak and kill the king.
Grand Defence – Bofkrak
The player is Teleported by Valer to Bofkrak as Gildur sends the last of the Forma against the walls of the great
city. During the assault, the Queen Forma bursts from the ground and chases the player through the Bofkrak
caves.

As the queen Forma is slain, the Forma retreat from the city and Gildur is nowhere to be found, for now.

Maximus: “Veteran, I’m putting you in charge of analysing the new guys skills and teaching him the basics. He

Veteran: “Humph, fine. But don’t expect him to survive long against those monsters ”
Maximus: “Do as I say Veteran or you’ll find yourself in trouble again”
Veteran: “Yes, Sir!”

Veteran: “Right. Newcomer, do as I tell you and you might last another few minutes against the Forma.
first we’ll test your movement skills. Run the obstacle course in front of you and come back to me. I’ll be
timing you.”

System Message: “Use W,A,S and D to move and the mouse to look around”
System Message: “Ctrl is crouch and Space is jump”

Veteran: “fine, so you can run and jump. But you’ll have to be a damn sight faster than that to stay alive out
there. Make your way to the firing gallery before I shoot you myself”

System Message: “Move to the Firing range.”

Veteran: “Pick the gun up from the ammo crate and fire off a few rounds at the targets”

System Message: “Move to the pistol to pick it up.”

System Message: “Fire off a few shots down range.”

Veteran: “Alright, Alright that enough. Now were gonna test your reactions. Targets will appear randomly in
front of you, shoot them before they disappear, aim down the sights for a more accurate hit”

System Message: “Hold right click to aim down the sights and hit the targets as they appear”

Veteran: “Good, now get you a bigger gun from the crate and test that one out. Don’t lose control with the
recoil. Fire off a couple of shots”

System Message: “Fire the SMG down range”

Veteran: “This time each target will need 2 shots to take it down. Use the Aim and recoil to double tap the
targets”

System Message: “Shoot each target twice to make them fall”

Veteran: “not bad for a rookie. You’ll pick up more weapons another time but the principles are there. But
your dead without learning how to place towers. Move to the tower arena next door and ill show your sorry
arse what’s what.”

System Message: “Move to the Tower arena and wait for Veteran”

Veteran: “Right, so towers. This is where it gets interesting. You can place towers to do most of the work for
you. Of course you’ll still have to look after your towers by shooting the Forma off them when they get too
close. You start losing towers they’ll come for you next. So what are you waiting for. Build me a Turret and
point it down the range.”

System Message: “Push Q to toggle the tower menu”

System Message: “Click the build Icon”
System Message: “Select the Turret”

43
Colin Malkin – GS7173615Z Formika

System Message: “The green cone indicates the area the turret can shoot.”
System Message: “push and hold left Click to place the turret”

Veteran: “I’m going to Free a target so you can see what happens”

Veteran: “Sometimes you’ll need to see the whole battlefield to see what’s happening. That’s what your tact
view is for”

System Message: “Hold TAB to enter Tact view”

Veteran: “When you kill Forma you’ll collect credits to spend on upgrading, repairing and building more
towers. Different towers are useful for different situation. I’ve given you some so you can upgrade that one”

System Message: “Push Q to toggle the tower menu”

System Message: “Click the Upgrade Icon”
System Message: “The Turret turns gold when your able to upgrade”
System Message: “Click and hold left click to upgrade.”

Veteran: “That’s better, looks useful now. Get ready, I’m going to send some targets at you. Kill them before
they get to your towers.”

Veteran: “Sweet. Now build another turret and upgrade it.”

Veteran: “Nice job. Let’s go tell Maximus that you’re not so much of a liability as we thought”

Maximus: “Veteran! You and the rookie need to get to Waterdell immediately. The Forma are on their way.”

Veteran: “Get ready rookie, were throwing you in the deep end!”

Waterdell

Veteran: “Alright newbie, try not to die on me. Do as I say and you might get to see Bofkrak again”

Maximus: “This is serious Veteran, We need more new-techs so don’t get this one killed this time”

Veteran: “Right, we’ve got some time before they arrive. Better get some towers up. Point them the right
way, okay!”

System Message: “Build 2 turrets at the main gates”

Veteran: “Good, now get up on the battlements and prepare for some bug splatting. Stay close so I can keep
an eye on you”

System Message: “Help Veteran fight off the Forma”

BATTLE

Veteran: “Damnit, they’ve broken through the side wall. Patch it up with a plasma wall! I’ve got to stay her

Veteran: “Good job, now get back up here and help me”

Veteran: “Sweet, that looks like all of them. Well done for not dying on me, Maximus would’ve killed if I lost
another one. Let’s get back and see what we’re doing next.”

System Message: “When you complete missions you receive points”

System Message: “Use them to unlock towers and improve them”
System Message: “You also unlock weapons and items after missions”
System Message: “You unlocked the shotgun, you can take this to the
next battle at the loadout screen”

Havenworth Retreat

Maximus: “Well done for your work at Waterdell you two. But that was simple so don’t get soft. We’ve got
multiple sightings of Forma in the region. You need to get them all. Veteran, I’m sending you down to Arhid as
a military advisor. I’ll be in touch so don’t do anything stupid. Got it”

Veteran: “Leave it to me Maximus”

Maximus: “This means you’re on your own rookie. Veteran assures me that you’re ready to go solo but I’ll be
in touch via com-link. There are 3 towns that need cleansing.”

System Message: “Select which town to travel to next”

Maximus: “Alright Newbie. Havenworth is an open plan town so you’ll have to defend from multiple angles.
I’ll be sending you extra credits for this mission to set you up with. And don’t forget to use your tact view to
see what needs defending”

System Message: “You unlocked the Rifle. Equip it at weapon loadout menu”

Maximus: “Well done on the last mission. Highpoint is a dangerous mission. The Forma are winged and are
attacking the tower. Use your AA towers to take them out of the sky. But don’t forget about the ground
Forma.”

System Message: “Build AA towers to attack the Airborne Forma”

BATTLE

Maximus: “The tower looks intact, well done. Here’s another weapon for you to play with”

System Message: “You unlocked the Rocket Launcher. Equip it at weapon loadout menu”

Rockvale

Maximus: “The Forma are trying to get into the mines at Rockvale, stop them before we can’t get them out.
Don’t let it fall. The Forma are getting bigger, they’re taking more of a beating than normal. Take that rocket
launcher I gave you. And this”

System Message: “You received the grenade throwing item. Equip it at the loadout menu”

BATTLE

Maximus: “Keep building those towers. The heavier the better”

Maximus: “The mine is ours. That’s good. Get back to Bofkrak… Wait! I’m getting a message from Entjak.
They’re having problems with the Forma. It must be bad if Jurrah has asked for help. He’s as stubborn as they
come. Get over there and see what you can do”

System Message: “You unlocked the Bullet Battery Aura.”

System Message: “Auras are passive upgrades.”
System Message: “Equip it at loadout menu.”

Jurrah: “You the new-tech from Bofkrak? Good, were leaving for Norfort. Now!”

Norfort

Jurrah: “You the new-tech from Bofkrak? Good, were leaving for Norfort. Now!”

System Message: “You unlocked the Proximity Mine Item.”

Jurrah: “As soon as we land, get rid of the Forma that are in the Town. Well only have a few minutes before
the rest come running The Forma are terrorizing the civilians down there so make sure they’re safe first. I’ll
get to the front gates and stop any more coming in. The air crew will be here soon to extract the civvies back
to Entjak. All we have to do it hold out until they’re all clear then jump on the last ship. This town will fall with
that amount of Forma coming at it. The best we can do it get the people to safety.”

Jurrah: “Maximus probably told you that Entjaks don’t normally ask for help from outsiders. He’s right. We
are a very proud nation and it is seen as weak to ask for help. But our situation is much worse than that of
Bofkrak. 5 towns have already fallen to the Forma. The south is totally overrun”

Jurrah: “Well done in Norfort, New-Tech. But were not out of the shit-storm yet. We’re going to Lynchwood.
There’s a tower development base underground there and a prototype tower being worked on just might save
Entjak from falling. We need to go get it. When we land, the defence is all in your hands”

Lynchwood

Jurrah: “Alright. Set up defences, take my credits while I go and get the Tower prototype. I’ll be as quick as I
can”

BATTLE

System Message: “Hold out until Jurrah gets back”

Jurrah: “Alright. I got it. I’ll be up in a sec.”

Jurrah: “Here, take the tower and build it at the back of the defence. Our lift out of here won’t be able to land
with this many Forma coming in”

Jurrah: “Haha, beautiful isn’t it. And that’s just a prototype. Entjak Pick up this is Jurrah, Lynchwood should
be safe to come get us now. Let’s go New-tech. The alliance is waiting for us at Bofkrak.”

Arkath: “Thank you all for coming so quickly. Valer, the High priestess of Orval-Tor has something that may be
of use to use”

Valer: “Thank you Arkath. I have been studying accounts back to the reign of King Leega and have found
something that may explain the Forma’s sudden reappearance”

Jurrah: “Re-appearance? They’ve attacked before? When? Why were we not told?”

Arkath: “Jurrah!”

Valer: “The caster priest of Orval-Tor have known of the Forma’s existence for centuries, Jurrah of Entjak. But
it is not in the nature of the casters to free out information to those that do not ask for it.”

Jurrah: “Don’t ask for it. Surely you must have though it important to tell us that we share a world with these
monsters!”

Valer: “The Forma have been sleeping for some 600 years Jurrah. We should know, because we put them
there. Trapped them in the centre of Formika”

Jurrah: “Why didn’t you just kill them?!”

Valer: “Why? They bought no real harm to us. In fact, the caster spell bided them to save them”

Jurrah: “You speak in Riddles casters. Say what you mean”

Valer: “Very well. The Forma have been a part of Formika since before the Dwarfes. When we, the casters
came to Formika we shared their world with them peacefully. But the Forma were a young race themselves,
and the Queen over populated the planet. In their cramped living, they became aggressive and so the god
instructed us to incarcerate them and save them from wiping out their own being. This was some 600 years
ago as I said.”

Maximus: “So why have they returned.”

Valer: “It was the Casters that put them into the planet. Only a caster would know how to get them out. And
it would have to be an extremely powerful one at that.”

Veteran: “A rogue priest?”

Valer: “Precisely”

Arkath: “What more can you tell us priestess Valer?”

Valer: “Priests that train in Orval-Tor have access to Val-Dak library. It houses books and tombs about
everything that has happened in this world”

Veteran: “Including the incarceration”

Valer: “Yes. Casters that commit themselves to the studies of our gods commit for life. But only a few years
ago a caster by the name of Gildur came to study at the library. An extremely gifted caster with a thirst to
learn the very secrets of the planet. But the high priest at the time saw through Gildur and sensed that he
learning too quickly. And when the high priest refused to help Gildur, threats were made towards the priests
of the library. And Gildur was never seen again”

48
Colin Malkin – GS7173615Z Formika

Maximus: “So you think Gildur is responsible somehow?”

Valer: “It is a keen probability”

Veteran: “Do we know where he is”

Valer: “Since he left the college, he lived in Orval-Tor, and worked as a mercenary. He is wanted by the
priesthood for crimes against our gods. If he is found, we will have jurisdiction”

Jurrah: “You’ll have to get in line. There has been much bloodshed at his hand.”

Maximus: “But why would he attack Bofkrak and Entjak? Surely his fight lies with the priests?”

Veteran: “He’s a mercenary, he’ll take any work he can.”

Arkath: “Then who hired him?”

Messenger: “Pardon me my lord but urgent distress messages have been sent from Malkrak and Arhid”

Jurrah: “What’s happened?”

Maximus: “What is it?”

Messenger: “They are both under attack. The forces are massive. And a note For the king arrived”

Arkath: “Give it to me… I know who hired Gildur”

Maximus: “Who?”

*Arkath passes Maximus the note*

Maximus: “Deckard..!”

Jurrah: “How do we stop The Forma?”

Valer: “You must cut the link between Gildur and the Queen”

Arkath: “Maximus, Jurrah, You must go to your Cities. They need you”

Maximus: “Rookie, your with me”

Jurrah: “He must come and help Malkrak with me”

Maximus: “This is a full scale attack Jurrah, We need him”

them”

Jurrah/Maximus: “Were in Bofkrak! How is that possible?”

Valer: “For use in emergencies only… Val-Dak has fallen. Bofkrak will be next. We must prepare”

Defence Builder mini game

If the player chooses to save Arhid, the player gets to enter this mini game. The mini game also appears later
in the Grand Defence stage as well as being playable from the main menu.

Core Mechanics
The player must last as long as they can using only the towers provided. When the key location, i.e gates,
doors etc are attacked for 1000 damage, the mini game is over.

The forma make their way to the gates. The player is given towers on a timed basis to place where they see fit.
The player cannot shoot the Forma with weapons, only towers. The challenege comes in this minigame in the
form of resource management and target prioritizing. Once the Forma are through the gates, the game is
over. Depending on how long the player survives, determines their reward at the end. The camera changes to
that seen in the tact view for the entire minigame

Intro

The intro to Formika consists of a voice actor explaining a brief story telling of the games Current state (before
Forma Attack). While the story is being told, fading images explaining the backstory are being shown. The
images are as follows

 An orbiting planet from space (Formika)

 Images of the 3 Cities;
o Bofkrak
o Entjak and
o Orval-Tor
 The 500 ships of Fuur on the horizon over Durega
 The Battle of Arhid
 The Alliance Chamber
 The treaty document with 3 signatures declaring peace
 The crowning of Arkath (Deckard in the background)
 The small military of Bofkrak but the technology used
 Duervon
 South Entjak being annihilated by the Forma
 Mobilization of new-techs to Entjak
 The player

Outro

King Arkath speaks while short matinee clips and fading images fill the screen with the fleeing Forma. Arkath
explains that the Casters preyed to their gods and their will was done unto him. That be was to be burned by
their god of fire for the rest of eternity, never to die, but to feel only pain until the universe ceases to be. A
bounty was put out for Deckard. But his should he try to show his head again, the families of all those killed
will be in a queue after the kings, the new-techs and the casters have tasted revenge for his actions.
The casters encased the remaining Forma once again, must to the unease of Arkath, but eventually agreed that
it was not their fault for their actions. The final still shows the player being made preceptor of the 3 nations
and the quote “Formika is safe again, for now”

Visuals
The following is a visual art style description of Formika, Its cities, its people, the Forma and its comparisons

Styles

Formika
The planet Formika is consists of approximately 2/3 water and 1/3 Land. There are no polar caps and all above
sea land is habitat able by life. The planet comprises of 3 main islands, namely Bofkrak, Entjak and Orval-Tor.
Bofkrak is a almost totally a meadow, plain filled land but it separated from north to south in its centre by one
giant mountain range. The Mountain breaks off towards the south into smaller ranges but are all part of the
same mountain. The coasts are a rocky-sandy mix. There are 2 Gulfs, one, East of the capital between the city
and the military port Marega. The gulf joins onto the Bofic Strait the other is East of Arhid and leads to the
Orval Strait.
Entjak has patches similar to Bofkrak to its south. The Duervon Mountain range dominates the northern half
of the island and is home to its capital. The south, although now mostly ravaged by the Forma, is a largely
open and lush area. East of the Duervon Mountains is the city of Malkrak. This city nestles into the end of the
mountain range and it surrounded for the north, east and south by open fields. South of the capital is
Lynchwood is a town on the edge of a forest filled with thick pine trees that grow up to the tree line of the
Duervon Mountains.
Orval-Tor is the smallest island known to be inhabited. The Island itself is also devised into 2 halfs, north and
south with the capital to the north. The coasts of the island are mostly beaches with the Nore River dividing it
from the Nore Sea. As a percentage, the island is the largest population to its size as the entire island is
habitable due to its flatness

Bofkrak
The city is build in the bosom of the Fal mountains. It houses the highest populated city in Formika and it by
far the largest (2nd to Entjak). It also brags the largest castle which sits closest to the Fal Mountain and the rest
of the city facing out to the South East. The architecture is mostly made from wooden beamed houses with
wattle and daub protection as seen in medieval England in the 10 th-12th century. The roofs are slate or oak
cladding, rather than thatched. Most houses are 3 floors high with cascading, leaning design. The streets are
cobbled and the castle is made of stone, sporting a strong defensive design with outer walls, inner walls, keep
and towers.
Entjak
The unfortunate location of Entjak means that wood and other natural resources are hard to come by.
However, Entjak has access to a piece of machinery that other cities don’t, a giant forge. The people of Entjak
use this forge to refine rocks from the mountains they live on to build their homes, machinery and most of
other needs. The homes and normal buildings of Entjak are made from this refined metal but lack of planning
or care means that the homes are badly designed and constructed. Metal shards attached to building give the
impression of a junkyard from outside the city. Lack of care for the buildings and the mountain air makes rust
form quickly. Broken metal is simply re-patched with more metal creating a vicious cycle.
The city itself lays in a man-made valley giving the people unparalleled protection.
Orval-Tor
The city crafts its homes from white-wooden trees, white rock and for grander, more important buildings, glass
is used. The layout of its buildings is very precise and exact with one house looking very similar to the next.
The streets are paved in a geometric pattern made from carefully cut stones. The temples are the largest
buildings in the cities. The library at Val-Dak is the largest structure on the island and doubles up as a temple.
The areas around the cities are meadows bordered by sandy coasts. The river that nearly cuts the island in half
is the river Nore. It provides both cities with water and energy in the form of water wheels. The city mines
crystals that glow. The crystals are used for many things including powering their machinery

Game-related art

The art style for Formika in a game design sense would be described as a demi-realistic world that utilizes
exaggerated realistic elements to emphasise the non-pragmatic aspects of the game. Similar in concept to The
game is similar in art to that seen in Diablo or World of Warcraft, using contrast scales to set mood and
atmosphere.

Limitations

The Graphical intensity for Formika is low enough that it will run on any PC that can support other UDK tower
defence game including Dungeon Defenders and Sanctum. The challenge for hardware comes from the CPU of
the user’s PC, the number of enemies on screen at once can push the stacking capabilities for lesser CPU
worthy machines, i.e, those supporting laptop processors and or M processors or their equivalents.

Audio
Music

The type of music that is played in the game depends on the players actions. Each level has a different song
that builds in tempo and weight the further into each level the player gets. The main genre of music will
consist of alternative music, namely rock and metal. This is music is played purely while the player is in a level
and. Menu music will be different. When the player pauses the game, the volume drops temporarily. All
volumes can be adjusted in game and from the main menu

A medium between the menu music and the game music will be played during cut scenes unless otherwise
stated.

Menu Ambient

The menu music consists of a looping melodic tune that is peaceful and slow and barely audible. This takes the
audio distraction away from the player while selecting game types and options in the main menu. The menu
ambient only applies to the main menu music. As stated previously, the in game menu will be a lowered
volume version of the in game music

SFX

Rational sound effects will be played throughout the game, both in the menus and the game play itself.

Menu SFX
A sound bite will be played in the main menu and in the pause menu to further reinforce the players mouse
selection. When the player progresses or regresses in the menus, a different sound will play to confirm the
selection to the player.

Game SFX
“Real world” SFX will be played in game to further immerse the player into the game world.
Weapon equip – When equipping a weapon, the sound of clicking magazines will play. Clicking of magazine
release levers will also play upload load and reload.
Tower Placement – The sound of towers deploying themselves once placed by the player. This will consist of
pneumatic levers and cylinders pushing and pulling components to erect the structure
Shooting (Tower and weapon) bullet fire, hit from both sources will be included. The exact sound will vary
depending on the weapon being used.
Footsteps – For the player, NPCs and the forma
Forma sounds – Spawn, attack, damage and death SFX will immerse the player and show of Forma action
Objective/message prompts – When messages appear on screen, the player will be audibly prompted with a
SFX similar to that of the menu progression sound.
